note: i have not written fanfic in so long, so i am sorry if this sucks. it just hit me that a lot of people headcanon v1 to sound like the s.a.m voice synthesizer and i do love daisy bell sung by that same synthesizer. i use he/they for v1 in this fanfic as well. reader does not speak/is gender neutral. can also be read as either platonic or romantic. enjoy!
It saddened you whenever those memories came back. They were crucial to who you were now, a soul left to wander in the in-between; Limbo. But as much as you tried to remember anything, it was nothing pleasant. Just the bloody, somber remnants of a life that was cut short. You shake your head, looking at the fake digital sky. You weren't sure how technology worked this well; you were born much, much earlier before V1's creation. He had tried to explain it as well as he could but it was hard to grasp such advanced information, like what was a "photon".
You sighed as you continued to watch the clouds on the faux grass, a nagging feeling residing in your heart; lodged deep into the flesh like V1's bullets when they shoot their gun at a husk. You shake your head; you feel those memories come up again. You want it to stop, you tell yourself to stop, but it doesn't. You clutch your head, face contorted in slight pain, tears pricking the corners of your eyes.
"ARE YOU ALRIGHT?" You hear a familiar robotic tone from above, that voice being the much needed clarity to separate you from those memories. You open your eyes to meet V1's singular eye, his camera lens that shined with a amber glow. He's back from one of his regular trips around Hell. You briefly relax for a moment before that same tenseness sinks into you once more. you softly frown and sigh, shaking your head "no" against the faux grass.
"WHAT IS... THE MATTER?" V1 tilted his head at you slightly in curiousity; he isn't exactly equipped to handle... the intricacies human nature provides. At least he is willing to try for your humanly sake. You sit up, V1 moving back to give you space. His elongated head gave you shade from the fake sun, making it easier to gaze up at him. You explain quietly that you keep getting flashbacks of your life when you were alive. It was driving you crazy, you just wanted it to stop. All you wanted was to remember something good from your life then.
And that's when it hit you; V1 should be equipped with a database of human civilization's history, no? Deciding to test this.. theory out, you ask him sheepishly if he could sing a song for you. In hopes of jogging your memories, that is. A faint blush resides on your face. He tilts his head at you once more, although you cannot read exactly how he feels about your daring question. "I CANNOT SING LIKE A HUMAN DOES." He stated. You shake your head, explaining to him it's alright if he can't sing as well as a human.
"WHAT SONG DO I SING?" He asks, not sure what to do. Not like anyone before you asked a machine meant for killing to sing for them. You can't remember the title of the song, only that it had to do with a bicycle... and a carriage. So you tell V1 those two words and they immediately start looking for a song, paragraphs upon paragraphs showing on his camera lense.
You look at his lense in awe; you might have known him for some time now, but it never ceases to amaze just how advanced technology became decades upon decades past your time. Eventually his lens clears up; it seems the song has been found. He starts to sing your request.
"DAISY, DAISY,
GIVE ME YOUR ANSWER, DO."
Your face contorts in an gentle expression of bitterness sadness; the nostalgia hitting you hard in your heart. You turn your head away from V1, not wanting to bother him more than you already feel you are. This melody sounds so familiar, yet you can't put your finger on it.
"I'M HALF CRAZY,
ALL FOR THE LOVE OF YOU."
You close your eyes, trying to get a sense of why you feel this way over a song. You can feel something vague in your mind, something that was locked up deep in your mind. You try to focus on that memory, trying to force it to show itself.
"IT WON'T BE A STYLISH MARRIAGE,
I CAN'T AFFORD A CARRIAGE."
V1 continues to sing that sweet, cursed melody as you struggle to figure out why. it affects you so. But then it hits you. Oh, how it hits you. A young child witnessing on tv the first computer to sing a song: Daisy Bell. You remember swaying to the gentle melody the computer sings, a faint smile on your face as you danced in front of your broken down tv. A small star within the endless night sky that was the war.
