Oh, questions.  She didn’t want questions right now but wasn’t sure how long she could keep this up, despite her mask being on pretty tight at the moment.  She shrugged slightly and let her head bobble in consideration.  “It was good, I think.  I hope it ends…as well.”  She looked to her plate and chewed her lip, the hand holding her fork resting on the table as if she was suddenly tired.  It just wasn’t going to get any better than this moment, she was sure. Â
“Jean.  How do you feel about children?  Remind me again?” Â
Alright, it was time to stop playing. Jean delicately put down his fork and put his finger on her mouth.
“Darling, love of my life, sun of days, you know how I feel about children. I already told you and I don’t want any of us to get all emotional again without a good reason and I mean a very good reason.”
“So I’m good to remove my finger from your sweet tender fruity lips and then you’re going to tell me what is going on. Okay?”
Tab nodded a bit, and took a shallow breath when he took his finger away. Her lips worked as she set her fork down and looked for the right words. As if there were any to be had.
“I…I guess my birth control failed. I swear I’ve been taking it regular all this time. But…oh, Jean.” She shuffled, her voice going slightly hoarse. “Jean, I’m pregnant. And I don’t know what to do.”
For what seemed to him the millionth time this evening, Jean shushed his own heart to hear hers better. He took her hand and let his thumb caress her wrist until he found her pulse.Â
“First of all my darling, don’t feast on all the blame all for yourself. After all, I should have covered myself before entering, shouldn’t I?”
Tab stared at him for a moment, her eyes glazed with tears.  “Jean. This isn’t your fault. It’s not my fault either, it’s the stupid medication that didn’t do its job. Please, don’t blame yourself? …the doc says that the good thing about it being faulty is that it shouldn’t hurt the baby. That is…it’s a good thing if you think it is.”
“No Darling”
“I don’t think it’s a good thing. I think I never thought that I would met a woman who would want to bare our child. Not only did you say that you want to but furthermore you currently are.” He brushed his lips with his towel. “I don’t think it’s just a good thing. I think it’s excellent, tremendous… I think I have no words to describe how I feel.” Jean gulped to get back his calm.Â
“But I don’t care about how I feel I care about you. Whatever you want to do I’ll here for you. We’ll manage, alright?”
She froze at his first words, her heart nearly stopping as she got a sinking feeling that was worse than her earlier apprehension, it went straight to her toes and kept plummeting towards the earth far below the ship. It left her numb to the point that she nearly missed his rebound. Excellent…what? Good thing…but… Â
“Oh, my god, Jean. It’s…” she trailed off, feeling dizzy as she caught up to where he was on the page. She put a hand on the table and stared at him, pale and silent for a long moment before her usual nature came back in a rush.  “I…I want it and I want you and I don’t know how to make it all work but that’s what I want. I know we can do it.” Â
She took up her water glass with a trembling hand and took a quick gulp.  “I love you. I do, I’m sorry that I told you like this.”
“What do you mean you’re sorry?”
“You told me around a magnificent meal with the superb woman I love while we are both flying several feet above the ground and enjoying it. You can’t be sorry this is the best evening of my life just after the one when we missed that movie.”
She didn’t mean to stare, but she prayed that he caught a glimpse of the love, the gratitude that she held for him in this moment. She choked back a sob and managed a slight grin at the mention of that ill-fated movie trip. Â
“Oh Jean. Only you could see it like that. I…are you really alright with this? It’s such a tangle to me right now, and doesn’t seem real yet.” Â
At her first sob, Jean took a second to get in touch with his emotions and recover form them. Then he did get up and turned around the table to really reach out and touch her. He kneeled at her side and brushed her cheeks to make sure that they were dry.
“Sunbeam, I know I lie a lot. It’s my line of work. I know I can be hard to decipher. It’s why I’m good at it.” He wanted to hug her but he didn’t want her to feel trapped. Instead he just put his hands on her arms enough to feel her heat and stroke her a little. “My innocent star in a bunch of liars and murderers, it’s difficult to be sure. But do you think my orphan heart could have lied to you when I told you that I felt ready to have a family? with you? for the first time of my life I felt like it could happen and I was afraid to became a bad father.” He gulped regretting his last words even if it was exactly what happened. “Do you think I could lie to you now?” Maybe it was the wrong way to turn it. His heart was freezing in his chest but their was few times in his life when he had to be honest transparent and it was one of them.
“I’m sorry, did I ever told you how I feel about my mother?”Â
She took a breath and leaned in, putting her forehead to his for a long moment, his cologne and scent soothing, his words reassuring.  “I know you’re not lying to me. It’s not doubt in you, trust me. It’s doubt in everything else right now…but I know you’re not lying, sweetheart.” She straightened up again and smiled to him, taking one of his hands in her own.Â
“You…are going to be a great dad. But tell me about your mother…please? Pretty sure you haven’t talked about her before.” She patted the bench next to her and squeezed his hand gently. Â
Jean blinked several times, refusing to let his emotions pour outside of his head, inside the real world. Decades of long dried tears were behind that door named big boys don’t cry.
