"Shell Drift" is an exhibit of cast sculpture and masks from Materials 2 class under Salvador Joel Alonday (2nd Term 2016-17). Uniting these plates into a cohesive installation are on-site murals by Elijah Abad and Iñigo Diaz. 

Like drifted shells washed ashore, the discord of plates in varying degrees of success unite as a symphony with the flow of figurative and abstract forms on the gallery wall. "Shell Drift" attests to art as a process of transfer and transformation.

COMMUTED LINES  

“Commute” is an initiative of graduating students and recent graduates of  SFAD’s Painting and Visual Communication Programs, as ways to make sense of commutes that effect transfers, transcendence, or otherwise, delays.   

Richard Bautista, Abbey Batocabe, Emmen Batocabe, Imee Engson, Arthur  Opulencia, Joyce Reyes and Lance Valenzuela test the restive waters of their  own impulses and idiosyncrasies to speak of commutes as vehicles and  readings of social milieus and the potent visuality of mundane encounters.  Similarly, it is an exercise in methods learned through academic routes, or else the rejection of the same routes within processes of learning and unlearning  that eventually define an artist in his or her time. 

These are works that assert ‘location’ as an act, and as an active producer of  signals: the figure of a street bystander cues us to an aborted movement of  someone stopping to reflect on a journey.  A trip on a train pegs time and place into a moment of flux. Locating is also the adventure of the mind, where the  composition of icons are contextualized into intended texts, and the  commutation of meanings become new worlds of meaning. 

Eventually, these commutes try to make sense of energies, and hope to  differentiate between movements that petrify and ones that effect transcend.

The disciplines of painting, visual communications, industrial design and  interior design commence a conversation emanating from basic applications of figure drawing techniques, textures or finishing for furniture and other design  products, and lighting through the design of thematic lamps and abstract forms of paper. Materials are explored through methods of drawing, painting, cutting, weaving, assemblage and the study of chemical reactions among industrial  substances. And overall, themes are convergence points for modes of collaboration providing students with opportunities for creative teamwork, negotiation  and shared lessons in costing and logistics. 

“Opus Modus” is the title given to the sundry of productions guided by SFAD  faculty members Salvador Joel Alonday, Marcelo Alonzo, Jesus Flores, Paolo  Amorsolo Jacob and Mutya Teodoro-Sambile in the conduct of their respective courses.  The exhibit extols ways of  learning through ways of making, and thinking through those very methods.   Read through a recollection of René Magritte’s simple yet cryptic statement of what is— is not a pipe— varied concerns converge into expressions and questions about art educa-tion’s potential and ploy, through materials and methods that relay youthful  play and illumination. 

 Then too, there is room for unexpected turns. A weaving could abort its initial  goal. An idea could collapse into a new inception.  This gallery is after all a laboratory for re-thinking and re-making. Divergent ways commute into new and cohesive interactions.

PWU SFAD: Founding an Education in the Fine Arts

 For every goal, for every desired outcome, the consensus is that the journey starts with a strong foundation. A foundation is about what is basic and preparatory. How well a foundation is laid determines the reliable support for the layers that constitute formation. The pinnacle for that progression is excellence; leadership in one’s practice, where discipline and standards of competence, creativity and ethical values make up the bases for such recognition. 

 A student of fine arts and design complies with various prescriptions of foundation. In PWU SFAD, the route of proficiency towards fulfilling a BFA degree in the programs of Industrial Design, Painting and Visual Communication are the series that make up the Foundation Courses in Techniques, Materials and Visual Perception. Within each basic course, rudiments of skill, critical knowledge and creative application are exercised.  An art project is about levels of preparation: laying ground or primer; establishing a structure or an armature; making decisions in the utilization of design; and familiarization with the most primary of art materials. Most importantly, these initial ventures in art practice are programmed to align with PWU’s core values, guided by "personal integrity and responsible citizenship that fosters community engagement."

