Summary: It's not that Katsuki didn't want kids. He figured he'd have them one day, probably. That he and Izuku would adopt or maybe figure something else out. This is NOT how it was supposed to go. ~~~~~ CHAPTER 23 Kirishima is sprawled across a blanket on his stomach, doing his best to entertain both babies even though Kanami is the only one who’s just starting to be old enough to appreciate his antics. In lawn chairs near them, Ashido and Yaoyorozu are sipping from drinks while they chat with Kyouka.
Katsuki’s monitoring Kaminari by the tabletop grill. They’ve got a whole variety of yakiniku and yakitori going, as well as some shrimp, squid, and thick slices of summer squash with mushrooms and shishito peppers. Across the table is a spread of dipping sauces, steamed rice, and other pickled vegetables.
“See, this one thinks I’m funny,” Kirishima says as he lightly tickles Kanami’s belly. She coos delightedly up at him, her little giggles squeaking out of her in excited bursts.
Next to her, Toshiko’s eyes seem glued to the bright pop of color that is Kirishima’s hair. Her gurgles are beginning to sound more intentional these days – like she’s gearing up to be a real chatterbox, says Kacchan.
Izuku’s sitting near Kirishima, occasionally dangling the odd toy over Toshiko to see if she’ll reach for it yet. It’s fascinating watching the day to day changes she goes through. Sometimes he’ll come home from the agency and it feels like she’s learned a whole slew of new skills in the ten hours he was gone, but Kacchan assures him it’s only ever one or two things.
She just held her head up during tummy time, he’ll say, like that isn’t a monumental milestone, and Izuku will pout about the fact that he ever wanted to have a grown-up job at all. Having responsibilities and making a salary and being outside the house constantly is overrated as hell.
“I’m about to have to stop bringing him over here,” Ashido comments lightly, teasing. She’s watching Kirishima with a fond smile and stirring her drink with a fancy, squiggly sort of straw. “Never seen a guy get hit with baby fever as much as he has.”
“They’re just so cute!” Kirishima cries. He drops his head down to mash his face in the blanket for a second, then reaches out to curl Toshiko into his arm and rolls onto his back, settling the baby gently on his chest. “Especially this one with all her green floof.”
Kaminari throws him a look over his shoulder, eyebrows arched. “Especially?” he repeats skeptically, and Kirishima laughs.
“Don’t worry, bro, Kanami is beautiful. Like an ethereal forest fairy.”
“The fuck does that even mean,” Kacchan mutters. And then, louder: “You saying my kid isn’t beautiful?”
“They are BOTH beautiful and cute and perfect,” Kirishima replies without missing a beat. Continue reading at AO3. Through chapter 23 now posted!