"BUT YOU'LL LOOK SWEET UPON THE SEAT
OF A BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO."
V1 finishes and he looks at you blankly, but you could tell he was concerned. You tell him it's alright, you just remembered something that wasn't about the war. You tell him that song he sang was a song from your childhood, how it was the first ever song to be sung by a computer. You smile faintly yet warmly at the rather cute realization; the voice synthesizer the computer uses is just like V1's synthesizer. You tell him that.
"MY VOICE SOUNDS... LIKE THAT?" He asked as he points at himself, sitting down next to you. You nod your head, smiling faintly. You have a faint blush on your face; another idea passes you. You ask him once more if he could sing that song for you once more. You enjoyed it quite so.
He tilts his head once more; you could tell there was slight affection in the tilting of his head, the way he sits next to you. He lets out a beep of approval, singing the melody once more. Except this time, you sing along with them. The memories of the war don't bother you as much anymore.
despite being at the end of one's journey, you'll be with him always.
the purification.
everything this journey has served and brought, its all over.
the connection between puppet and puppeteer severed once again.
blood stained the white walls of the room, a mixture of your companion and the feline's blood.
you sighed; you didn't want things to end this way. but you know it ends this way, it has to.
swallowing your breath like a pill, you step over the mangled corpse of the judge. despite seeing this scene over and over, it was one you never really got past.
you made your way to the batter, who was in front of the switch. hands clammy, anxiety settling in your stomach.
it was always hard, this part.
"well," your words reverberated through out the room. "everything is over."
"all the zones have been purified."
"they have." the being remarked. "and i thank you for your guidance, for making this mission possible."
he flashed a small smile at you, as a small means to repay you for your services.
"of course." you took a short breath. "it's what i was here for.
bringing your hand up to the batter's face, your eyes softened upon looking at him.
he looked down at you with all four eyes, one pair showing adoration and the other showing softness.
you removed your hand from his cheek, moving forward to rest that same hand on the switch instead.
"and now," you turned to meet him, tears welling up in your eyes. "it is time you rest."
taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes and said one more thing.
do you regret what you have done? or do you regret ever getting close?
you found yourself standing among the endless waves of liquid plastic in zone 0, gently nipping at your ankles and feet.
you see a familiar figure in the distance, talking to a familiar feline. he stood out from the colors of the plastic sea and many yellows. from your face blooms an expression of conflict; you are not sure whether to reach out to him or stay silent.
you've done it before; it ended in such a demise. you fell in love with him. by the end of the journey, you realized it was too late to go back on your mistakes; you had fallen for a monster in white clothing.
the memories still lurk in your mind; always waiting for you to slip up, to grasp your consciousness.
the white room was covered in blood stains, that of the batter and of the judge. you stared with blank, dull eyes. the same being who helped you in a zone 0 has now met a unfortunate fate. his lifeless body, old and dried blood caking up on the floor and his fur.
you rubbed your eyes; you wanted this to be an illusion. but alas, this was reality. and reality does not lie to its inhabitants.
your companion knelt down on one knee beside you, caressing your cheek with his bruised, blood stained hand.
"it's all over now." he murmured.
he got up, making his way to the switch.
you continued to sit there, everything crashing down on you just like the batter purifying those spectres, those guardians. his son.
all you could muster was to outstretch your hand in a pathetic means to stop him; he looked back at your terrified state.
his eyes softened. "you knew this would happen, my dear puppeteer." his hand on the switch. "now, it is time to rest."
you opened your eyes. your batter was just gesturing for you to come. perhaps this batter does not remember the events of what transpired.

tired and exhausted, you somehow persuade the batter to go to the amusement park, to your surprise was ran by none other than zacharie. it's just a silly amusement park, what could even happen?
To say the least, you were tired.
Exhausted from the battle against zone one's guardian, all you wished was for some rest.
Your companion, the Batter, thought otherwise.
"Can we please just take a day to relax? We just fought Dedan and we're low on supplies." You whined, hoping your pleas would be heard.
