in my au there are foot clan counterparts to the hamato turtles, and the foot turtles are mixed with (in bonnie-mei’s case, semi)aquatic animals

jennika is mixed with an atlantic purple urchin, and parallels donnie

venus/bonnie-mei is mixed with a dainty green tree frog and parallels leo

kirby is mixed with a pyjama shark and parallels raph

lita parallels mikey

electric eel

chambered nautilus

strawberry hermit crab(her design’d be more based on the first one)

doing research for my tmnt au(shredded scutes) and I’m realizing that some minor culture things don’t make sense for my venus and hun

basically rolling with the fact that in next mutation venus is chinese/grew up in china and hun is chinese in 2012. I love found family and vee deserves a good father figure considering the horrors the narrative exposes her to, and hun deserves a chance to do better at being a father because he hasn’t really been there for his bio daughter. His daughter, angel(she changed her name to angel herself), wouldn’t really care much about his culture with their rocky relationship and hun himself probably wouldn’t be super in touch with his past(being a leader of one of the largest gangs in nyc and working with the shredder doesn’t exactly leave a lot of room for appreciating your culture). blah blah venus helps him do better and they kinda learn about it together bonding stuff.

their names are a little… well, not great

Hun, to what my research is telling me, is a surname, and calling people by their surnames is not a thing people do in china(seems impolite from what I’m reading). I don’t think he’s ever even actually given a first name in tmnt, too. Also, Hun is the Hainanese pronunciation of that specific surname, the Mandarin one being Yun and the Cantonese one being Wan.

Venus’s real name in next mutation is Mei Pieh Chi. Mei seems like in china it’s mostly Mandarin? Cantonese even, though it seems like the Cantonese version is transliterated as mui or moy. Also middle names aren’t a thing in china so idk what “pieh” is all about. the “chi” part I can disregard with the assumption it’s meant to be her surname, since it’s a super rare given name and is a boy name anyway, and she can just have hun’s surname(it’s also got a comedy to her using chi “magic” and also having the name chi that doesn’t even work in my au)

and there’s so much here that I just. have no clue what to do about

is there a hainanese name that’s similar enough to mei to give her instead?(maybe something that could make mei a nickname?)

I could make it that hun has a different name and the shredder just started calling that and he was too scared to correct him, leading to everyone thinking that’s his name when it’s not

idk something about trying to work with something not at all in tune with the culture it’s trying to represent and make it more sensical is really difficult when you also have no fucking clue while also trying to tie these two characters together is so

she could keep the name venus until then, and then maybe splinter says something like how he once heard yoshi and shen talking about how if they had kids one day(they were pretty far into their relationship, and while they don’t exactly have the lifestyles of people who’d be great with kids- shen’s a dedicated businesswoman and yoshi’s got his dojo- they definitely wanted to be able to settle down like that) they would’ve named their daughter mei(or miwa…) and venus could take that, but she also doesn’t really take to the hamatos like her siblings do.
