Everything on this blog will be SFW.
The vast majority of these will be set years later when theyâre adults.
Side pairings will show up, but it wonât be often, and Iâll always tag them.

Written for Shadamy Week 2026. Prompt: height difference.
--
Amy wanted to try skydiving, so she invited a bunch of her friends to join her. Most of them passed because they could either fly or glide and thus wouldnât get much out of it, and Blaze backed off the moment heights were mentioned.
Sonic was the only one whoâd said yes. The two of them had broken up a few months prior, and while they still got along just fine, Amy didnât want to give him the wrong impression by asking him to hang out one-on-one. She racked her brain for anyone daring enough who couldnât already fly, and Shadow came to mind. She assumed heâd say no to avoid spending time with Sonic, but he agreed the moment she said the word âskydiving.â Surprised yet relieved, she happily made the plans.
Sonic seemed surprised, too, but Shadow brushed off his questions and strapped himself in next to Amy on the plane. Although Shadow was trying to seem casual, Amy could see his fists were clenched more than usual.
Unfortunately, Amy didnât have time to think about it because her focus shifted between Shadow and the window. She looked down to the ground thousands of feet below them, and her brain drew a certain parallel, one that she always tried not to think about. Sonic and Shadow both noticed she was tense, but she gave a smile she hoped looked convincing and just said she was excited. Sonic shrugged and smiled back, but Shadow studied her expression for a while longer, making her feel transparent.
Amyâs nerves skyrocketed when the plane leveled out at its maximum height. The attendant was running through the instructions one last time, but her gaze kept flicking back to the open hatch of the plane. Her stomach lurched.
âMiss? Miss?â
Amy jumped. The attendant, a friendly sugar glider who reminded her of Ray, was tilting his head down to try and make eye contact with her, concern wrinkling his forehead. Realizing she was biting her nails, Amy tore her hand away and forced another smile. âSorry, sorry! What is it?â
âItâs important to remember the procedure, maâam. Are you alright?â
Shadowâs low voice came from her right side. âThey canât force you to do this.â Amy looked up, and he met her nervous expression with a reassuring nod. âI will get you down from here. Just ask.â
Amy nodded, but her expression remained tight.
Itâs not me Iâm worried about!
The attendant looked between the two of them, then showed her a kind smile. âYour friend is right. You can always ride back down in the plane if youâre not comfortable.â The pilot cleared his throat from the cockpit, and the attendant chuckled. âNo refunds, though.â
Amy laughed stiffly and tried to pay attention for the rest of the explanation, ignoring the rumbling of her stomach and the weight of Shadowâs gaze.
At last, he finished and unbuckled the three hedgehogs in preparation. Sonic sprang up from his seat and stretched his legs with a smirk. âAlright! You guys ready?â
Amyâs smile was wooden as she stood. âYep! Letâs go!â
She could see Shadow nod out of the corner of her eye, but he remained silent.
Sonic saluted. âSweet! Iâll see you at the bottom. Last one thereâs a rotten Eggbot!â
With that, he bolted toward the hatch. The attendant didnât have time to protest before Sonic launched himself off the edge.
âWoohoo!â
Amy breathed deeply and took two hesitant steps forward. Even over the roar of the plane, the soft footfalls behind her made her heart race.
Donât follow me.
Donât jump.
I canât do this again.
A hand rested on her shoulder. Gentle as it was, it still made her jump.
Shadowâs expression was equal parts compassion and intensity. âNo one will blame you if you change your mind.â
Amy hastily shrugged his hand off and backed away. âI-Iâm fine!â
Shadow glanced back and forth between his hand and her expression. His jaw clenched. âNo, youâre not.â He stepped closer again, holding his hands up as if she were an injured animal. âJust hold on. Iâve got you.â
Amyâs breathing grew fast and shallow in the thin air, worsening with every step he took closer toward her...and toward the open hatch behind her. She shook her head and pressed her hands against his shoulders, holding him back. âNo! Donât get any closer!â
The sugar glider laughed nervously, extending a hand. âAh...itâs alright! Plenty of people get nervous. Donât feel pressured!â His head whipped around, and he hissed toward the cockpit. âWe really canât do a refund? Just this once?â
Amy shoved Shadow back harder than sheâd meant to, and both of them staggered. âStay back! Iâm fine!â
Shadowâs eyes flashed, and Amy saw his shoes light up in preparation for a burst of speed. She choked, then whipped out her hammer in the same breath. She adopted a defensive stance, even as her teeth chattered. âI...I s-said stand back! Iâm warning you!â
Shadow halted immediately, and Amy heard his breath get caught in his throat. His eyes were locked on the open hatch, wide and unseeing. At last, he gritted his teeth and shook himself out of his stupor. âIâm not letting you do this!â
Shadow dropped into a crouch, as if preparing to strike. Amyâs heart pounded rapid-fire in her veins, and she lifted her hammer in preparation to counter him, but then the plane shook and rumbled around them. The turbulence knocked Amy off-kilter, and the parachute in her pack threw off her balance. A sharp whine of panic left her throat, and she stumbled back a few steps toward the hatch, flailing her arms as she went.
A curse left Shadowâs lips, and he was an inch away before she could blink. He yanked the hammer from her shaking hands. Amyâs heart seized, but instead of attacking, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. She could see the flash of an emerald in the corner of her eye, and a frantic but confident voice muttered, âChaos Control!â
In a blinding flash, they were gone.
The sugar glider flinched, then blinked his eyes open.
The pilot checked over his shoulder, similarly dumbfounded, then sighed.
âHow about a fifty percent discount?â
--
Amy froze the moment her feet met the ground, eyes wide and heart pounding.
The arms pulled her closer, and a whisper met her ears.
