5yl had finally reached it's end. It's still wild to me that that's the case! So, as I have with the last few releases, I'm going to break the chapter down and highlight what I found interesting! As always, spoilers ahead! So, if you haven't watched the episode, please watch it here! Or if you're a Ben 10 or Danny Phantom fan who hasn't yet seen 5yl, you can check it out in full here!
Now, this scene was a surprise! Divinity disabling the Omnitrix's failsafes! I wasn't expecting this, but with Divinity's powers anything is possible, I guess!
I know that many people in the 5yl fandom don't want to give Divinity any credit. They think he's chopped compared to Alien X. But Divinity has something Ben as Alien X doesn't: he's intelligent and has a thought out plan. Ben, on the other hand, isn't the brightest and usually goes with the flow without anything planned out. Divinity did win in all those other timelines after all, and for a good reason!
In this scene, we can see cameos of several of the most powerful beings from other media! I don't know all of them, but I can recognize most! Comment below who the characters I couldn't name are! On the left we've got: a generic Earth god?(probably some kind of Greek god?), Uncle Grandpa(funny, but appropriate!), White Diamond from Steven Universe, the Pale King from Hollow Knight, Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls, and the Ink Tank's own Crystalmoon101(I guess, she's just that powerful!). On the right we have: Caine from Digital Circus, a Chronosapien?(could be a character I'm unfamiliar with, but could also be a tease for one of the Ink Tank's future projects!), Grob Gob Glob Grod from Adventure Time, Galactus from Marvel Comics, a character I'm not familiar with, Alien X, and Professor Paradox, both from Ben 10(although the last one could also be one of the doctors from Doctor Who, they're basically the same thing as Paradox anyway, lol!).
Y'know I was low-key expecting Clone Vlad to succeed in killing Ben. I mean, it was literally foreshadowed for several chapters, but I don't think most were expecting it to actually happen, which is what makes this scene still effectively shocking, I think!
To add to what I said before, I hope that anyone who ever doubted Divinity finally understands how much of a threat he is after this scene! He did literally win right here!
Infinite Vlad(that's what I'll be calling him for now) is so cool! And Divinity is right in this scene: Clone Vlad has become far more powerful than original Vlad, having gone through the Nexus of Infinity! I'm, honestly, a bit surprised that Clone Vlad didn't kill the original, or there wasn't at least a bit of a clash between them to show their power disparity! But, I guess they're the same person, and thus have the same goals, especially after the deal was fulfilled! No need to fight then!
I was so excited to see Divinity get beat up by the ghost trio! Don't get me wrong, he's a fun villain, but he had to get served what was coming to him!
And we get to see them fight him in an incredibly animated sequence! Seems like the Tank didn't want to leave all that animation exclusive to episode 13 and saved some for the finale! The combat is so fun, surreal, and inventive here! Every animator did an incredible job! I can't say much besides that, to be honest! I have a lot more to say about the story than the action! I'm excited to see whatever the Ink Tank has in store next!
We get to see the Limax war! That's wild! What's even wilder is that the Fulnini are there! What are they doing here? They were supposed to be extinct in the 5yl universe!
Well, this is about as close to a confession of love we'll get from Divinity to Vlad! In case you don't know, Kuro has gone on to say on several occasions that Divinity has a special admiration for Vlad, one that crosses into something of a romantic infatuation. This isn't something I expected to be reflected in the comic proper in any obvious way, but, I guess, this is as clear as it could get!
I wasn't expecting Vlad to enter Divinity like that, damn!π³ Dirty jokes aside, this is a great moment that perfectly closes both Vlad's and Divinity's arcs! It's so ironic that Divinity's undoing was brought about by his secret weapon, his golden ticket to infinite power and control, as well as a person he deeply admired. It is, on the other hand, quite poetic that after a life of villainy and bad deeds, Vlad sacrifices his life to bring peace to the universe! It's a perfect bittersweet end to his story!
I was sooo excited to see Disk Jockey appear in the motion comic! He's been my long time favourite 5yl alien, but he's definitely beloved among fans and the Tank themselves, too! Of course they had to bring him in for the finale! I love the little chatter he gets after each line he says! It's very cute, and suits his lore, too, in a way!
Grey Matter was also exciting to see, but I can say that for the entire scene! After having only the Powerhouse Playlist for so long it was exciting to see some other aliens for a change!
