Something I find particularly impressive about how insistently Star Wars (I’m talking about actual real Star Wars: episode 1-6) is misinterpreted is that George Lucas explained all of this to the world in plain speech. 😅 He didn’t write the movies with intention to obfuscate. He never intended to be hard to grasp. He basically wrote a beginner’s manual and then after the fact held everyone’s hand and walked you through it. And many still reject basic concepts in Star Wars because they have not the ears to hear which have not the mind to understand. They just don’t wanna. I do understand not wanting to. I sympathize. There are certain stories that an individual just won’t agree with. But I’d like those individuals to say “hey. Star Wars doesn’t agree with me! I don’t agree with it.” But first they have to actually see it for what it is. 😂
People can handle evil characters(for the most part--usually they twist their behavior and water it down) but people really can't handle good characters that lose their head or lose themselves and have a moment of fallen grace. Fandom has shown this time and time again. They really look at them as worse than the initial evil.
related but tangential. there's a really strong unexamined belief throughout a lot of fandom -- and population outside of fandom, but we're talking about fandom here -- that what you do and say during your worst moments is who you really are.
And the assumptions underlying this, more or less, break down to:
Everybody is secretly bad deep down. They're born that way (no, this is not original sin, wdym, it's just an Honest and Realistic assessment of human nature!) and have to be taught to cover it up through childhood with facades of politeness. Everybody is lying all the time by pretending to be better or nicer than they really are, and this facade takes active effort to maintain. When the effort drops and the facade slips, the true underlying rottenness shows through.
All actions taken are rational and reasoned, at all times. Lying is always a deliberate, purposeful action meant to advance a person's aims and goals. There is never any reason to lie except to make yourself look good. Therefore, any good or nice statement or action may be a lie, but any bad or harmful statement or action must be true.
Ergo: anything a person (or a character) says or does when in states of emotional extremity, overwhelming grief, incapacitating pain, exhaustion, illness, head injury, is Peeling Back the Facade of Goodness to reveal the True Rottenness Underneath. So not only are you actually as evil as the evil character, you're also a liar.
This is, of course, utter nonsense. But an amazing number of people seem to believe it.
can we please stop attributing anakin's good traits to obi-wan fucking kenobi when shmi skywalker is right there

“i love how we as a fandom have just agreed that–” don’t include me in this. do NOT lump me in with that.

in 2026, remember how GOOD writing feels. remember how satsfying it is to get your characters to the point you have been dying to get to, where they will experience the love, fear, relief or whatever the feeling you want to bring to life may be. let this year be the year of writing, prgress and of satisfactory endings.
I went to a county public library the other day and they had a closet sized room that said bookstore annex where you could peruse shelves of books to buy for $1. It was like a thrift store in that there was no salesmanship to the display, just a bunch of books ordered by author and genre but other than that pretty chaotic and I didn’t recognize the books. It was just judging by title and cover. And I ended up buying 2 books about Nebraska. One written in the 90’s and one in the 1920’s. I’m reading the 90’s book called Goodnight, Nebraska by Tom McNeal and it’s very good. I’m so amazed that I just found a good book on a random shelf and now I’m enjoying it after not being able to find an affordable book to read for a few weeks. What luck. I feel like McNeal’s writing is so easy and so clean and so enjoyable. It’s rich without being gratuitous or wet. Good word economy. And the macro level is where the quality of the book resides rather than the micro line level. Anyway. I know that there are always invisible ley lines influencing our paths or the paths of books to us, things like popularity or location etc, but it felt nice to find a book in what felt like the most organic and random way possible. And to enjoy it? And for $1? Lucky lucky.

Man, Merlin the character gets more interesting on rewatches and with age. If you want to watch a morally good loyal protagonist who lies constantly this is the guy.
I’m slowly forgetting your face
doing some redraws of merlin screencaps to trick myself into actually doing studies for once

Broke: Merlin is a royalist because he is a class traitor boot licker
Woke: Merlin is a royalist because he was raised a peasant in the sixth century and he has the perspective and values typical of that time period on top of his personal experiences with Arthur to give him faith in the enlightened despotism favored by Catherine the Great and Frederick of Prussia.
Bespoke: Merlin is a royalist because anyone who had to live through both the English Civil War and Voltaire's exile to Britain would come out the other side thinking democracy is stupid.
Transcendent: Merlin is not a royalist. He is the divine right of kings in human form. The avatar of Albion and its magic. He does not believe in kings because of Arthur. He believes in Arthur so Arthur gets to be king.
