Semi-Imaginary Place

For the last year I've been experimenting with removing dyes from gems. Had quite a bit of success using methy acetate as a solvent for blue dyed quartz. Melted a lot of plastic with acetone. etc. Please use caution, organic solvents are all toxic and pretty dangerous.

Anyways this weekend I'm experimenting with dyed pearls. This is leagues harder since quarts is pretty inert so it's difficult to chemically damage them. Pearls are the opposite as fancy lumps of calcium carbonate they are extremely reactive, easily damaged, and will start dissolving in any pH lower than 7.

Someone gave me a bag of free beads which included these extremely dyed pearls which I was hoping to bring closer to their natural color. I think these are natural given their amorphous shape and they lack some of the signs of fake pearls like peeling around the holes. I have them soaking in mostly water with some dish soap right now. Methyl acetate worked last time to remove dye from dyed quartz. Don't have that anymore but I do have acetone which should work as an solvent on synthetic dyes. But everything I've read says to avoid most chemicals with pearls since they're delicate. Since they're fancy calcium carbonate anything low pH is out. What would be the best way to remove the dye if possible?

Here's the pearl jar after about 5min. You can see the gree dye is already coming out. The soap water solution is light blue.

it has been like 4 hours, I think the dish soap is working, the water mix is turning greenish. Instead of getting rid of the dye it just might manage to redye the pink pearls light green.

12 hours later after the solution has been changed out. I don't think the pink has lessened just the green. Some of the pink pearls are now showing brown/orange patches, I don't know if this is what the dye was hiding or they are getting redyed by the orange/brown pearls (3 of these).

Sunlight and hydrogen peroxide could work or damage them so I went digging. Sunlight dulls iridescence but at least doesn't seem to affect structural integrity and a lot of the most dyed areas are on the back so if the soap fails I might turns them on their backs and stick them in the sun for a day. Hydrogen peroxide is used for commercial bleaching but without a formula and what are probably proprietary methods I'm not going to try it.

Getting photos with consistent lighting is hard but here you can see a brown spot in the 2 above photos (taken 10 seconds apart). So detective time. The main dye the soap was picking up was the green like the solution was green when I changed it today. The green pearls are turning yellowish as the dye is washing off so idk if a yellow and blue dye were used and the yellow is holding out better or they were yellow to begin with. There are only 3 orange/brown pearls in the jar so it's unlikely they are dying everything else. I'm looking over the old photos and I think the orange/brown patches were always there just less noticible before.

Hour 16: yeah the green pearls are definitely turning a yellow/orange/brown color. My current though is that all the pearls had some brown, that's why the manufacturers dyed them to begin with. Interestingly removing the dye is restoring a lot of blue overtones and iridescence to the pink pearls. The solution is now a cloudy teal I don't know why, a dead fly got in but that shouldn't have affected too much.

Hour 17: someone on the pearl sub said dish soap can damage pearls so between that and the turbidity I changed out the water with only a tiny bit of soap.

Hour 26: ok water went cloudy again and I don't know why so out they come. So in the end I don't think this did much. The greens are less vibrant and there's overall more color variation now. Hmm there does seem to be some opaqueing/dulling/clouding on the pearls which came off after rubbing with my shirt.

So in the end I'm still not sure what are rappa's delusions, what's reca's editing, and what actually happened, and i like that ambiguity. That what we see in the movie (game) is through a specific lens or the director (devs).

I think robin has found her answer and it directly confronta sunday's talks of "self worth"/ambitions/dreams as the source of sufferring. Robin refutes that that dreams are a beacon to inspire and give people courage to be themselves.

