workin hard every day to get my webcomic up and running á(á)á
rough walk cycle for a short animation i'm doing for my portfolio
This is the GREATEST piece of advice I've EVER gotten! Thank you SO SO SO much I teared up while reading it... Thank you (did I say that already?) THANK YOU!!!
awww angel! i am so happy that i could help! I wish you all the luck in the world and know youâll be a great artist one day. Lots of love. xx
What tips would you have for an artist who can't figure out her own style, compares herself to other people (and therefor loses all motivation to draw) and is quite impatient? That's me by the way. I can't as a student afford to go to a course of some sort (neither would I have the time for that!) and even though I can imagine in my head what I want something to look like, I get frustrated when it doesn't come out as I was wishing. I'm a mess, I know! Could you help me? ;_;
Hi there darling, first off, let me tell you that you are definitely not alone. Weâve all been there, in fact, I still find myself going there from time to time. But itâs okay, eventually there comes a point where the majority of your artwork pleases you. Itâs a growing process and you are always learning.
That being said, there are a few things that you can do to help you tremendously improve your skill level.Â
Draw from Life
This is such a big part of becoming a skilled artist. In order to become comfortable with form (especially the human form!!) you have to take a break from your imagination and try to copy down what you see in front of you. If you can go to Barnes and Noble (or whatever book store you have) and sketch people quickly, youâll find yourself leaping and bounding to be on your way.Â
Copy the Artists you Like
OKAY LISTEN CAREFULLY. I am not telling you to plagiarize. nope. nope. What I am telling you, however, is that itâs okay to try to incorporate someone elseâs style into your own. When you see a piece you like that gives a feeling you want to incorporate into your own work, copy it! Copy it a bunch and then try to draw it in different styles! Do it until you think youâve got it down and are okay. Just donât pass it off as your own work. Thatâs so lame and just plain illegal. If you are really proud of your imitation, you can post it, but make sure you have proper permission. If you donât know who the artist is, do a reverse image search on google to find the source. Contact and then credit the person.Â
Art Class
Now, I know that proper classes are expensive and time-consuming, but there are alternatives! There are a ton of tutorials on YouTube, and art books are great for getting the basics down. There are also a lot of great resources all over the internet! If you follow other artists on social media, itâs really great for inspiration and getting a feel for your style!
Stay Away from Creativity Killers
In our world, itâs really hard not to be constantly barraged by social media. While it is good for getting known and staying connected, itâs really easy to stay on for an unhealthy amount of time. This constant stimulation makes your brain so tired (and quite frankly bored) that it feels impossible to create something good. A lot of the time that is the reason that we get frustrated and canât understand why we arenât getting better. Go outside and relax. When your mind is clear, try to draw, youâll be surprised what you can come up with.
Try New Things
Sometimes the thing that is the most frustrating, though, is because we get stuck in one âstyleâ. Try new ways of drawing to try to achieve the picture you see in your mind. Try drawing the same thing in a bunch of different styles, you may find a style that really works for you!
Frustration is Okay
Everyone feels that way, trust me, and itâs easy to get in a funk. Sometimes you have to just take a break from drawing. Inspiration often comes when you donât expect it. Listen to some good music, read a nice book, soon youâll have so many ideas that one of them is bound to be a masterpiece!
Hope this helps dear! If you want any specific advice you can message me off of anon and Iâll be happy to help however I can!Â