 Before the word’s source in Old French (fondation), an etymology of ‘foundation’ tells us of its Latin origins; in words that describe the bottom (fundus) of a hollow or a concavity, such as in certain anatomical parts where an opening leads to a bottom or a base (e.g., the fundus of the uterus, opposite the cervix). Then too, it describes the action of pouring and spreading, or to melt and mould as in the smelting of iron ore (fundere).

 Digging deeper into its roots, how we accept foundation as base should also be reinforced with the nuances of its intent.  In art, the role of foundation is to be the hold before dispersal. Imagination dares to play by learning unknowns as well as unlearning what is known. It is about abiding to collective standards and mores before unleashing individual innovation. It is where the student tests creative freedom and accountability as a future career artist. Foundation is the anchor of the artist’s response and responsibility to society. 

 With this group exhibit, a premiere as it is to represent the first accomplishments of the Foundation Courses for this school year, we assemble a first look at the talent, the conceptual visions, and daring that describe our students at the entry level of PWU SFAD. What bides at the future is not fixed at ascertaining that every participant will go on to professions in the visual arts.  For now, we uphold and appreciate process and what stands to be gained--in terms of tools, rules and decision-making; what is found even at this point of becoming.

The exhibit “Found” opens at the MainSpace of the SFAD Studio Gallery on September 03, 2015 at 6:00pm.  Also opening on is a collateral exhibit “State of the Pre-Thesis” by graduating students of the Painting Program.  Both exhibits will run until September 26, 2015.

The PWU School of FineArts and Design presents "Thesis It!" the 2015 Thesis Exhibit by senior students of the Industrial Design, Painting and Visual Communication Programs of the SFAD from March 30 to April 01, 2015.

 Exhibit Venues: 

CONRADO BENITEZ HALL, Julio Nakpil Wing and  SFAD Studio Gallery, Leon Guinto Wing PWU Taft Avenue Manila

The Exhibit begins on March 30 4:00-8:00pm with a program and awarding of Best Thesis at the Conrado Benitez Hall.  Those invited to the Reception Dinner hosted by the Thesis Students will be served from 5:30 to 8:00pm at the Francisca T. Benitez Hall.

Exhibit hours resume at 10:00am -7:00pm on March 31 and April 01.  March 31 will also be the date of the Thesis Defense by Painting Students from 10:00am to 5:00pm.   The closing event on April 01 will be a program of performances in connection with the exhibit installations at 4:00-7:00pm.

Interior Design Thesis Exhibit on 15 March 2015

NATIONAL ARTS MONTH IS ALSO PWU FOUNDATION MONTH!

 This February, PWU launches a series of activities among its campuses in Manila and Quezon City to highlight its Foundation Month.  The celebration is a showcase of cultural and community projects and consolidates PWU’s network of educational cooperation with various sectors.  

 In PWU Taft Manila, the School of Fine Arts and Design’s program is also an enriching observation of National Arts Month, as it presents three aspects of artistic excellence in the eye of community engagement.  

 From Feb 04 through 18, Wednesdays at 9:00am to 5:00pm are workshop days welcoming the tutelage of CCP Thirteen Artists awardee Edgar Talusan Fernandez, interacting with students from the different SFAD programs on basic and advanced studio arts modules.  SFAD’s Center for Visual Printmaking is the venue for this workshop, and is part of the stream of education advocacies that Mr. Fernandez espouses both as a social realist and current Vice Head of the Committee for Visual Arts, the same committee he headed in 2007-2010 under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

 On February 18, we welcome the Lunar New Year with the commemoration of the late National Artist Victorio C. Edades, Father of Philippine Modernism and recognized as the leading force among artists who debated for a more progressive and innovative art movement against the romanticist and conservative guardians of Philippine art. “Edades: Victorio C. Edades and Modernism in Philippine Art” is a film directed by Nick Deocampo in 2004 and produced by the NCCA through its Committee on Galleries.  The film showing is on Wednesday, February 18 at 2:00 to 4:00pm at the PWU Audio Visual Room, and will open with a talk by the artist who played Edades in the film, no less than the former Dean of the then PWU Institute of Fine Arts and Design, Virgilio Aviado known as a Master Printmaker, foremost member of the Philippine Association of Printmakers and the first Head of the NCCA Committee on Visual Arts. 