âShhhh...itâs alright. Iâve got you.â
A ragged gasp tore through Amyâs throat...and she broke. She threw her arms around Shadow and dug her fingers into his back, shaking as tears spilled from her eyes. He combed his fingers through her quills soothingly. âItâs okay. Iââ
âDonât go!â
Shadow paused again, then scratched gentle fingers along her back. âIâm not going anywhere. Iâm here. Itâsââ
âYou have to stay!â Amy blurted, still burying her face in his chest. âDonât go back up there! I CANâT HANDLE IT AGAIN!â
Shadow finally stopped. He pulled away, holding her by her shaking shoulders. He frowned, searching her expression for answers. âWhat do you mean, âagain?ââ
Amyâs heart clenched. She tried to blink back the tears, but they kept falling. âTh-the...â Another sob broke through. âTh-the ARK! All those years ago! Y-youââ
Amyâs voice died, and her eyes squinted shut. Shadowâs voice was softer than before. âWhat are you talking about? We were just standing. I didnât fall.â
Amyâs head snapped up. She searched his face through bleary eyes, finding nothing but blank confusion.
Somehow, it made her blood boil. A growl, hoarse and weak, rumbled in her throat, and she took ahold of her quills and yanked at the roots. âItâs like Iâm the only one who remembers! Even Sonic doesnât care, and heâs the one who didnât catch you!â
Shadow remained silent for some time aside from an inquisitive sound...and then he choked. Firm but gentle fingers looped with hers, coaxing them out of their death-grip on her quills and relieving the pain. Amy tilted her head up.
Sympathy and shock clashed on Shadowâs face. âYou saw that? When I...â
Amy sniffled and nodded. âEveryone else was at the closest window, watching, but...â She paused to take in another shuddering breath. âThey were all crowded around it, and there wasnât any room for me, so...I...I found a lower one, and it had a better view ofââ
The scene that had been seared into her brain for years forced its way to the surface for the millionth time. She pressed against the glass, helpless as the silvery sheen faded from his body, a star losing its luster as it fell to Earth. Sheâd stubbornly plastered herself to the window alone for what felt like years, certain that a flash of gold would swoop back down to be the hero she knew.
Instead, the doors slid open to reveal one hedgehog. Not two.
Shadowâs voice was quiet, but it still made her flinch as he drew her out of the memory. âItâs okay. I made it. I didnât...â
Both of them winced.
âIâm here. Really here,â he repeated, his tone heavier than before.
âBut you werenât. For so long,â Amy croaked, averting her gaze. Her eyes squeezed shut, and she held herself. âI had nightmares every night. For months.â Her tears were starting to dry, but her body still heaved with exertion. An involuntary whimper left her. âSometimes I still do.â
Amy remained there for a few moments, wondering if Shadow would say anything. Instead, his arms wrapped around her once more to hold her close.
âIâm sorry.â
Amyâs muscles locked up, but he stayed put, and the tension eventually melted out of her body. She tucked her head underneath Shadowâs chin and rested her cheek in his fur until she stopped shaking. Her throat was raw and she could feel a headache building, but her breathing and heart rate were evening out.
Shadow pulled away only after she did. âI know what itâs like to have images you wish you could erase. If Iâd known you would see that, I...â
âItâs my fault,â Amy cut in.
Shadow paused with his mouth open, visibly baffled, then sighed and practically rolled his eyes. âYou are not going to take the blame for that.â
âButââ
Shadow shook his head. âI told you I was keeping a promise that day, not making one. That promise was made before you were even born. You reminded me of someone very important to me and convinced me to keep it, and Iâm glad you did.â
Amy opened up her mouth to speak, but he held up a finger. âIâm old enough to make my own decisions. I chose to help our friends. I chose to fight my prototype. I chose to fly out there knowing there was a chance I wouldnât make it back, and I chose to push Sonic away because I knew he only had enough energy left to make it alone. I have no regrets about that day, and if you want to blame someone, itâll have to be me.â
Amy started at the declaration. Her heart fluttered oddly.
Shadowâs intense expression softened. âI know a thing or two about nightmares. Iâm sorry I became one of yours.â
Amyâs heart swelled, but then a few laughs escaped her, lightening her mood. âYou donât have to be so dramatic about it. Iâm always happy to have you around.â She was rewarded with a shy smile. She soon groaned and held a hand up to her face. âProbably shouldnât have picked skydiving, of all things. I canât believe I didnât think of that...â
Shadowâs smile and stance grew more casual. âIâm still glad you invited me.â
Amy scoffed. âWhy? So I could latch onto you and cry all over you?â
Shadow snorted and brushed off his chest fur, smirking. âNo. So I could keep you from doing something stupid.â Amy balked, so he nodded. âIâve never wanted to try skydiving. I just came here to stop you from jumping out of that plane, or at least keep anything from going wrong.â
âSkydiving isnât that dangerous,â Amy argued. âThere are tons of safety precautions. We have parachutes for a reason,â she insisted, pointing to her own pack.
âAnd what happens if they donât deploy?â Shadow asked, tugging at one of the straps on her shoulder.
âIt will! The attendant said they inspect the equipment regularly.â
Shadowâs eyes met hers. âAnd you trust him? For sure?â
âOf course I do! Heâs nice!â Amy protested, puffing her cheeks out.
