“I see nothing wrong ethically with the idea of correcting single gene defects through genetic engineering. But I am concerned about any other kind of intervention, for anything else would be an experiment, which would impose our will on future generations and take unreasonable chances with their welfare ... Thus such intervention is beyond the scope of consideration.”
In this world, there exist humans, elves, vampires, faeries, angels, demons, and many more, all striving for their right to live. Humans, despite their simplicity, are the strongest and richest of all. Their ability to quickly adapt and adjust to their surroundings allowed them to spread to nearly all corners of the earth. Wherever they go, they bring with them their music, customs, art, and culture; sharing it with those who already reside in the area. But they are a brutish race whom kill even their own kind with wars and diseases, they care not for anyone but their own blood and dispose of those who get in their way, with little thought to the consequences.
They have no self-control, only doing things for themselves and never for others. This is the basis of their culture, that compel them to search for the so called “reasons” as to why we’re alive. Their “science” is their pride. It has caused wars, cured illnesses, and helped with disabilities; but that all is outshone by their lack of respect towards other creatures. A section of their science dedicates itself to the genetics of their species and others’. Within this group exist a select few who seek to genetically alter all other creatures.
I do not know how many people were affected by those who experimented on my brothers and I, but it had to be many. My entire pack, about 300 tiger demons, was wiped out save myself and four others that we know of. But I can’t call myself one of them any longer.... we’re all changed because of what they did.....

I must’ve been about six when they came, I don’t remember for sure; memory loss is a side effect of their tampering, but I do remember that the wind seemed to pick up when they came in their metal bird and momma told me to hide with my brothers and the other kids. We all hid in our clubhouse; a secret cave we’d discovered and shared together; it was big enough where the thirty youngest could move around with little problems.... but there were others with us now, the bigger kids, I could hear my big brother, Rinji, among them, telling the little ones to be quiet. In total, there were about 120 of us, all pressed against each other in that tight space. I remember clearly that Atsuhi and I were near the middle, pressed against two girls about our ages, maybe a year older; one had startling white hair, and the other had streaks of black in hers. Our ears twitched as we listened for any sounds outside to tell us what was happening, but we were too far from the village for anything to be heard.
Soon, one of the elder kids decided to go out and see what was going on, taking with him his litter brothers. This alarms the little ones, for something must be wrong if it's been too long for even the big kids.... and soon there is a wailing bunch of toddlers who need tending to. To calm them, the older ones nearest them - mostly girls if I recall- started softly singing to them, trying to calm them so we are not discovered.
It must’ve been a few hours, things were darker now and the singing had stopped, but not a single child was asleep..... We were all waiting for our parents to return to us and make us safe again. We had no idea that we’d never see them again......

I don’t know how long we stayed like that, a few days at least, we weren’t going to leave unless our clan members came back to us. We only left to hunt or keep clean. We always went in packs of ten at least; and each pack consisted of two of the older kids and then the rest ranged from twelve to four; any younger and you were fed by the big girls. We did our best to have siblings stick together, but some families had to be split in two to keep packs small enough.
On this morning, my brothers and I were out to bathe with the white haired girl, her sister, and maybe five others. I sat in silence as I let the water rush over my head, making my auburn hair stick to my head. My brothers were just a bit downstream from me with the other boys, all facing the other way as us girls stood below the water fall and let it rinse the dirt from our bodies. I watched them carefully, my small ears twitching with each sound.
The water rushing around me drowns out all noises, but I can see my brothers’ bodies stiffen. Soon, a large black.... thing.... it looked like a bird.... but it wasn’t. Birds’ wings go up and down, not in circles. Rinji yells at us, telling us to get to cover as the bird-thing gets closer. The two girls quickly run and hide in the bushes. But why? What’s wrong? I stand still under the waterfall until Atsuhi rushes over and picks me up. He carries me into the shade of the forest, and we watch as the bird lands. Its then that I realize it’s not a bird.... it’s a machine. Men dressed in mud come out, followed by two people in funny white robes.
Who are they? Why doesn’t Rinji run? I looked back to my eldest brother only to scream. He’s on the ground, coughing up blood with a hand on his stomach. Pushing my way out of Atsuhi’s arms, I ran to Rinji and started to pull him towards the forest. What happened next, I don’t remember; all I remember is hearing Atsuhi screaming my name, a pain going all through my shoulder and then darkness.....