 The celebration comes to full bloom on February 20 until March 13, when members of the SFAD Faculty take up the theme of art, education and community with INTERSECT><ED, an exhibit of their works and processes on and with communities at the SFAD Studio Gallery.  The show is an intersection of visual art disciplines and practices from studio arts, industrial arts, interior design and visual communication concerning specific communities.  Aside from artworks, the artist’s immersion in public engagements is shared through interactive processes that aim to initiate educational discourse on the social impact of art and design today.  INTERSECT><ED opens 4:00pm on Friday, February 20 with a walkthrough by the artists.  

 In reflection and appreciation, we enjoin you to celebrate nation and community through art with PWU SFAD and the SFAD Studio Gallery.

"Fact Sheet," for this seventh edition, is a collaborative effort by Artists’ Arrest with Southern Tagalog Exposure, Guni-Guri Collective, UGATLahi Artist Collective and KARAPATAN- Southern Tagalog. It is also a traveling exhibit, having made its caravan through other schools, the commemoration of Human Rights Day in December 2014, and the 28th anniversary of the Mendiola Massacre this January 2015. Its next stop after PWU will be at UP Los Baños.

The exhibit opened on January 27, 2015 5:00 to 8:00pm at the SFAD Studio Gallery. It will run until February 07 and will hold a Discussion on Human Rights and Artists’ Walkthrough on Wednesday, February 04 from 2:00-6:00pm.

A fact sheet is exactly what it states, a concise gathering of key points of information summarized on a single page.  "Fact Sheet" is a serial exhibition project which was started in 2008 by the cultural group Artists’ Arrest, addressing cases of human rights violations that in face of reportage and litigation, reduce the wrenching plight of victims and their families into mere data within case reports persistently documented by human rights advocates.  

 Within the view of art as a humanizing medium, and as an experiential tool able to provoke empathy and awareness in social engagement, Fact Sheet has continued as an art project involving mostly young artists and art students who basically respond to fact sheets about individuals and lives shattered by summary and extra-judicial executions; undue, arbitrary and undocumented arrests; torture; disappearances and kidnappings mostly traced to alleged authorities of government and law.  The series has resulted into artworks that are considerably raw, but emotionally compelling, and definitely fresh by virtue of the immediacy of the issue and the youthful perspectives brought forth by the artists.  

 Fact rendered as fiction through visual means is an exercise in the mindful processing of meanings.  It expands what is simply ‘news’ or ‘incident’ into realms of inquiry.  Where one person’s suffering becomes owned as ‘mine’ or ‘ours,’ and beyond knowing what happened, we also ask what it means to us.  What more should we think of, and what must be done? This too is discourse, although most probably not the dominant one.  Because the cynical retort is that art does nothing.  It does not change society.  True enough, and that is fact.  People do things, and social systems perpetuate actions as culture.  

 PWU SFAD, school to some of the art students and alumni participating in and organizing this exhibit, hosts “Fact Sheet 7: Down The Drain” to place it within the space of discourse and learning for young artists whose works speak to their own youthful peers.  Subtitled as “The Wasted State of Human Rights under the Aquino Regime,” the exhibit voices criticism for the wasted opportunity for reform against military abuses, especially within the counter-insurgency peace and security plan Oplan Bayanihan.  It also points to the way Jennifer Laude was murdered in October 2014 and how provisions of the Visiting Forces Agreement with the US government aggravate the ongoing case. 

 Thus articulated, the exhibit could also clue in on culture's interface with authority, and the tensions that are part of what is contested in precepts of nation, identity and territory.  Inevitably, fact migrates into the personal, for issues and repercussions cannot be alienated from the people who embody these facts as human stories.