Robin said she attended paperfold academy many years ago which makes me wonder how old robin and sunday are based on their art as kids the age gap does seem big like less than 3 years. Assuming paperfold student age is like irl uni age 18-22, many years ago I'd assume meant robin is like 30+. And on one hand that does make sense she's really well known and how long does it take to get an intergalactic reputation. And I don't care what sort of nepo baby prodigy they are, who elects a 20-something as your planet's leader. On the other hand both robin and sunday "feel" young in that both their arcs are young adult narratives about relationships with the older generation (getting used by them (wood), overcoming them, negotiating with them (ex: oti)). They feel inexperienced narratively, not knowing about the stellaron, dreamflux reef, or the truth of the watchmaker. Also they're both geniuses so who's to say they didn't go to university at 14 and graduate after 2 years. Also hopher wood pulling strings to position them in places benefitial to him. There's also how irl idol culture whoch robin and her musical style are inspired by focus on youth and targeting teenagers with idols under 30 but this is all the scifi space future so who knows.

I'd say letting rappa and trailblazer run the band festival is a bad idea but i've been doing all the sidequets so they actually have a managing resume... and rappa's a genius or something

More sunday aventurine parallels is how important faith is to their lives but in very different ways. Aventurine is very private, his faith is extremely personal what with the avgin genocide and it acts as a tie to his family. Sunday has the appearence of a religious person and is a deeply religious person but not in the way anyone would assume. It's not a cherished cultural heritiage like for aventurine but both a political framework and something for him to build a new and improved version from. Both planned for pending to not have an after. Sunday trapping the whole system in a dream and being eternally alone. Aventurine maybe actually dying maybe faking his death and slipping the ipc leash or fooling sunday. I've been watching the YouTube videos and ave tried soooo hard to get fired but the stonehearts gave him a raise instead. Another parallel are that halovians and avgins are both known for being beautiful and charismatic but one is viewed positively and the other negatively

I'm still turning around the religion question in my head. Religions has been a central part of both sunday and aventurine's lives. Ena's eye has the same volor and pattern as aventurine's. Xipe inverts the color ordering but has the same colors in the third eye headbands. I wonder if order became one of harmony's faces. And then there gaiathra triclops whose icon is three eyes. There's a theme of 3s among these dieties. I also find ot interesting that gaiathra triclops was localized but fenge was transliterated. In the og script gaiathra triclops is like literally 3 eyed earth goddess.

It just all seems tacked on together. When a longer stay in penacony and all these events happening during the charmony festival would make more sense. (Idk about the main quests)

Of course Jade is interested in an event where desires gather. I might be reading too much into this but my reading of the scene is aventurine being reluctant to get involved in something that is obviously going to blow up and jade ordering him to join. Once is coincidence, twice is a connection, robin and boothill and together in scenes a lot more than i expected. Overall the changes are reasonable without impinging on the themes and core of the series. Cast got no and the rest mixed together in composite. A problem I do have is that tv murderbot is inexpressive where as book murderbot has such an extremely expressive face that everyone else knows it's emotions before it does. Or how tv murderbot often checks people's expressions which og murderbot would never do since it is primarily watches humans through external cameras and also can't read emotions that well. It is a key characteristic to contrast murderbot's complete ineptitude with emotions including eecognizing it's own. Also they made the sensitive emotional one Ratthi, into a dude bro who want to show off and shoot big guns. That is the opposite of his character. The point of Ratthi's character is to have a man as far removed from toxic masculinity as possible.

Because we are no longer stuck in muderbot's pov who does not care about anything outside security and tv shows in the book we only get like 1 line about the polycule drama. Which would have also been funny in the show. But the expanded secondary cast means we get more worldbuilding including that preservation finances it's lifestyle partly though debt and partly through selling the result of scientific expeditions. Which is The Perfect addition. Book preservation seems too good to be true though this could be because of murderbot's limited experiences and knowledge. If you think about it Preservation is only 3 generations old, they talk about their grandparents. This is a new civilization likely about 50 years old that is spasely populated and thus has less resource demands than most planets.