And we get an entirely new alien, too: Branch-out! This guy was teased on last year's 5yl anniversary stream, and I was quite curious what his deal was! I thought he might be like a secret 11th Powerhouse Playlist alien, or an alien Ben uses in the And Beyond movie, but, I guess, he's quite the opposite of that, haha! It seems to me that this scene serves to show off some of Ben's non combat oriented aliens, so, I guess, Branch-out is more of a civilian level alien, too! Turns out he's a father and son collaborative creation between Yuri Lowenthal and his son Sagan! Sagan designed Branch-out and Yury voiced him! That's so wonderful!
Since there are two Vlads, he gets two different conclusions to his arc! How convenient! But, honestly, I really do like that Infinite Vlad gets to help out the Chronians! He's powerful enough to be on their level, and beyond a bit, maybe! Plus, this gives Vlad's life a purpose that he didn't have before! I am really curious how Vlad broke the news to the Chronians about their emissary deciding to conquer the multiverse, and got them on his side! That must have been an interesting conversation!
Y'know, I was fully expecting Crawnch's death to be permanent, but, I guess, he's just that resilient! It's great to see that the Orion Squad still has all its members! It's also cute that GoTro became a prosthetic arm for Crawnch!
This scene is chock full of cameos! A paradise for an avid Ben 10 and 5yl fan, which I am! I'm gonna try to name as many as I can, but, again, tell me what I didn't get or got wrong in the comments!
Let's start from the right! In the foreground, we have our first look at 5yl Jimmy Jones along with some girl I don't recognize! In the middle of them is Commander Crow-Shay Searez from the Kylmyss episode of And Beyond. In the background is straight up the real Ink Tank, from left to right we have: Ryan, Kellen, Hurshie, Avery, Rob, and, I'm assuming, Rob's wife Yvonne! Behind them on the wall, we have Swamps, Fridge, and Hugh from the Alien Force episode Double or Nothing. Alongside them is a Lenopan, likely Deefus, as just like the other three, he played Ben!
In the middle, in front of Mr. Smoothy is Pakmar. Behind him we can see Kevin and Zed placing an order, and the kid who used to work at Mr. Smoothy's in Omniverse still works there now! On top of the Mr Smoothy we can see a couple of Aerophibians from the Aeropela episode of And Beyond! We can also see this Nemuina civilian. He was designed by Ash on a stream a long time ago, and has made a cameo in the background of the Ledgerdomain And Beyond! It's nice to see him here, too!
Slightly to the right of Mr. Smoothy, we can see some of OV's background plumbers, mainly Jerry, Bromeba, Molly Gunther(I think), Morty, as well as Magister Patelliday. Near the table behind them, we can see Tak, and the Arachnichimp at that table could be Simian. I don't know who the others might be, though. On the wall behind that table we can see Pax with a girl I can't recognize. A bit to the left of them is Tomma from the Krypton and Vegeta And Beyond, along with Radditz, Broly, and Kakarot, who also cameoed in that same episode!
Behind where the main cast are sitting, we can see Hoaxtar, and to the left of them, on the wall, we can see Rook Ben, Lucy, and the OV background Billy alien sitting there together.
These are all I could recognize in this scene!
I think Ben's much more muscular body as Ben 10k, being partially a result of the Omnitrix fully regenerating his body after death, makes a lot of sense! It's nice that we get to see this transitional phase between 5yl Ben and Ben 10k! It isn't surprising in the slightest, considering that this idea is coming from Kuro, someone who believes that Ben 10k's Omnitrix is integrated into his body!
In this background there are mostly characters we saw before, but we also have Ben's parents: Carl and Sandra, as well as Mr. Baumann, one of Ben's Necrofriggian kids - Glacier, and even Azmuth himself!
In this last background, many characters are obscured, but we can still make out a few notable cameos. From left to right, we have: another Crystalmoon cameo, Starbeard enjoying a smoothie(hilarious!), the Tenatcle Vendor - a background OV alien, Dr. Rabbitnik and Son Nik from the Ages Orbit And Beyond, as well as Yetta from Omniverse.
And that's just about everything I had to point out! This is truly an end of an era!
5yl was something very important to me! It greatly influenced my art and inspired me endlessly! It revived my love for Ben 10! It continues to be one of my biggest interests! It was truly something special! I wish I could say more, but, honestly, everything I've drawn and written in the past speaks loud enough of my love for this incredible fan comic!
So, I want to say thank you to Kuro for coming up with the idea and writing such a great story, to the rest of the Ink Tank for all their contributions that made the comic come to life, and to everyone else who had part in the creation of 5yl for making it even more special!
And thanks to you for reading my 5yl ramblings one last time! I really appreciate even the few of you that read till the end!