âWhat if he wasnât in charge of that? What if someone else packed it wrong or there was a defect at the factory?â
Amy stalled out. âWell, uh...thatâs what the reserve parachute is for.â
Shadow crossed his arms. âAnd if that gets torn?â
âHmph!â Amy pulled out her hammer for the second time that day and held it over her shoulder. âI can propeller hammer to slow myself down. I always have a backup plan!â
âHow long?â
The smug smile dropped off of Amyâs face. âHuh?â
âWe were ten thousand feet in the air. How long can you propeller hammer?â
Amy gaped, glancing from her hammer to Shadow again. âWhat do you...â
There was a weariness behind his eyes that wasnât there before. âI know you get dizzy. How long would you be able to keep that up? Fifty feet? A hundred? The full ten thousand? How long would it be before you were just falling?â
Amy looked back at the hammer, then put it away. âShadow...â
âWhat if it does deploy, but you get tangled in the strings? What if you wind up off course? What if you fall in water and no oneâs there to disentangle you?â
âSonic would definitelyââ
Shadow gestured to the sky. When Amy squinted, she could just barely pick out a blue dot all by itself. She bit her lip. âWell...the attendant would have...â
âWhat if it were Eggman?â
Shadowâs arms were still crossed over his chest, and his feet were planted. She shook her head and placed a gentle hand on his cheek. âCome on, Shadow. If I let all of that get to me, Iâd never get to actually live my life. Iâm not going to let a little risk get in the way of a good adventure!â
Shadow kept his steely gaze on her. âI know. Youâre a magnet for trouble. Youâre the most reckless person Iâve ever met.â He took in a breath, held it for a few seconds, then sighed. He reached up and held her hand, leaning his face into it. âAnd you remind me of someone Iâll never get back. I canât not worry about you.â
Shadow didnât look away. The pain in his eyes ran distant and deep; his tears were long gone, leaving only the resigned visage of one whoâd long since decided: never again.
Several moments passed before Shadow let out an exasperated sigh. He uncrossed his arms, but he didnât let go of her hand. âSo thatâs why...if youâre going to keep foolishly putting yourself in danger...â
âHey!â
Shadow scoffed and pulled the Chaos Emerald out of his pack again. Her eyes widened as he held it between them, staying close. âI want you to bring me with you so I can always get you out of it.â
Amy froze. Despite the playful jab, Shadowâs features were stone-serious in the glow of the emerald. His hand didnât waver in hers. He didnât even blink. Amy was sure most would find the intensity unsettling, but the idea of someone focused so much on her, caring so much for her safety, after a life like hers...
Amyâs cheeks spread in a slow, easy smile. âSounds good, but I think we should probably keep our feet on the ground for a while.â
Shadowâs features relaxed, and he squeezed her hand warmly. âThat works for me.â
Maybe a little certainty wasnât such a bad thing.
Years later, Sonic teased them about having landed before him, saying heâd always known Amy fell fast and he wasnât surprised to see Shadow did, too.
((Ah yes, 10,000 feet. The ideal height difference. Weâve found it))
Amy and Shadow had been dating for a few months when he started asking her over to his place on the weekends. Rouge and Omega were gone on the fourth weekend, so Amy was extra excited for the alone time...at least until she went to the bathroom shortly after she got there. Her heart sank.
For the first time, she wished Rouge were still there.
Amy left the bathroom and shyly told Shadow she had to go home. He asked why, his face a mix of disappointment and concern. She stalled out and cringed, fishing for an excuse.
Shadowâs eyes narrowed. He stared for a few moments, and then his eyes popped open wide. She saw him think for a second, count on his fingers, and nod decisively. Shadow told her he knew what was going on and ushered her back to the bathroom, encouraging her to take a shower while he âpreparedâ some things.
Baffled, Amy did so. When she was finished, she found Shadow had left her backpackâincluding the change of clothes sheâd broughtâjust outside the door. On top of that, heâd placed a stack of menstrual products heâd apparently sensed she needed. Thrilled that she wouldnât have to leave after all, Amy made use of them and hopped back out.
She spotted Shadow in the kitchen. Before she could even say anything, he nodded to a glass of water and some painkillers heâd left on the counter in case she needed them. He didnât pry further, giving her the opportunity to leave it at that, but she swallowed the pills and asked how heâd known anyway.
Shadow took the glass and shrugged as he started washing it, merely stating that he knew how to count. Heâd lived with women and girls his whole life and didnât like it when his loved ones were in pain, so he knew the basics. When Amy asked if Rouge would be okay with him borrowing from her, Shadow looked confused. He said heâd gotten them from his own supply. He kept an emergency stash just in case anyone needed them while visiting.
He then took her hands in his and kissed her cheek, saying that when heâd told her to let him know if she needed anything, heâd meant it. Even if he didnât have something on hand, heâd gladly teleport out and bring it back in a flash. She hugged him tightly, touched.
Shadow kept his promise, bringing her anything she needed that weekend. They cuddled on the couch and watched some of her favorite romcoms. He made meals he knew she loved, brought back her favorite ice cream with Chaos Control, and gave her a hot water bottle pillow to make her more comfortable. Although it wasnât the visit Amy had been hoping for, she decided she couldnât have been happier.

((It was recently revealed in Geraldâs journal that Maria was the one who designed Shadowâs air shoes:
â
Amy took her daughter out shoe shopping one afternoon. They returned home in the evening to find Shadow, and the little girl hopped forward in her brand new sneakers to show him. She stomped on the ground eagerly, and the soles lit up, briefly flashing in bright colors. Her face lit up to match the vivid light show.
âLook, look! Iâm just like you, Daddy!â
Shadowâs heart stopped for a moment, then throbbed painfully. He held in a breath behind clenched teeth.
The girlâs smile faded, slowly wrinkling into a concerned little frown, and she asked what was wrong. Shadow paused for a moment, then gulped and forced a grin onto his face. He told her he loved the shoes and she looked really cool, but the frown didnât leave her face.
Amy asked him about it later that night, and the truth immediately spilled out. Maria had been the one to design Shadowâs shoes, and sheâd whimsically lamented that she couldnât have cool light-up shoes, too. Sheâd been hoping they could match. If sheâd survived, she might have been able to make that dream a reality.