The tall man ignored you, which in Batter language meant no. You sighed. All you wanted was to take, at the most, was a few hours to rest.
You ached everywhere, and having to see the Batter beat Dedan into a fleshy mess is...well. Not a good sight for the slight faint of heart. Your head swam at the memory of that fight.
"Surely, you must be tired too." You hoped this would do the trick; after all, you weren't the only one who was exhausted.
Having to fight all those spectres, fighting Dedan, the constant travelling...it had to catch up to the Batter, non human or not.
"Even if I am tired, it should not interfere with this mission." The Batter gave you a side glance from his second pair of eyes. "You understand what this mission entails."
You huffed in annoyance. You cared for him, even if it was a little hard to show at times. More than your own want for relaxation, you wanted him to rest more than you.
"You need to rest too." Annoyance deeply embedded in your voice, you stopped in your tracks; the Batter taking notice and stopped. "How can you be purifying in top form if you overwork yourself to death?" You sighed, changing your tone to that of a softer, caring tone. "Please just rest for today at least."
Walking up to the man, you held his slightly cold hands in your slightly warm hands, sighing with concern.
You look up at him with concern in your eyes. "Please?"
Slightly shifting from feeling the gentle warmth of your hands, words and eyes, the Batter's intimidating stare shifted into something of a slightly soft gaze.
"Alright. But only for today. Do not ask me this again." He moved his hands from yours, grazing his hand upon his to feel the leftover warmth from your hands.
Despite being a stoic man who hasn't experienced any form of love in so long, this was a.. Welcomed feeling.
Your face lit up with excitement and relief that your hard working puppet would finally get the rest he deserves.
Surprisingly, there was a sign right in front of the both of you. To your left was an amusement park, courtesy of the sign.
Your eyes lit up once again in childlike wonder at the prospect of an amusement park in zone 2.
Holding to the Batter's sleeve, you jumped up and down, turning your head to look at the sign and the Batter. "Can we go, can we go?!?"
The Batter sighed, giving into his fate of fun times. "I don't see why not." He thought your excited self was rather amusing.
It was a refreshing sight to see compared to the numerous spectres and shades of pink.
Pointing to the pedalo recovery point to the Batter, you summon a pedalo while waiting for your partner to show up.
You and the Batter get in, taking a mere few seconds to get to the entrance of the park.
After all, it was only across from where you both were.
Getting out of the pedalo and walking down the steps leading to the park, you both were met with a marine blue hallway.
It was a rather welcome sight compared to the endless lilac plastic waters and various hues of pink and magenta zone 2 had to offer.
Walking down the hall in silence, you couldn't help but smile.
Being able to spend time with your partner in purification at an amusement park? Clearly you were dreaming.
It meant a lot to you that you were able to spend time with him like this, even if it meant it would never happen again.
Reaching the end of the tunnel, you see a pink balloon not too far from where you exited the hall.
Walking up to the pink balloon, you pop it and out came a fortune ticket.
"Hey Batter, we got a fortune ticket!" You wave the ticket in the air, a smile on your face.
"So we do." He promptly stated.
"Do you think we could find anymore balloons in here?" You pondered out loud, resting a finger to your cheek.
"Perhaps. Let's keep moving." The Batter walked in front of you, you following shortly after.
Upon entering the park, you were once met with the marine blue color and four elsen, which all look so frightened, poor dears.
You decided to talk to the elsen whilst your companion examined the signs.
"What a terribly frightening place... At least there are no phantoms to be found here."
"Yes, I see."
"Choosing between three attractions is too difficult for me."
"It is rather hard..."
"Putting water in a room is a really crazy concept."
"I-I suppose so..." It's not water though...
"Perhaps the room that lies beyond this door will cease to exist if I enter...And then I would fall endlessly into an abyss, which in itself does not even exist. What a terribly frightening thought!"
"Uh.. Yeah..."
At this point, you were even more exhausted and just wanted to go to the attractions.
Finally, a glimmer of hope in the shape of a tall stoic man appeared in front of you.
