Sweet mewling filled the room. Brenda, finally showered and feeling human, lay back in her hospital bed. Sharon sat beside her, both of them clad in flannel pajamas—one pink, one purple, both plaid.

Suddenly, whimpers turned to cries, and newest Mom began to leak.

“I just put these on,” Brenda whined as wet spots appeared on her top.

Sharon picked up their newborn son and quickly handed him over. “Don’t worry—I packed plenty that match perfectly.”

“One of the many reasons I love you.”

“I love you—and our little Matthew.”

“Emily, Ricky, Rusty, Matty.”

Sharon smiled. “Perfection.”

Summertime was hard on the body, especially one overfilled with a baby. Fortunately, the heat departed, in favor of the breezes of fall in LA. After a taxing workday, Brenda snuggled into their king bed, swollen feet being massaged.

There were more weeks of pregnancy and the move to their new home to deal with, but none of that mattered. Listening to Sharon talking to their son and feeling him wriggle in response—was everything.

“Better, Honey?”

“Yes…”

“It’ll be over soon, I promise.”

Brenda grinned. “That’s what I said.”

“Honey, I’m…”

“Don’t say you’re old.”

“Heavens no, look at me.” Sharon laughed and tucked herself close to her wife.

“I’m serious, babe. Look at the ultrasound. Third time’s the charm.”

“What did the doctor say?”

“That I’ll need to come in for amniocentesis and bi-weekly scans. Starting on Tuesday.”

“We’re really going to be a family.”

“We were that already.” Brenda kissed her partner.

Rusty chose that moment to appear—ears clearly open. “Did I just hear you say you’re having a baby?”

“You’re going to be a big brother.”

Another quiet dusk-drenched evening on the terrace—the exact spot where their affection blossomed many moons ago. Santa Ana winds through the fronds of the potted palms around them, making soothing rustling sounds that drown out the city.

Bodies pressed together, legs intertwined, Brenda and Sharon shared passionate kisses. Hands wandered up and over heated skin. As they dipped lower in sync—swollen, sticky flesh touching just so—gave rise to a chorus of satisfied sighs.

Stepping off the plane at LAX, Brenda, Sharon, and Rusty all trudged toward baggage claim. They’d left one year and returned in another, as ceremonious as it was—but the return had them all melancholy.

Sharon struggled leaving her eldest baby behind. Brenda, because she hated to see Sharon crestfallen. And Rusty, because he was the type to take on the emotions of everyone around him. He felt so lucky to have tripped into a family. He instantly had siblings and two mothers who would quite literally kill for him.