“There is a good reason for that.” He croaked in the middle of an embarrassed badly faked laugh.
He cleared his throat, retrieved his hand, got up, then back on his side of the table. Away from her eyes black like bottomless pits, he found back his usual voice.
“Every orphan, makes up stories about parents. I was not an exception. I had a great imagination.” He smiled still not looking at her face. “I never talk about those childhood silliness. It’s rubbish.”
He gulped.
“I’m an orphan, it’s an easy way of shuffling away from any conversation about parents or childhood, as an adult. I even made sure to never tell you that I was found on a pavement probably only a few hours after my birth. I gave a lot of thought about what could have lead to that result.”
Anger took control over his speech.
“There was no reasons! France is a good and rich country, hospitals are efficient and mostly free. If I had been normal then I should have been born and then left there in the clean hands of the nurses. Instead, there was this dirty pavement and that bloody baby boy naked, weak, silent, not even cleaned from the remnant of someone womb drying on its skin.”
Calm again, he locked his eyes back in hers.
“Once I was cured of my own fairy tales, I realized that my mother must have been a woman beyond despair, a women left alone in her doom who was suffering a pain beyond human reasoning. It hurts to think about that poor thing who gaves up on the life of her own flesh. Maybe she died and no one cared for her or her offspring. It’s dreadful. I will never forgive. No woman should live through this. ”
His words were flowing rapidly, he slowed down his pace.
“I will never abandon you. You can trust me on this. It will never happen. Maybe I won’t be enough, but I won’t give up. never.”
“Oh, Jean...” Â
Words were woefully incomplete in the face of this story. He had never even hinted at the idea that he had such a tragic past, one that was entirely out of his control and had haunted him since his actual birth. She shifted around and put her arms around him, hugging him tight without a sound but slight snuffing, for a good long time. Â
She finally eased back and leveled her eyes with his.  “Jean, you’re more than enough, you’re what I want, and what this baby will need and we both love you. I won’t give up either, I promise.” Â

Jean knew that he was good at reading faces, but her smile afterward made him wonder if he was wrong. He let himself get dragged inside the room deciding that she would tell him whatever was on her mind, tonight. But for the moment, she was the future mother of his children, he had no doubt about that. It would happen.Â
“You’re right, my Sun, where are my priorities”
He closed the door then get back to her. He took her in his arms and gave her all his focus, even forgetting to smile. He wanted to fell entirely that first kiss of the night and who cares if he would lost himself in it for an eternity? He head to forgot his day and remember his love.
That kiss gave her strength, bolstered her resolve and granted focus.  This man…she loved him with all her heart, and this was going to be fine.  She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and nuzzled at his lips.  “I’m glad you’re here, supper is here, and I have some good coffee for after.  Come sit, let’s eat before it gets cold, huh?”
Not letting her go, Jean pucked his nose up in the air, taking some inquisitive sniffs. “True, I hadn’t notice the smell, while I was under your spell.” His smile beamed back at her. “What did you prepare, my dear? It smells delicious!”
Okay, THAT made her laugh, an honest outburst of amusement.  She covered her mouth as she grinned wide and eyed him.  “Me?  Me cook?  Oh honey, I can’t do much here, and I don’t dare try to outdo the kitchens.  I ordered up some roast and mashed potatoes and seared veggies…a little salad…how does that sound, mm?”
“That sound magnificent. I’m sure you ordered it like a true master in ordering food.” He broke the tender hug in which they were still entangled only to take her by the arm. “So let’s go to that table and enjoy that festin. Shall we?”
Tab grinned and walked with him to the table. Â Two place settings with metal covers were set for them, coffee in a carafe and iced water already in glasses. Â She let him seat her at one side and pulled her napkin into her lap as he settled. Â
“I’m not so sure what sort of master I sounded like.  I’m sure I sounded like a hungry woman begging the kitchen staff to make something nice for us, actually…but the begging worked.” Â
She lifted the lids and set them aside, steaming food revealed.   “Oh wow, that looks as good as it smells!”
“You know you can always mention my name.”
“I’m in the good papers of the kitchen staff everywhere I go. I never have to beg.”
He served her then himself. His face was damn serious. He was not lying even more while on the helicarrier 64. The reason he was about to sumon to justify that fact was a lot more doubtful.
“It’s the best way to be sure that they won’t be poisoning your food.”
She glanced over his face, so serious…and a wide honest smile broke over her own. “Sweetheart, that just means I need to take you everywhere with me.” She cut a piece of the roast and sighed as it hit her tongue. She possibly made a small sound of delight too. “Oh, it tastes as good as it smells too. We’ve got such a good kitchen here.”
“if you try to motivate me to praise the cook you know there is no need. She’s my best friend.” He took a bite and slowly took the fork out. “no words can praise her talents only moans of pleasure.”
“I know she is.  You’re lucky to have such a talented friend.  Which makes me doubly lucky.”  She took another bite and then a sip of the tea.  “I get her cooking and your attention with it.  So did you have a good day?” Â
“Yes it was an excellent day. What about you?”
“I mean, I know you know you don’t have to invite me to dinner to have my attention so … What about you?”