"What attraction would you like to go to? There is a roller coaster, a balloon game, and a water ride." The Batter stated.
"They're all good choices...Why don't you pick?" You said. "After all, this is your day to relax."
"It is yours too." He replied.
"Ah yes...But this is your day too. Whatever you choose to do first I'll like, if that's what you're wondering."
The Batter gave you a nod. "Alright. Let's go to the balloon game first."
"Sounds good!" You gave him a little smile and thumbs up before heading there. Left alone in the marine blue room, his gaze softened at your disappearing figure.
He found his puppeteer quite endearing and by proxy, he felt his heart open up a bit.
When he arrived, he saw you in a state of frustration over the pink balloons, the elsen in the stall simply observing.
"Batter, I can't win at this game." You frowned. "It's so simple yet I keep losing."
"Let me try." The Batter took the rest of the remaining darts from your hands.
Slightly blushing from the hand contact, you wished your companion good luck.
Walking up to the elsen, the elsen spoke in quite the fright due to the Batter's intimidating state.
"W... Welcome." "Play, play, play the Balloon Game! If... If you win, you get the grand prize. But... But if you lose, you might be sad. So... uh... be careful."
The Batter nodded his head as a yes to the elsen's words.
"Okay... Here are the rules. It's easy. When it's your turn, you can choose to pop one, two, or three balloons. When it's my turn, I'll do the same. The one who's left with the last balloon loses the game. Do you understand?" "Okay, let's start. I'll start first."
The elsen popped 1 balloon.
The Batter, raising his hand to throw the darts, three balloon.
The elsen popped another three.
The Batter, one balloon.
Another three balloons for the elsen.
Left with only two balloons left, the Batter threw his last dart at the balloon, leaving the elsen with one balloon.
He had won. "Batter, Batter, you did it! You won!" You jumped up and down, excitement and joy on your face.
"So I did." His lips tilted into a slight smile.
Your eyes widen in amazement at the Batter smiling, but before you could even ask, the elsen interrupted the shared victory between puppet and puppeteer.
"I... I... I've lost..." As much as you won rightfully, you felt a little bad for the guy.
"No... That's impossible... I have been cheating from the start..."
"Excuse me, what?" Your joyous face morphed into one of disbelief. "You-"
"You cheated!!! You bear me much ill will!" The elsen became burnt, taking the form of a Valzong-burnt. The transformation knocking you to the ground, you raised your arms to shield yourself form the burning black goo emanating from the burnt elsen's body.
The Batter with no time to waste, sprung to action. Standing in front of you with Alpha and Omega, faithful steel bat in hand, looked back to you w a protective gaze.
"Puppeteer, what is my commands?" He asked.
Hesitating from the sudden turn of events, you shout your commands. "Batter, use Run with Grace!" "Alpha and Omega, Requisite Bracket, Photographic Blur!"
With the command from his faithful puppeteer, he made quick work of purifying the burnt elsen.
"Adversary purified." He murmured, cleaning off the remaining black goo from his bat.
Alpha and Omega faded, until they were needed once again.
"Are you alright?" The Batter extended his hand for you to pull yourself into. "Just a little shaken, but I'll be alright." You smiled up at your companion.
You looked around and sighed. "Well, not much to do around here anymore." You linked your arm into the Batter's. "Let's go to the water ride!"
Taken aback from the sudden touch, the Batter's second pair of eyes opened slightly.
"Yes, let's." He murmured.
However upon entering the marine blue room again, you noticed that all the elsen were in a panic! What could have caused them to panic so badly?
Before you could speak to an elsen, it screamed.
"Aaaah! Aaaah!" "Spectres in the park!" "Panic!" Oh right. It must have been the balloon popping noises and burnt elsen that made them think there was spectres.
Hesitating on whether or not to try to calm them down, the Batter spoke up.
"Don't. It's not worth trying."
You sighed, knowing he was right. "Thank you."
"Well, water park it is then."
