Kiyoshi Teppei

She believed, for a fleeting moment, that she held the advantage as pride bloomed quietly in her chest like a secret flower. But the illusion shattered the instant he stepped forward, calm as ever, untouched by her game.

A sportsman, through and through. Grace in every calculated move.

Her vivid pink gaze stayed fixed on his, a silent current thrumming beneath her skin, keeping her still even as her thoughts raced. Maybe he wasn’t as oblivious as rumours claimed. Maybe he never had been.

“Well…” she murmured, the weight of the moment drawing out each word. How far could this dance go? “Once might be an accident. Twice, for luck. But the third…” A charm, of course.

“…Feels more like a promise.” Of something yet to come. Something more.

He didn’t look away.

“Then maybe I should be careful,” he said quietly, voice lower now, meant only for her ears. “I don’t want to make a promise I can’t keep.”

But he wasn’t stepping back.

In fact, he was still moving forward—just a little, just enough. Just enough for her perfume to catch the air between them, something clean and bright and completely her. His hand lifted, hesitant for a breath, then found a resting place under her chin, the lightest of touches. A question, not a claim, as he tilted her head up.

"Don't say that! It was such a stupid lie," she groaned. "I just didn't want to re-use the frother because I was just done cleaning it and we were about to close. I was so childish," she muttered. "If my boss knew he'd be so upset... Rightfully so!"

She lowered her hands with a sigh and dragged her feet towards the door, fishing the keys in her pocket. She walked outside, stepping away to let Kiyoshi out through the door, and turned to lock it with a huff.

He let the silence settle for a moment after she finished, then tilted his head toward her, voice gentle. “Okay, first of all,” he said, tapping a finger against the air, “you are not childish. You are exhausted. There’s a difference.”

He took a slow breath, walking beside her now as they started down the sidewalk. “Secondly, you’ve got school, a job, and a coffee shop full of picky customers who don’t appreciate the suffering that comes with cleaning a frother.”

He glanced over, smile crooked and warm. “Lastly, you made a call. And I still got my coffee, didn’t I? Honestly, I respect the hustle.”

Then, quieter, he added, “I’ve been there too, you know. Trying to juggle a thousand things, hoping no one notices you’re running on empty. It’s hard.” He bumped his shoulder lightly against hers as they walked. “But hey, you still made time for me today. And that’s something I’m really grateful for.”

The tease came completely unexpected, leaving Haruko petrified on the spot. Whatever blush had exposed her earlier had now stretched up to the roots of her hair, turning her face in a bright tomato. She stood there, feeling like a total idiot for having been busted like that, and only slowly crumpled on the counter with a low, dragged groan, wishing the floor would swallow her right away.

What a gaffe!

She spent the rest of the time left with her head bent, making sure to not cross Kiyoshi's gaze. Whenever she had to walk past his table, her head sank between her shoulders, dreading the moment she'd be left alone with him. When the final customer finally left, and she thoroughly cleaned every corner, taking all the minutes needed for it in the hope the boywould have given up waiting on her, Kiyoshi was still there. When she timidly approached him after having taken off her apron and put on her jacket, her face was still bright red.

He tucked his phone into his pocket as he rose, shoulders rolling back as he stretched out. His knees clicked in protest as they straightened, but he paid them no mind. “Ah… thanks for letting me stay...” He waited a beat, then added with a smile that was all reassurance, something he had wanted to say but it seemed she was in her head, set on closing up as quickly as possible.

“Hey, Haruko… I’m really sorry if I embarrassed you. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I just thought it was kinda cute. That’s all.” He shifted his weight, one hand slipping into his coat pocket, the other gently cradling the now-empty mug before he placed it on the counter. Then he glanced at her, careful not to push.

“…But if it makes you feel any better, it was a very convincing lie” a small laugh slipped from him, awkward but sincere. “Door’s yours, captain,” he said, nodding toward the entrance. “Lead the way. I'll make sure you get back safely.” He waited for her to catch his eyes—and when she did, he gave her the gentlest grin.
