I was reading up on storage buffers and Keith Lostracco mentioned that texture operators are all handled on the GPU ('face smack'). Basically I'm taking a mesh with 500 points, and pulling thier coordinates into the top line of my 500px x 500px 2d glsl shader. Each subsequent row of pixels beneath this top row basically looks up the next highest row of coordinates, moves the points, then stores the new point locations, normals and other useful information into their own 32 bit textures (using rgb channels to store xyz for example ). These of course are fedback into the shader on the next frame. Its also passed on to a glsl mat, applying these calculations to 250k particles I created using a static mesh (static means they should theoretically be instanced on the gpu already - no cpu modifications).

This comp handles motion calculation all on the GPU which means I can pump over 1 million particles without breaking a sweat (sweetness). I made up a little geometry shader which basically billboards each of the point sprites with a sphere texture - a cheap way to look like I have lots of spheres flying around.

I quickly attempted creating full spheres in the geometry shader but I was having problems drawing out the faces (need to think a little deeper about that).

Im using some music triggers drive the incoming 500 points forward, which are basically a resampled trail chop fed into a sweep sop. This allows me to fill in the blank areas that would be there because of the distance the point moves at each frame.