You and your ever stoic companion walked to the right of the room and entered it, seeing an elsen guard a door and a waterway.
Wondering what the elsen had to say, you un-link your arm from the Batter's, a slight frown on his face.
"Th... This is the boss's office. I... cannot let you enter."
"Oh, why is that?" You asked the elsen.
"U... Unless... Maybe you know him personally...? But... without proof, I cannot... I might get in trouble..."
You sighed. "Well, I suppose that makes sense."
Upon turning around to end the conversation, you see the Batter had already gotten the pedalo and was waiting patiently for you to climb aboard.
It was a funny sight, you thought. Seeing the tall Batter slightly cramped in such a small pedalo.
Nonetheless, you get in the pedalo.
Taking your seat behind the tall man, you tapped him on the shoulder as a silent way of telling him you were ready.
"These motors are placed underwater to guide the pedalo." He stated, but you couldn't see said motors.
Not choosing to waste time on looking for motors in the liquid plastic, you told him to go.
Upon pedaling away, you were once again met with lilac skies and the familiar pink walls.
The quiet splashing of the liquid plastic around the pedalo and soft breathing of you and your companion made you a little uncomfortable.
As much as you enjoyed this feeling of being close to the man you started to have feelings for, it was rather stuffy. Too much... going on.
The Batter could tell you were uncomfortable and stopped pedaling. "Are you alright?"
You jolted a bit from him speaking. "I'm fine, I promise." You felt so embarrassed, you just wanted to curl up into a ball. "You can keep going."
Pedaling onward, nothing else was spoken. Only the quiet lull of your breaths and gentle splashing of lilac liquid plastic.
It was only when the Batter took a turn, things took a turn. Literally.
Not remembering what the Batter said about there being motors under the water, the motor made a swift turn upwards.
You would have been knocked off the pedalo into the plastic, if had you not unconsciously wrapped your arms around the Batter's body in an attempt to save yourself.
When the the turn was over, you realized your cheek was met with something a hard, fleshy substance. Opening your eyes, you see a familiar tunic in front of you.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to!" You immediately unwrapped your arms from the man's waist and put them on your lap.
If you were embarrassed then, you were definitely embarrassed now.
"It's...alright." He spoke out.
Silence existed between the two of you until he spoke up again.
"If you want, you can wrap your arms around my body. I don't mind."
Your face grew hot. "O-Oh?" "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure." He said, reassuring you.
Hesitating, you gently wrapped your arms around his body, resting your head on his back. "Is this alright?" You softly asked.
"Yes, it's fine." You smiled, happy you were resting on the back of the man you secretly love. You wanted this moment to last forever.
The Batter smiled slightly to himself, taking in the feeling of your arms wrapped around his body.
You enjoyed the ride so much. Seeing and feeling all the various twists and turns, telling your companion to pop the various balloons around the water ride.
This was a day you'd truly cherish in your heart. But cherished feeling or not, that feeling would come to haunt you once again.
"Um, Batter?" you murmured. You were so quiet that your voice could could rival the quiet splashing of liquid plastic.
"Yes?" Well, it's now or never. "I...Um.." "I just wanted to say um.." You tightened your embrace against the man. "That.. That I love.. You."
You wanted to just let go of the Batter and sink into the liquid plastic, never to be seen. You had just ruined whatever connection you had with the man.
"I..do as well." He murmured. "I share the same sentiment."
Now you really wanted to sink into the liquid plastic.
"You...You do?" Your answer came out as a whisper. "You really mean it?" This time louder.
"Yes, I do." He stated.
Your heart leaped, soared. The stoic being you've grown soft for in return, also liked you the same way.
Clinging to your companion even more, you smiled into his back. "I'm..Glad." Your answer muffled, but still could be heard.
Tuckered out from the tense exchange of confessions, you found yourself drifting off to sleep.
Nearing the end of the ride, the Batter heard the tale-tell sign of you sleeping, your soft snores.
He smiled to himself, his heart warm at how amusing you could be sometimes.
