Her blue-grey eyes ran over the outfit that Sophia had chosen, appreciating it and the work she had to do to get it to fit. It was a little nerve-racking to have been the one to invite the other woman out on a date (though they had yet to establish if it was a âjust friendsâ thing or a âsomething moreâ thing). Bree was good at pretending to be an extrovert but she worked hard to make that the truth rather than allow her natural shyness to take over.
"Iâm glad you didnât have other plans," she confided, the smile on her face was impossible to hide. "I was hoping that weâd get another chance to get to know each other."
There was a small shake of her head as Sophia apologized for not getting her a gift. It was hardly her fault for not realizing she was going to send one in the first place. They only knew each other from a single coffee meeting and then passing one another in the halls. âItâs really okay. I wasnât expecting one in return. Iâm just grateful you agreed to come out with me.â
Feeling bold she stepped closer to gently lay her fingers on Sophiaâs solid middle back. âLetâs go grab a table,â she encouraged before pulling away to walk ahead. She opened the heavy oak door for the taller woman to step through first and then followed to a small table with solid benches. The rainbow-haired woman slid into the roomy bench and gave a warm smile to Sophia.
"Are you hungry? I hear the nachos here are really good. I wouldnât mind sharing a platter."
Okay, so...she wasn't expecting anything. That was a slight relief, right? Still, it didn't do much to assuage the minor guilt problem on Sophia's end. She quickly decided to occupy her mind with other things to avoid thinking about it too much, she was nervous and uncomfortable enough as it was. Not particularly due to anything Bree had done, but at being in the situation to begin with. Specifically, a situation where she had little concrete information to draw upon. While she had a habit of observing some of the people in her classes, learning their habits, personalities, faults and the like...the girl with the colorful hair in the front row had largely escaped her notice. Mostly because she never felt there was a risk she'd wind up collaborating with her on group work, and as such, did not need to familiarize herself with her shortcomings and typical behavior to better anticipate her actions.
Right about now, Sophia was wishing she had.
She couldn't help but tense when she felt the woman's hand on her back, and she silently prayed it wasn't obvious. The dress was made from considerably thinner material than her usual attire, and the sudden motion would likely be felt if Bree was attentive enough. "Yes, let's. I have heard many good things about this place. I hope it lives up to at least some of them."
Hoping the majority of the awkwardness was now behind her, Sophia followed Bree into the club, only to mentally curse herself as she slid into her seat opposite Bree. At the table, not at the bar.
Slag. Date.
Which meant now, she was not only acting without a comfortable level of information about Bree, she was also in rather unfamiliar waters. There had been a bit of a romantic drought following the Library incident that made her the bane of every transit security officer's existence, and she was only just acclimating to it. Now she had to change course again. Well, she didn't have to, but Bree was rather kind to her. And not entirely without her charm. The overwhelming majority of her previous suitors had been male, though that wasn't to say she was willing to rule anything out. Except, maybe, continuing to stare into space while mulling all this information over in her head. A few seconds was probably long enough, and led to her only catching about half of what was said to her.
"I will have to pass. I don't need to eat much anymore, and nachos for dinner is probably unwise. But I could try a few, if you wanted to order some..."

 Bree had hummed and hawed for a long time, trying to decide if she should make the first move. Maybe Sophia wasnât into the same gender. Maybe she only wanted to be friends. Finally she mustered her courage and ordered her a box of chocolate strawberries, having no other idea as to what to get her. She liked them so she could only hope that the other woman did as well.
When Sophia called it was all she could do not to have a mild panic attack. They agreed on a bar to meet at and a time later that day. Then it was time to sit on the edge of her bed and stare at her closet, trying to pick out an outfit. It was so hard to dance the line between âfriend-dateâ and âdate-dateâ. She blew raspberries at the closet that wasnât a magic mirror to give advice. Maybe it was time to try to make a program to do thatâŚ
Eventually she managed to pull together an outfit consisting of a deep purple three-quarter sleeve shirt, the collar wide enough to reveal her collarbones and tops of her shoulders, and a black layered skirt that cut off just above the knees in the front then dropped in the back. To finish everything off she pulled on a pair of black cage heels. After semi-curling her rainbow hair she headed out the door to meet Sophia at the bar.
