     “We all do. He’s a national hero. Pour one out for Dimbem.”

     “Dirmbum.”

     “Burning question. The fans want to know. If you had to fuck a Jaeger...”

     “Dude. Not even Einstein got this rock-fucking-hard over math probably. Like. You are like. About to nut just, ev-er-y-where. I’m actually gonna – step back,” she does, “just so I’m out of the splash zone. I mean fuck. It’s just some numbers. I can say numbers too. Sixty-nine. Four twenty. Four hundred eighty-nine,” she’s ticking them off on her fingers. “That’s sixty-nine plus four twenty. Where’s my doctorate.”

     “All I’m saying is that ‘Chuck’ seems a little juvenile. Even Charlie sounds better. Charlie Hansen. That’s a guy I wouldn’t mind seeing a poster of on my daughter’s wall.”

     He’s spent too long feeling sorry for himself and not long enough actually sourcing his band-aids. They’re buried under a pack of latex gloves. On his way back over to Nova he reflects that this might be the most surgical thing he’s done in a good long while. He puts his hands on her shoulders to steer her over to sit on his desk, and takes her arm with a level of care he’d apply to handling eggs or expensive commemorative plates. “Oh. D’you have a preference?” He offers her the tin to take her pick. It’s Jaeger-themed. For kids, you know. “I think I ran out of Crimson Typhoon ones.” 

     He looks sidelong at Leo. “D’you want a Magic Star.”

     Oh good. Another one.      “You can either come up with a better answer now or kiss goodbye to the little William Hudson action figures.”

     “So.” Marion leans forward, expression pinched somewhere between interested and distant. “Help me to help you. What kind of pilot do you want to be?”