It wasnât the first time their daughter had reminded Shadow of Mariaâtheyâd even named her âMiaâ in honor of herâbut it wasnât usually this bittersweet. Amy held him as he calmed down, saying she understood.
Once the moment passed, however, Amy fixed him with a serious gaze heâd never seen before. She told him sheâd been laying out Miaâs clothes for the next day, including the shoes, but Mia told her she woudnât wear them because she didnât want to upset Daddy again. No amount of encouragement would change her mind.
Amy told Shadow that no matter what had happened in his pastâin either of their pastsâthey couldnât let that affect their ability to be parents. There was a little girl out there whoâd been excited to share an experience with him, and now she was ashamed and thought sheâd done something wrong. Whether intentionally or not, Shadow had let her believe she was responsible for a decades-old trauma, and he couldnât just leave things there.
She needed to know her father loved her.
Shadow just stared for a while, his jaw locked with shame and fear. He knew she was right. He asked Amy if she could help him apologize. She nodded, visibly relieved, but told him he needed to do it soon.
Shadow knocked on Miaâs door a few minutes later. Luckily, she was still awake. He and Amy came into the room, and he gave the apology Amy had helped him rehearse. For the first time, he told Mia about her pseudo-namesake. He didnât delve into details about death that he knew she wouldnât be ready for, but he told her she reminded him of a wonderful person he didnât get to see anymore, and while heâd always miss her, it was important to honor her memory. He apologized for losing sight of that and told Mia that he was proud of her and that Maria would have loved her, too.
To finish it off, he let her know sheâd done nothing wrong and suggested they should go out for ice cream the next day. He encouraged her to wear her new sneakers, too. Miaâs face finally lit up again.
Mia skipped on the way to the ice cream parlor the next day, periodically stomping to make her shoes light up again. She was too tired to walk both ways, though, so Shadow carried her on the way back. Amy squeezed his free hand, silently mouthing that she was proud of him, and he squeezed back.
From then on, every member of the Rose family who wanted light-up sneakers got them for their birthdays.

((Iâve always liked it when artists/writers give Shadamy kids a diminutive version/variation of Mariaâs name. Iâve mentioned zippityzapâs fankid Mia before, but Iâm also fond of galacticghosteâs Marra, and overlordneon has an interesting take on the name with her fankid, Mars.))
((This beautiful art by my buddy @shadowsfascination got me thinking about cacti.))
--
Shadowâs boss liked to throw minor celebrations for workersâ ten-year anniversaries. Cake was served in the breakroom at lunchtime, and the other higher-ups would pitch in to give the worker a small housewarming gift. Shadowâs boss was thoughtful and made sure he got a chocolate cake, his personal favorite.
Shadowâs other coworkers werenât as fond of him. Potted plants were typical for gifts, but they were usually beautiful flowers. For Shadow, though, they bought a small eyesore of a cactus. They sneered that it was as prickly as he was.
Luckily, Shadowâs social ineptitude came in handy. The species was actually called a hedgehog cactus, so he took their words literally and the rudeness soared right over his head, much to his coworkersâ disappointment.
Shadow had been built to protect those around him, and the cactus was no exception. He immediately latched onto it, diligently following the enclosed directions to a tee.
After months of ensuring the cactus had exactly the right amount of sunlight and water, Shadow noticed something alarming: little red nubs had formed among the thorns...and they were getting bigger. The directions hadnât mentioned anything like them. He checked out a book on plant care from the library, but it was mostly focused on flowers, so the section on cacti was very limited; his specific variety didnât even have an entry of its own. Terrified that his beloved cactus might have some kind of disease or fungus, Shadow again took its name literally and decided to ask an expert.
Amy had always wanted to get to know Shadow better, so she visited him right away, happy to help a friend in need. Shadow brought her over to the cactus, and she looked it over.
Amy was no authority on cacti, but sheâd lived on Earth long enough to suspect what was going on. She took out her phone and looked up the name, smiling when her suspicions were confirmed. She pointed to the pictures of the species in bloom, sporting vivid red flowers like the nubs on Shadowâs. She told him he must be taking great care of it if it was already growing buds.
Shadowâs eyes widened. He hadnât considered a cactus was capable of that. She asked why he hadnât searched online for the answer himself, and he shyly admitted that although he was wired for using technology like weapons and vehicles, he still wasnât used to the internet.
Amyâs heart softened at the endearing situation. She asked why heâd sought her out for help; Shadow had closer friends, and if heâd just wanted a plant expert, Silver wouldâve been a better choice. He bluntly told her he thought hedgehogs would be the best at diagnosing a hedgehog cactus, and she was his favorite hedgehog. Amyâs heart fluttered, and she burst out laughing.
Seeing her chance, Amy asked if he wanted to start growing a garden with her. Sheâd always been interested in flowers, and it was obvious he was a natural. Shadow agreed.
The two of them worked together from then on, and their fondness for each other grew as the flowers did. Amy told him how thoughtful his coworkers had been to give him the cactus in the first place. Her faith in the kindness of others made her just as blind to their intentions as he was.
Rouge didnât have the heart to tell them.

((The cactus in question is the Claret Cup Hedgehog Barrel Cactus. I had no idea there was such a thing as a hedgehog cactus until I stumbled into it for this headcanon.))
@shadamyheadcanons showed me this post, and I knew I had to do something with it XD
Ifaketextmessage.com was used in order to create the text chat.
TheModelsResource.Com, which is the 3d library kin to TheSpritersResource.Com, was where I went for the SA2 aspects. The background is actually the original cloud background found in the Hero Garden, and was uploaded by SaviNavi. The Heart Fruit was uploaded by Models124717.
I compiled everything and tinkered with it in the free art program Paint.Net, which I really, really recommend. If you need a plugin pack for it to do some extra stuff BoltBait's is the one I use.
I may very well make a few more phone backgrounds, just for fun.