Rather than take her car and risk having to hunt for parking, she called for a taxi and took that to the bar. After having to re-route due to an accident caused by the Jokerz the car finally pulled up to the bar where she stepped out to meet Sophia with a shy smile.
"Iâm glad you called," she greeted once she was close enough.
At first, Sophia wasn't capable of much beyond offering a nervous smile of her own (and, thankfully, sliding shut the panel on her arm and abandoning the fifty-seventh attempt to call Bree's phone in the past forty five minutes). And trying desperately to avoid eye contact, though she masked it well enough, instead focusing on certain portions of Bree's face. Enough to conceal her own anxiety, or so she hoped. When she finally did respond, it was clear she was starting to regain some of the typical certainty. Or at the very least, that she was capable of making it appear as such.
"I am grateful you thought to offer. It has been some time since I last received such an invitation."
Evidently, though, she'd still continue avoiding the actual question of what Bree's motives were. She'd picked her words carefully, settling on an arrangement she could defend as true no matter what Bree's interpretation was. As for her own interpretation, Sophia preferred not to think about it. Largely because she hadn't yet decided for herself what she was hoping to get out of the evening. Bree's outfit had not gone unnoticed (or unappreciated, even if Sophia would withhold much of the details), but more than anything else, her eyes seemed to linger more on the heels she was wearing--unconsciously shifting her own metallic feet around on the pavement in the process. And afterward hoping that the sound of the alloy scraping against the sidewalk wasn't too noticeable. Or the tinge of color that briefly appeared in her cheeks wasn't too noticeable as she looked the younger woman over. "I also appreciated your gift...thank you. I am sorry that I did not think to present you with one in return."
Largely because she was still horrifically unsure of what to do. She'd tried flowers on the way home, but had faced indecision over whether or not she had agreed to a date in the first place, whether it was too tacky and traditional, how many to buy, what type, and whether or not she was running the risk of aggravating allergies that Bree may or may not have even had. Chocolate shopping involved much of the same internal struggle with ridiculous hypothetical scenarios and overly detail-oriented thinking, including whether or not Bree might have had a peanut allergy that could get triggered by contaminated chocolates. She eventually decided that simply apologizing for not having a gift of her own would be the best (and least stressful) course of action.
"Would you like to go inside? I heard the usual rush is expected to arrive shortly, and I did not think to make reservations. I was not sure if you would prefer a table to ourselves, or just sitting at the bar." Frankly, there wasn't expected to be much of a rush. It was Valentine's Day (or rather, night), true enough, and many of Gotham's businesses were expecting a swell of patrons. But the Broken Shillelagh was not one of them, considering most couples in Gotham were planning to spend the evening somewhere slightly more romantic than a stereotypical Irish pub. Sophia was just using the question as an incredibly over-complicated means of trying to determine whether or not Bree had any interest in her. Because asking outright involved the sort of self confidence that she was sorely lacking right now...

For once, Sophia was not in full control of herself. She'd been a nervous, self-conscious mess for the past several hours, all over an otherwise simple delivery she'd picked up from her apartment building's main office. She hadn't been home to answer the door, but luckily she wasn't out for very long, and the staff had had the good sense to keep the chocolate-covered treats refrigerated until she came to pick them up. Equally fortunate was that she had the presence of mind to put them in the fridge at home, even if the thought only occurred to her about ten minutes into the closest thing to full-blown panic that she could muster. After all, she was getting a gift on Valentine's Day? Her? And it was something that cost actual money, and not just a cheap courtesy gift like those tacky little candy hearts that tasted like they were made from chalk. That was arguably the one detail that threw her the most. Followed closely by the fact that Bree had provided her cell number and an offer to get drinks sometime afterward. Was she..."into" her? Or was it just an offer to hang out, with holiday-appropriate sweets attached as incentive?
