I recently read an article about a therapy group for depressed people who had all attempted suicide at some point. The breakthrough question for them was, āIf your goal was to be just as miserable as possible, what would you do?ā Most of them listed things like not getting enough sleep, or isolating themselves from everyoneā¦ the list goes on, but the point is, they listed things they already do. But now they saw those ācoping mechanismsā for what they really were: things that were actively making their condition worse.
I read that article at 2:00 AM, asked myself, am I TRYING to be miserable tomorrow? And it was easier than usual to put my phone down and fall asleep. Even my intrusive ālying downā thoughts about meaninglessness and existential dread were easier to suppress when I framed them as things Iād think about to purposefully make myself feel as awful as possible.

Reminder that brown paper and newspaper are cheap and easy to recycle, and you can make them look classy, vintage and/or fun and funky by adding a ribbon or coloured ink stamps!
HOWEVER DO NOT ADD PAINT OR OTHER ART SUPPLIES. This will make them non-recyclable again. BUT, ink is fine - itās removed in the recycling process.

I went through a lot of things after surviving abuse, but one of the things that traumatized me the most was how all the shrinks and counselors treated my anger.
I wish someone had said this to me, instead of making me feel like a monster.
Oof. My therapist always says my anger is a āsecondary emotion.ā This makes it make sense.

1. You are responsible for your own media experience.Ā
2. There is such a thing as a healthy level of avoidance towards topics that make you feel unwell or even (in a real-life clinical definition of the term) trigger you - but you are the one to actively take care of what you view.
3. Avoiding does not mean policing others.
4. You have no right to tell artists to censor themselves - you may criticize what others do, you may dislike it, thatās fine - but actively asking for censorship when you could easily unfollow or block a person just makes you look incompetent in your use of the internet.
5. Do not give people on tumblr or /any/ website the responsibility for your emotional well-being. Because these people do not even know you so no, you have no right to ask them to take care of you.
6. Content creators are not your parents and owe you nothing, not even a breakdown on why their content isnāt problematic. You donāt get to demand a dissertation denouncing any and everything unhealthy in a piece you donāt like. Move on.
7. Tagging is a nicety but not an obligation. You can message people, politely, and ask them to tag things, and many people will, but understand that itās their blog and they arenāt obliged to say yes. Unfollow and block when you need to. Circling back to number 1, you are responsible for curating your own experience.
8. Donāt be a jerk. Remember at the end of the day, there are actual living, breathing people behind each screen name. Donāt say anything you wouldnāt say to someoneās face in real life.Ā