((Very unserious meta headcanon. Can be seen as a companion to this even sillier post.))

Amy has 14 alternate outfits for the mobile games, including many that match Shadowâs, because he keeps buying them for her. The cast has lockers they check before every update, and she always seems to have a new one, even though some characters still only have one or zero. Theyâre very expensive to commission, so it usually comes down to whoâs the most popular with the fans and designers. Amy is popular and she does have a great design, but itâs obvious to the other characters that someone in line must be particularly fond of her.
Shadow has long felt that Amy deserves to have more nice things, but heâs afraid sheâd feel uncomfortable if someoneâespecially an acquaintance like himâwas spending so much money on her, so heâs been doing so in secret for years. He loves seeing how happy she gets every time she opens her locker to find a cute new outfit, he loves how great she looks in them, he loves when HARDlight has them pose together in their matching getups for publicity shots, and he loves it when the fans point out how cute and right they look next to each other.
Rouge figured it out after Amy got her gothic outfit in Sonic Runners. At first, she thought it was cute and silly, but then the bills kept piling up. He keeps selling his furniture and their electricity gets shut off one month, but Amy looks so happyâ
Rouge was relieved when Sonic Runners got shut down...only for a slew of other mobile games to take its place.
â
((Amyâs goth outfit, for those who havenât seen it:
Itâs recently been brought back for Sonic Rumble. Seems HARDlight is just as attached to it as I am.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why they format their name like this:
Iâve scoured the internet for an answer, but I canât even find where their name came from in the first place. I promise Iâm not being weird with the capital letters on purpose.))
After Shadow was released from his fifty-year prison, he was very hesitant to form close bonds. He latched onto Rouge and Omega like a security blanket after his near-death experience, but the moment he had his memories back, he backed away from everyone else. Having remembered his trauma and immortality, he decided his two friends were more than enough, thank you very much, especially considering one of them was mortal. He knew better than to let himself get close to others and subject himself to more painful losses heâd have to cope with for the rest of his potentially eternal life. Naturally, relationships were out of the question as well, so he let everyone believe he wasnât interested in romance. His lack of interest in Rougeâs flirtation helped.
It was a solid plan on paper.
Amy Rose had other ideas.
She was an expert at bypassing any walls that a person could build. If Amy wanted to be your friend, you only had a few years at most before sheâd find her way in. Even if Shadow hadnât privately harbored a soft spot for her since their hug and the talk aboard the ARK, he still wouldnât have stood a chance. He kept his distance as best he could by leaning on his introversion, a boundary she respected, and he cut back on quality time by never initiating their hangouts. She didnât mind, as she was used to reaching out first anyway. His plan left room for her friendship while maintaining a buffer to keep things under control.
It was working until the fateful day when Amy broke up with Sonic. After an unexpectedly short time, sheâd dried her tears, and the sunshine had returned to her face. Shadow ignored his better judgement and asked her how sheâd recovered so quickly. Amy smiled and explained that although it had hurt at first to learn that she and Sonic wanted different things in life, sheâd always value him as a friend, and she was glad that they were both closer to finding what would make them truly happy.
After that, though, he couldnât help but ask how she could be so content when sheâd wasted so much time on something that ultimately went nowhere.
Amyâs demeanor changed completely. A harsh scowl crossed her face for a moment. Seeing Shadowâs genuine confusion, she took a terse breath and toned it down, though her expression remained stern. She explained that sheâd never feel love was a waste. Her fondness for Sonic had helped shape her into the person sheâd grown into, and those years had brought memories sheâd always treasure. Her feelings for him and their relationship, however brief, were something sheâd never regret.
Shadow stood there for a long time, stunned. Amyâs face softened with concern, and she asked if he was alright. Shadow remained rooted to the spot. Eventually, he muttered a quiet âsorryâ and teleported away.
To most people, the event would have been a sweet, fleeting moment with a friend, but it reverberated in Shadowâs mind. Heâd always taken Amyâs words to heart, and those words had never let him down.
â
Shadow stood at the window on the ARK where Amy had reminded him of everything important to him. The same window where heâd stood with Maria overlooking the planet theyâd failed to reach together, the one he now called home, and both hers and Amyâs words came back to him, forcing him to reexamine his feelings and his past.
Painful as it sometimes was, Shadow couldnât bring himself to regret his love for Maria and Gerald, regardless of how fleeting their time had been. He dreaded the thought of how empty his life would feel without his memories of them and how different heâd be if heâd never made his promise. Rouge and Omega came to mind, too, and a stab of pain lanced through him as he thought of the depths he knew heâd have fallen into without them.
Past that, though, all the light and love Amy had shared with him shone through, and he knew what he had to do.
â
After taking a few days to muster up his courage, Shadow set aside his introversion and sought out Amy first for once. He told her heâd thought about what sheâd said and he understood. He said he was done being afraid of love and he knew heâd regret it if he never confessed to her.
Amyâs eyes went wider than heâd ever seen them, and a light laugh of disbelief escaped her. Shadow only had a few seconds to fear rejection before she hopped forward and pulled him into a tight hug. She eagerly accepted on the condition that theyâd take things slowly in the wake of her recent breakup. A rare smile spread across Shadowâs face as he hugged back and told her he had all the time in the world.
â
Over the years, Shadow did lose the ones who mattered most, at least in a physical sense. Rouge was the first close friend to go. Omega lasted quite a bit longer, continuing on as long as he could until his systems began to fail and any replacement parts broke down.
Amy didnât last as long as Omega did, but she took extremely diligent care of her health to hang on as long as possible. As the end approached, Shadow truthfully let her know he didnât regret their relationship for even a moment. The memoriesâand familyâtheyâd built together would always mean the world to him. Her smile, though tearful, brought him solace for the rest of his days.