Even by the time she was standing outside the Broken Shillelagh, she was still completely unsure of Bree's motives. Largely because she couldn't bring herself to ask her over the phone, once she got around to calling her and taking her up on the offer. She wound up making a last-minute dash to the closest mall just to be safe, picking up a fairly simple black dress to wear in case it was a little more than a casual invite. She had to perform some grade-A amateur work on it once she got home, just to make room for the cables and various bits of machinery sticking out of her.
While she could cover up her work well enough, it would clearly appear altered to any serious observation, but as Sophia didn't like the idea of just trying to squeeze all the extra machinery in underneath (or what it would look like if she tried), she didn't have much of a choice. The end result was a small boost to the cleavage rating, due to the need to trim it down a bit further to accommodate the cables and module embedded in her chest. The back had to undergo much more drastic alteration, as the bulk of her life support system was anchored to her spine, Â It also sported a long split down the sides, allowing the cables there to be attached to her while still remaining outside the dress.She had to fasten a few bits of fabric to the front and back pieces of the dress just to keep it snug against her though, in order to avoid providing a free show to anyone who happened to see her from the side. Luckily, the lower half of the dress didn't need to be altered too much, though it did need to be split from the bottom up a ways, just to make sure it had enough flexibility to fit over the frame on her left leg and the armored plating on her right. Not to mention, allow her to move around without the risk of tearing the dress outright.
She didn't put much more effort or money into the attempt though, largely because she was still trying to carefully limit how much money she was spending, and the dress was far from a planned expense to start with. Or a small one, at least when compared to her usual weekly budget. Which was just one item on a long list of worries causing her to unconsciously fidget outside while she waited for Bree to arrive, usually taking shape in the form of her constantly fiddling with the cellular device she'd embedded in her left arm. It was far less advanced than any of the phones even the high school kids in Gotham were running around with, sporting only a keypad and a small display to show what numbers had been pressed, but it was enough to let her make and receive calls. And at the moment, the only thing that was currently protecting Bree against a call every thirty seconds as she paced around the outside of the bar was what little remained of Sophia's self-control. Which, coincidentally, was fading fast.
Or my favourite misdiagnosis: âItâs all in your head.â
I kind of want to believe that diagnosis in particular is responded to with something along the lines of "Well, my head says this hurts like a sonnovabitch, so how 'bout we get to work on it anyway?"
Drunk decisions at 3 in the morning
//So, lately I've been giving more and more thought to other 'projects' of Sophia's father, Doc Mentley. Namely, a number of combat androids / gynoids he would eventually field in Gotham for initial operational tests, which may or may not clash with Sophia as an additional "test." And after much rum, nicotine, and musical inspiration, I've settled on nine. Nine which will be described in more detail much later after I flesh them out a bit more. But for now, I at least have their names. In numerical order: Jericho, Gauss, Wilhelm, Echo, Vulcan, Devi, Gustav, Richter, and Nadia.
For anyone really curious, a quick search of their names and/or meanings of their names should give you a hint of what each of them will be built around >>

the mona lisa was a commission you shitshill, thatâs how artists make a fucking living. itâs how we get the money to pay for things we need, because we donât want to spend all our time working in a shitty job instead of doing things that are important to us, like working on personal projects or spending time with people we like. by thinking that you deserve free art is basically telling them âyour time and skill isnât worth anything but my personal enjoyment!â and if someone only wanted to be friends with me for free art, i donât want that friendship because that sounds like an awful friend. artists are people with lives and often art is our only source of income and if you really admired us you would understand and support that.

Can we all just take a minute to appreciate here how thereallightsabovearbys' comment on how "this is how you lose friends, etc." is based on a comic where the person's first interaction is literally "i like your art can you draw me [for free]?" Are they that deranged? Like, is paying someone a compliment in their mind the same thing as being a friend? "You just said something nice to somebody, you are now friends and they owe you things." The implications here are pretty awesome. That's using the old definition by the way, "something that inspires awe." Because I'm in awe that someone like this could exist, let alone function in modern society. Someone who seems to believe that friends exist to give you things for free, and that any nice act is deserving of immediate repayment (rather than being undertaken for the sake of not being a total dick). The cultural / historical ignorance is one thing, but this kind of world view is just a wonder in and of itself.
