25 Years ago this very night, two intrepid sonic explorers deviated from the after party scene to create a world of their own. The following 4 years, into the next Millennium, were an explosion of ideas and creativity.
Using anything they could get their hands on to make music, including tape loops, toy instruments, drum machines, synths, pianos, stylophones, tronichords, samplers, even pots and pans, to create a unique analog world recorded on a reel to reel 4 track, that is equally as full of charm, love and wonder as it is existential dread and doom. Friends and musicians were brought into their orbit whenever possible to add their own spice rack of sounds.
This is the world of FRiED-X. They only released one album at the time on Julian Cope’s label. Now, for the first time ever, the complete sessions will soon be available. These were the very first Shoot The Moon recordings.
Spanning genres such as Psychedelic Wonky Pop, Kosmische, Psyche Folk, Trance Rock, to a reimagining of Techno, everything including the pots and pans and the kitchen sink were thrown into the mix to create a truly unique world of sound. Think Cosmic Jokers trying to be the Chemical Brothers, early Kraftwerk turning into The Associates, Amon Düül playing Daft Punk, Faust playing The Flaming Lips in the style of the Flamin’ Groovies via Roxy Music, Black Sabbath doing Scott Walker, Iggy Pop singing Teardrop Explodes songs in the style of Patti Smith backed by Neu, now imagine all these artists around a campfire and you might be somewhere close.