â
((Sometimes I see people online casually state that Shadow would never pursue a romantic relationship because heâs immortal and he wouldnât do that to himself. They say it like itâs a given and it just makes sense.
I canât think of a more horrible, toxic outlook for him to have.
Of all the characters in the cast, Shadow and Amy strike me as the truest embodiments of ââTis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.â Shadow might need a reminder of that someday, but who better than Amy to prove it to him?))

Shadow loves exercising with Amy. However, at one point, he noticed that she was exercising with more intensity than she usually did, even to the point where she nearly collapsed at one point. Concerned, he asked her about it, and she said that she was concerned with how much weight sheâd put on. While he thought her desire to be healthy was valid, he assured her that heâd love her no matter what her body type was and that her personality was far more important to him than her looks. Since that point, not only has she had a healthier relationship with exercise, but sheâs even found ways of cooking food that is not only healthy, but very fun and extremely tasty.
â
((Oh, how I wish this werenât canon! Unfortunately, youâre spot on.
This is exactly what she goes through in Sonic Battle. Itâs very uncomfortable. My buddy who runs @shadowxamyweekâ has a lengthy post about Amyâs eating disorder and dangerous exercise habits. As far as Iâm concerned, itâs fully canon. The post is definitely worth reading, but itâs pretty heavy. Anyone whoâs interested should mind the warnings. Amy breaks the fourth wall on Sonic Channel to stop readers from asking about her weight, as sheâs self-conscious about it, and they further fed the flames with the side story art on May 27th, 2022:
Soft serve ice cream is her favorite food. Itâs sad to see this on an otherwise beautiful, badass picture.
Luckily, IDWâs getting it right! Thereâs a preview page for the upcoming Crossworlds arc, and it includes this panel:
Sheâs finally fighting the one who deserves it. My girl is healing and looking super cute while doing so 𼲠And my other friend @shadowsfascinationâ pointed out that sheâs wearing sweatbands here instead of her usual weights, too.
I like to think things are getting better for Amy now because sheâs not getting left behind anymore, which was part of why she was insecure.
(The other reason is because she was hoping Sonic would like her if she were thinner. That...hurts. Thank god heâs never actually said anything negative about her appearance.)
It sure would be nice if she got an apology or some kind of acknowledgement for the neglect, though, and I think Shadow could do that for her. Not that he needs to apologize, but I think heâd be perceptive enough to spot the problem and bold enough to confront the others on how they treated her. Iâd love to see her get a really solid support network for this. She deserves it.
And not only could she cook new meals as you suggested, but Shadow could help with that, too. Iâve always loved the idea of her teaching him how to cook. If he asked her for help, I have no doubt that sheâd step up immediately. Unlike some of the more âhonestâ heroes, I could see him pretending to be bad at it so sheâd âneedâ to stop by more often, and every time she did, heâd know she was getting a proper meal. Love language through subterfuge. Rouge would be proud. He could have an âI donât know much about being a good host, but I know you donât let your guests go hungry. Youâre not allowed to starve in my houseâ mentality. Driven by her compulsion to help people and a desire to finally get to know Shadow better, I believe Amy would decide itâs worth it, at least some of the time.))

So I've seen you address Sonic being shy and you seem to have more doubts than not about it. But if Sonic is not shy with Amy, then why does the Sonic team keep saying he is?
I'm asking this to see what you think not to necessarily disagree with you (you seem to be more on the side that he's not) I personally think the shy allegations are over played and don't work all that well. The only way him being shy could make sense to me is if he's just shy with Amy because of who she is and little to do with feelings he has for her. She's been described as overwhelming to him because of her passion. She's been bold with him about things she wants from him that he's uncomfortable with like marriage. It makes sense to me that he would be awkward and nervous if he had feelings for such a person. Not excusing all his behavior, but for someone who is normally sure of himself it also kinda makes sense that he wouldn't want to deal with it.
I level with you on the idea that he's casual and she's not so thats what I think the shyness comes from not just because he has feelings for her hence why he can be such a flirt with people like Rouge and Knuckles. (I do wonder if the flirting is just a Western thing though. Flynn seems to enjoy writing that stuff!)
An argument I've heard is that he only flirts with other characters because he can never actually want them, like he does it to Rouge just so he can defend himself against her, and he does it to Knuckles just to tease him, so he doesn't flirt with Amy because he really is interested in her and that's why he's shy only with her. If true, if thats exactly how he works for ANY love interest he can EVER HAVE then it seems like all he can do is lead people on until he actually develops feelings for them then... then what? He can't flirt with them anymore? That's weird to me. Off-putting. I don't understand what can be so appealing and cute about that. I hope this is not what they're actually going for because it would make him look... well... pretty pathetic honestly.
I've picked this apart and I can't make sense of it any other way. What do you think?
I gotta be honest with you, I donât think I can give you a good answer. Youâre probably better off asking a s0namy fan. I think trying to pick apart Sonicâs treatment of Amy and looking at her personality to try and justify/explain it runs the risk of putting the blame on her. He was running from her LONG before she mentioned marriage:
[Sonic Adventure]
She didnât mention marriage, draw her hammer, or even try to flirt with him in the slightest, yet he still abandoned her and a helpless Flicky, the kind of animal he usually protects. This is a Sonic problem, not an Amy problem, and I think the fandom has put way too much time and energy into trying to make it her fault. Iâve said everything I need to say about Sonicâs treatment of Amy here.
(I know youâd never blame her yourself, but itâs an approach Iâd rather avoid in a general sense.)
I hadnât thought about the gap between the eastern and western portrayals of sonouge, but I think youâre right. Rouge has an extensive history of flirting with Sonic...
