when i was a teenager it felt very revolutionary to be cruel to myself. like some kind of slow passive protest against how much everything hurt. i starved myself of sleep and food and tenderness because it felt right. it felt sharp and angry and radical and i wanted to be those things. adulthood is the realisation that the world is already working to cut into you well before you learn how to do it yourself. caring for yourself and others is the real protest

[Video Description: An ad with piano music over it all, showing an elderly woman in her home, knitting, when two younger men walk by her window, which catches her attention. She stares out her window at them as they kiss each other while walking, the old lady staring in disbelief. Cut to the old woman approaching a residence with a broom in hand, staring up at the second floor window where a small rainbow Pride flag is hanging. The old woman stares up at it and mutters "Ridiculo", before getting up on a ladder with her broom to remove the flag. Focus on the flag fluttering to the ground as church bells chime. The scene then cuts to the couple from before, approaching their home with grocery bags in hand before one stops and stares at the second floor, stopping his partner who then drops the groceries as he too stares up. It's then revealed that the small pride flag had been replaced with a gigantic, hand-knit pride flag. It then cuts back to the old woman's home, where a tin of rainbow-colored yarn sits on her table. The hands of the old woman are holding and fondly touching an old black and white photo of two young smiling women, leaning against each other. Cut to the old woman's face as she stares out with a look of happy pride on her face. At the end of the video, the name "Idealista" appears on screen, followed by "buon pride" along with a rainbow. End VD.]
The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinions™️".
In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinion™️ is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.

Pike Trickfoot did terrible things, and that's wonderful.
In this essay, I will..
Ahahahaha alright alright alright, the last three episodes of season 4 were a lot and I wanna talk about the various reactions I've been seeing to Pike. Also included are my thoughts (that nobody asked for) on why her terrible, immoral choices are actually a great thing for her character.
Let's first recap what Pike's been dealing with since the season began:
1. Felt abandoned by friends who haven't checked on her and Grog in a year.
2. Sees first-hand the damage caused by the Chroma Conclave and blames herself (and to an extent Vox Machina) for not stopping it faster (Survivor's guilt! Get your fresh survivor's guilt over here!).
3. Encounters a former mentor/priestess of the Everlight who mysteriously turned completely fucking evil (and necrotic).
4. Starts having weird visions about an ancestor no one told her about who is somehow connected to sealing away the Whispered Prick.
5. Loses her grandpa in a horribly traumatic way.
6. Not only can't convince Scanlan to join them but overhears him say that leaving the team was the best decision he'd ever made.
7. Loses Grog - the one person she could count on to be by her side.
Throughout all of this, she receives NO help from the Everlight. Whether this was because Pike cut herself off (like in season 1) or the Everlight was cut off from her by other means, we don't know. What we do know is that this is a lot. I wouldn't expect ANYONE to be thinking rationally by this point.
And even then, it took THIS MUCH for Pike to reach that point where she became broken and hopeless an vulnerable enough to be manipulated by the WO.
I'm not gonna argue Pike's innocence. She brought the WO back by willingly giving her blood. Fought her friends. Stopped them from getting to the WO. Hurt Grog. Put the entire world in danger. NONE OF THAT IS OKAY. No matter how she was manipulated or how her mental state was or what she had going on, that doesn't make her actions excusable. They are, however, understandable - even as understandable as Keyleth risking the entire realm for the hope of saving Vax.
But I've seen posts saying Pike should have been stronger or "helped herself" or that her actions were disappointing or that she's blaming everyone for her problems and I think that's completely missing the point. Plus, it gets addressed BY HER IN HER OWN LAMENT:
"Who heals me?"
She's already been strong - for way too long! Pike is always the one to help and heal. Just this once, she's allowed to be weak, angry, and even cruel. Her grief, helplessness, and depression skewed her entire world. It cast everything through a negative lens and made her genuinely believe her friends didn't care about her aside from what she could do for them.
So...Pike did bad things when bad things happened to her, and it makes her such a realistic character whose redemption is going to be all the brighter for it. Because the Everlight is the goddess of...say it with me...
*REDEMPTION*
That's the thing with dynamic characters...they have arcs. They make horrible choices that have lasting consequences. They grieve in unhealthy ways. They do things that we, without the trauma and grief that they've been through, would never do.
I cannot imagine how dull it would have been if Pike had just been a-okay this entire time, or if Gideon's words hadn't gotten to her. She made her choices. She fucked up.
And now she gets to make it right because she is Pike Motherfucking Trickfoot and that is what she does.
One thing I loved from the most recent batch of tlovm episodes is that it confirms that the Briarwoods were not in fact goth before the necromancy and the vampirism. Delilah reanimated Sylas and then they both went “Oh shit, we’ve simply got to go get the aesthetic to match.” On their way out of town they had to stop by the tailor to get some new gothic horror chic outfits. They’re already going down the dark path, why not fully commit? You want necromancer and her vampire husband? Oh they will fucking serve necromancer and her vampire husband. They will put their whole pussies into necromancer and her vampire husband. They don’t even hide that they’re evil they fully broadcast it on purpose and love it the whole time. No hiding behind a facade, just full on long sweeping black dress and menacing tailcoat and gloves and haunted looking castle. Delilah’s favorite color used to be lavender but not any fucking more it’s black now baby. Sylas makes a point of extra good dental hygiene to make sure those fangs really pop. You might hate them, but you’ve got to admit they’ve got an impressive commitment to the lifestyle.

Being obsessed with Genshin Impact is fun because you never know if they're going to deliver an amazing payoff to that thing they're dropping crumbs about three years from now, if you're going to wait forever only for them to fumble it, or if they're going to completely forget about it.
imo you get the most out of engaging with media when you strike a balance between treating characters as people (reading interiority into their actions, considering the effect of various aspects of their identity, etc etc) and as vehicles for storytelling (what narrative purpose do they serve, how do their actions and personality function to convey the themes of the work, etc etc). because of course characters are literary devices but also there’s a reason we use literary devices written to embody realistic people in order to tell stories
