I come back stronger than a 90‘s trend

“I really was. There are songs from this album I call “from the vault” tracks because in my mind, there’s a metaphorical vault of songs I love. I write a lot of songs for each album and pare it down. These songs didn’t make it on the album because I wanted to have them on the next album, and then the next album was a while different thing, so they get left behind and I always think back about what would’ve happened, or wishing people would hear these, but they belong in that moment. So now that I get to go back and revisit my old work, I’ve dug up those songs. I’ve reached out to artists I love and sad, ‘Would you want to sing this with me?’ Phoebe Bridgers is one of my favorite artists in the world. If she sings it, I will listen to it. I love her voice and I love that she’s a really funny person. I try not to cold call people because it can go badly, but I do send over a long text that I’ve crafted over many days. And I’ll always send the song because I don’t want them to feel pressured creatively if it doesn’t gel. With Phoebe, I sent this song called Nothing New which I wrote at 22. It’s very, very special to me, because its thee first time I was not a shiny new artist anymore. I was on my fourth album—and I think this happens a lot—I’d had a breakthrough and then after that, it’s really hard because you’re not getting the same attention. It’s like the first time you walk into a party, everyone [cheers], and then the next time they’re like, ‘Sup?’ and the third time they’re like, ‘So tomorrow?’ And there you are like, ‘I’m here!’ I was dealing with that in life, so this song is really special. I sent it to Phoebe and said, ‘It would mean the world if you would do it as a duet.’ I wanted a female artist to sing with me because this is a very female artist perspective—we go through that. And her response was ‘I’ve been waiting for this text my entire life.’ So I was like ‘YES!’”
