Hi! I am applying to Brown in a program (questbridge) which makes me basically early decision. I know this is a general question but is the energy there happy? What is the area around the campus like? I'm from San Diego.
Hello, there!
Glad to hear you’re applying!
I think the campus atmosphere will be a different experience for everyone based on where you’re coming from, both geographically and mentally. But I would say that when I was a young and sprightly first-year, the energy was beyond happy to me. Seeing people lying out on the greens, walking down Waterman Street fashionably dressed and having excited conversations about whatever class they had just come from--it was exactly the kind of place I wanted to be. I’d say people are passionate here, and that often translates to a generally happy energy. But no place can magically make everyone happy all of the time, and it is rough here sometimes emotionally. There are genuinely caring advisors and deans here, though, and resources like Counseling and Psychological Services for those of us who could make use of them.
As for the area around campus, it’s a small but bustling city. There’s a downtown area with a mall, skating rink, and parks within walking distance. Public transportation can take you out to most places you’d want to go around Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Food trucks, restaurants, clothing shops abound here, and there are lots of music and arts events to check out and opportunities to volunteer in the arts and community development. Not sure how it compares to anywhere in San Diego, but it’s a nice place.
If you have other questions, feel free to message (and indicate if you want to keep the conversation private). Good luck!
xoxo,
SBSS