[Sonic Battle, 2003. Yes, she really said that. It makes enough sense in context, but. Like. Rouge. Think of the children! đľâđŤ]
[Sonic Chronicles, 2008]
[Sonic Colors, 2010]
...but he usually doesnât flirt back outside of western media:
[Archie Sonic Universe issue #2, 2009]
[IDW #6, 2018 & #80, 2025]
[Crossworlds, 2025]
[IDW #59, 2023. That last one is Evan Stanley, but literally everything else is Ian Flynn. Thatâs kind of hilarious. This man has been single-handedly steering the sonouge ship since at least 2009. What a champ]
The Japanese dub of Crossworlds completely erased their flirtation:
Sonknux has been following the same pattern as sonouge in American media these days:
[Sonic Frontiers, 2023, Ian again. I canât be the only one who thought this was going somewhere other than a fist bump]
[IDW 2024 Annual. Written by Iasmin Omar Ata rather than Ian, but itâs still IDW]
But although Sega is letting Ian have a field day with Sonic in English, theyâre not really translating it into Japanese to my knowledge. That Frontiers scene that arguably screams sonknux in English is much less emotional in Japanese. I think thatâs a shame because these interactions feel the most like Sonic to me. Fun, free, casual, playful, charming. I love it.
Sonic has had a lot of different writers over the past three decades, some better than others, and his characterization has changed. He also is/was a teenager with all the confusion and inconsistencies that brings, and Sonic Teamâs recently been bargaining on us not knowing the lore, pulling stunts like trying to convince us that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have always accepted Amy as a valued member of the team when they demonstrably havenât. The writers arenât being fully consistent themselves, so donât worry too much about trying to make it make perfect sense. It wonât. Youâll tie yourself in knots if you try. That even goes for the games, let alone that excerpt at the top, which is from a 2005 Disney Adventures magazine. Iâm not saying Sega necessarily isnât aiming for the shyness interpretationâI donât know any better than some Disney employee doesâbut itâs a non-canon external magazine that wasnât even put out by Sega. I take things like that with a pile of salt and stick to shadamy whenever possible.
((Iâve been playing Crossworlds obsessively and there is A TON of great writing for it, but occasionally youâll get something like THIS:
And, uhhhhhh...))

Sonic was gunning for first place during a race with his friends at one point. The only obstacle was Shadow, whoâd been leading the pack in his sports car the whole way through. Sonic ran through an item box and brightened up at his luck. He rolled the bomb heâd gotten like a bowling ball, and it exploded right on target, leaving Shadow charred. Sonic chuckled and raced past him, yelling out, âThat jog your memory, Shadow?â He ignored Shadowâs irritated response.
What he couldnât ignore, however, was the furious shriek from behind them.
âHOW DARE YOU?!â
He turned around, only to immediately take a flying green punching glove to the face. Even as he shook it off, he was hit with a second and then a third, all thrown by a livid pink hedgehog. Amyâs pink cabriolet sideswiped him as she passed, nearly knocking him off his board, and she was wearing a look of pure rage she hadnât aimed at him in years.
Sonic shuddered.
Heâd hoped that would be the end of it, but Amy confronted him after the race. He tried to defend himself by pointing out they lobbed bombs at each other while racing all the time. Amy stopped and stared blankly at him for a second, then completely lost it, demanding to know why he felt it was acceptable to mock Shadowâs mental health. Sonic tried to brush it off as âjust banter,â but Amy wouldnât let it go. She said making fun of Shadow for a medical condition that had caused him a lot of pain and strife crossed a line. Worst of all, she bitterly said that hearing him say that, especially to a hero like Shadow, made her lose respect for him.
It stung.
Sonic tried to brush off the hurt by teasing Amyânot for the first timeâabout the little crush he knew she had on Shadow and asked if that was why she was being so dramatic.
Amy didnât blush or get flustered the way she usually did when Sonic brought it up. Instead, the emotion drained out of her face. She clenched her fists and threatened to take out her hammer and jog his memory for old timeâs sake if he didnât apologize to Shadow.
Fearful yet stubborn, Sonic ran off.
He avoided both Amy and Shadow as best he could, hoping it would blow over soon. Unfortunately, they were still only one race into the Grand Prix, so he couldnât avoid them on the track. Shadow was as fast as ever, but he wouldnât even look Sonicâs way. His face was unreadable apart from a hint of bitterness. Sonic tried to strike up their usual competitive rapport, but Shadow wouldnât say a word.
Amy was worse. Everywhere he went, that cute, pink, terrifying buggy was right on his tail. Heâd start to catch up to Shadow with a shortcut, only for Amy to follow him and knock him off the road with a monster truck. Heâd pick up speed, only for her to whiz past him and drop spikeballs and magnets directly in his path to slow him down. She saved up close-range items like tornadoes, only using them when he was within striking distance. She even slowed down specifically to shred the Blue Star out from under him with a slicer.
By the second lap, Sonic realized she wasnât even trying to win anymore. Instead, she spent two full races slowing him down and fixing him with a disappointed glare, all but forcing him to reflect on his actions.
No one could track him down like Amy could.
Sonic found Shadow shortly before the final race. He swallowed his pride and apologized for the amnesia comment, admitting heâd gone a little too far. Shadow stayed quiet for a while, then crossed his arms and muttered, âdonât mention it.â
Dismissive as Shadow was, it was clear how much it meant to him.
Sonic nodded, told Shadow heâd see him at the finish line, and zipped off, only to nearly run into Amy. She didnât say anything, but she smiled and gave him a hug, which he gratefully returned.
The last race went much more comfortably. Lighthearted banter and items flew like usual, and even though Sonic was edged out of getting a medal, he found he didnât mind too much.
One new pattern did emerge after the tournament, though. Whenever Sonic saw Shadow and Amy in a race together, he noticed Shadow would intercept attacks coming her way from other racers, and he avoided using his own items against her, even if it occasionally cost him a race. Shadow was more subtle about it than Amy had been when she was hunting down Sonic, so he doubted she noticed.
