Went to my 3rd grader’s assembly this morning before work and learned that Oregon has the most standing timber and highest lumber production in the nation (not surprisingly). The Civilian Conservation Corps planted over two billion trees, fought forest fires, built trails, campgrounds, and reservoirs, and aided with soil conservation programs. It became one of the New Deal's most popular and successful programs. When the CCC was rolled out in 1933, Oregon received 15,400 workers and when the program was disbanded in 1942 the state had an estimated 60,000 - 80,000 men staffed. Snagged this one a couple of weeks ago and after trying it on didn’t really have a choice but to take it home…if you’ve ever handled well-worn French moleskine bleu de travail you know what I mean. The substantive weight, buttery soft handfeel, and beautiful indigo fades are truly something to behold. Not to ruffle any feathers but if there were ever a workwear rival of our beloved raw American denim this would have to be it. Sold to us yesterday by a woman whose mother was a late University of Oregon grad. We were told she would wear her “beanie” with her threadbare ducks t-shirt every game day in support of her alma mater. The fades don’t lie. As many of you probably know, we recently cut back on the number of days we’re open to the public which was a much needed adjustment that has breathed new life into the shop for a number of reasons. One of them being, we can get out there and source more frequently which translates into a better selection of quality vintage on the racks and allows us to keep things fresh by moving older stock to the 50% off rack and $5 bins on a weekly basis.