Sonic never said anythingâpartially for Shadowâs sake, but also because he found it charming that two of his strongest friends each thought the other needed protecting.

Sonic: âHey, why donât I mock this traumatized guy with horrifying memories by making fun of his amnesia and brainwashing? đâ
Amy:
Like Frontiers, Crossworlds was written first in English by Ian Flynn and later translated into Japanese. It seems the Japanese localizers are on my side, because they changed it entirely:
Nothing too exciting, but I still think itâs way better.))
Shadow and Amy frequently take part in labor-intensive activities, whether itâs defending against Eggman, helping friends move, or heavy gardening. Shadow regains his vitality quickly because of his biology, but Amy is usually thoroughly exhausted afterward. Once the two of them started dating, he insisted on carrying her to the shower during those times and attending to her while she recovered, delicately scrubbing her clean while she smiled and relaxed.
The first time he did so was at night after a particularly intense workout. He was helping her into her pajamas when she told him how sweet it was that heâd go so far for her, looking far more smitten than he felt the situation warranted.
Shadow had long felt that Amyâs standards were too low. To him, acts of affection like those were basic. Expected.
From then on, he insisted on making it one of a number of ritualsâcombing her quills, giving her backrubs, singing her to sleep, and general pamperingâmuch to Amyâs delight. He helped her put on and take off her shoes while she was pregnant with their first daughter, and when he saw how happy it made her, he kept doing so even after she gave birth. She was more than happy to return the favor in her own ways, too.
Their daughters all took a long time to get married. Amy lightheartedly blamed Shadow for this, saying that having such a romantic, devoted father as a model set their standards too high. He pressed a kiss to her temple and reminded her that it was nothing less than what they deserved.
Rouge saw Amy Rose as just a loud, immature goody-two-shoes for years, and she didnât really enjoy Amyâs company unless she was pushing her buttons or flirting with Sonic to piss her off. The only intriguing factor was how Shadow always stood up for Amy the moment anyone talked badly about her. He never told Rouge about his fated conversation with her alone on the ARK, so Rouge just assumed heâd developed a crush on Amy after she hugged him on Prison Island. Regardless, Shadow always gave Rouge an earful whenever he saw her bothering Amy or trash-talking her, so she decided it wasnât worth it and left her alone when he was around. Anyone Shadow actually liked was worth putting up with in Rougeâs book anyway, annoying or not.
Rouge saw a different side of Amy when Shadow was around, especially because Sonic usually wasnât there. Amy was calmer around Shadow, and Rouge found she had a sense of humor that came out more when she wasnât irritated. More importantly, though, Amy fought for Shadow more passionately than anyone, and she had an unusual, unwavering faith in his heroism. Rouge wasnât sure when that had started, but it was a breath of fresh air next to the distrust she saw toward him from everyone else.
By the time Shadowâs fondness for Amy had turned romantic and the two started dating, Rouge had even started spending time with her one-on-one, taking part in âgirlyâ activities that never interested Shadow or Omega. Rouge was the one who took Amy shopping for a more mature wardrobe once she became an adult, and though she knew theyâd never completely see eye-to-eye on morality, she respected Amy and eventually counted her among the short list of those she called âfriends.â
Old habits die hard, though, and Rouge couldnât help but give her old methods a try. She flirted with Shadow one day to see Amyâs reaction.
Shadow immediately swatted Rouge away and shut her down with none of the indecisiveness Sonic had in his youth. Rouge grumbled, not enjoying the smug grin on Amyâs face as she kissed Shadow on the cheek.
--
((Has anyone else ever noticed that Rouge never teases Amy or tries to make her angry when Shadow is around? The closest she gets is this one generic, dismissive comment in Sonic Free Riders...
...and Shadow immediately changes the subject:
Everyone is at their worst in Sonic Free Riders, and even then, he has no patience for that. Really makes you think.))
Okay yeah, but, I refuse to cosign Shadow skipping out on things like shopping trips because they're 'girly'. Do not do my boy like that. Shadow spent his childhood basically only having a big sister to socialise with, he's probably more at home having tea parties with Mr. Fluffles than with typical masculine activities.
Shadow would love going shopping. The dude has fashion opinions, and if anybody else tries to imply a guy like him shouldn't know that much about coordinating outfits, then obviously they're an insolent moron for casting aspersions on the Ultimate Lifeform's competence.
Shadow wears nothing but shoes and gloves outside of the mobile games. He wouldnât have anything to buy. He obviously doesnât resent girly activities, but that doesnât mean he takes part in them. Let me know when he willingly goes on a shopping trip in canon (Twitter Takeovers obviously donât count), and then weâll talk.
You can have whichever headcanons you like, but it is not acceptable to call anyone who disagrees with you an âinsolent moron.â

Whenever Shadow has a particularly rough day, he wonâtâcanâtâtalk until heâs had time to unwind. Amy can always tell when thatâs the case because itâs one of the few times heâll initiate physical contact. She lets him rest his head in her lap and lightly scratches his quills until heâs fully relaxed. He was mortified the first time he fell asleep like that, but she assured him that she didnât mind and it made her happy that he trusted her so much.
She did keep a book on her coffee table after that, though. She never had the heart to get up and wake him, especially when he purred in his sleep.
Amy frequently latches onto Shadow, but he handles it differently. Whenever she dozes off while leaning on his shoulder or clinging to his arm, she always wakes up later to find heâs successfully carried her to their bed without waking her so he can hold her and make sure she doesnât get a stiff neck. She was embarrassed until he admitted that he found it cute that she never let go even in her sleep and heâd never once felt the urge to push her away.Â
Before she and Shadow got together, sheâd never have believed someone would feel that way about her hugs.