Also this show has a severe lack of sanitation measures. Like yikes that is all going to get infected. You know there's reasons all the surgeons and nurses get suited up or the operating room.

half of the scions have gone swimming in the aetherial sea already. gotten maimed too! uh isn't krile the most sesitive to hydaelyn she'd have the best chance at contact. this doesn't fit with krile's established role and trajectory. Like this entire expansion has had a focus on Krile's relationship with Hydaelyn, she's always been in the lead when it comes to Hydaelyn stuff until now.

don't get me started on the buddhist subtext it's what's been spinning in my mental microwave all week. buddhism is inherently existential so pretty much any work that touches on existentialism coincidentally or not touches on buddhism. given that ffxiv has a japanese dev team and buddhism is highly influential on japanese culture it could be partly from that. it probably isn't that they were intentionally writing a buddhist story so much as "that buddhist values of karma and rebirth are culturally important" (saba sabaton).

the upcoming hydaeyln fight feels counterproductive plot wise. Testing us to see if we're worthy of fighting meteion seems like a waste of time and energy. kind of a let down really. we're just wasting her strength the entire game for several expansions now has established that hydaelyn is weakening.

I liked it better when shb was implying that hydaelyn and zodiark were equally "bad" and this was all basically a gang turf war were caught in the middle of, that time the devs teased the idea of hydaelyn tempering before backing down on it.

So sundering was for 2 reasons: making zodiark easier to seal, and making people more able to use dynamis. lit "god works in mysterious ways", "he sets us tests of faith", getting big christian level delulu vibes. “To ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom─it is indolence.” all so that suffering she could gatcha gamba reroll stats until that one person who could wield enough dynamis to defeat meteion. this was a terrible plan.

the arr devs totally intended for the giant crystal to be hydaelyn. but ha. ha. she was just hiding on the other side. well at least it's not as bad as the earlier "oh you just misunderstood what she said". these sorts of blatant changes really annoy me it's one of my most hated story aspects of ffxiv.

uh is the star going to be ok is we take the mothercrystal to power the space ship. didnt they almost kill the planet in ff7 by doing this. Just from genre conventions, taking the mothercrystal feels like it's going to kill the planet. Weird take xiv but ok

Hydaelyn: Though I knew failure after failure, by recalling thy tales─and my promise to thee─I found the strength to carry on.

kubera did this plot point first, where the mc timetravels into the past and the hope of seeing the mc again is some ancient being's reason for living. yeah, really, instead of using up the rest of her lifeforce to fight us, she should have done something productive with it.

I was really expecting the writers to do more with Venat being a former Azem. With what is currently established, it would make more sense for her to have been Elidibus. The white robe mechanic would have been much cleaner too just for Elidibus instead of Elidibus and those who refused the call. And Themis being new and losing himself would have made more sense.

G'raha Tia: If dynamis is ruled by emotion, perhaps prayer has more tangible results than I suspected─albeit ones that are not always obvious to us.

Primal summoning was one of the main themes of ARR. The story of FFXIV all the way through SB was all about how anything can be a primal with some prayer and aether. It's weird then that Etheirys is supposedly the aether planet not a dynamis planet. With how easy primals are to create you'd expect there to be lot of dynamis and little aether according to the mechanics established in EW. Of course this is another product of changing writers and visions, the writers of the earlier expansions had different ideas about the mechanics of the setting or maybe didn't think it through at all. Have I mentioned dynamis' mechanics remind me a lot of the Fade from Dragon Age where everything is memory and emotion, objective reality does not exist only what people believe to be true.

Sharlayan is abandoning evacuation?? Why?? even if we take the ship, they still have the Garlemald teleporter/elevator thing. They don't need to completely abandon their plans. Having a backup is always a good idea. Hydaelyn is shit at planning, changing her mind after hundreds of years of prep. Either you split the resources and preparations or you go all in and stay the course. If she had planned on fighting Meteion from the beginning the PC would be way better equipped and she might not be dead. Going all in on one plan and then last minute pivoting to go all in on a different plan is so stupid.

Now that I've had time to think, even if a subset of the population boards the moon arc, after the star is destroyed why wouldn't meteion attack the ship? Beyond Etheirys is less aether and less protection from the dymanis vibes attacks.

I need to summarize all the hydaelyn stuff and like sift through it analyzing the effects of adding stuff in ew to existing material. Hydaelyn has always known Meteion's location and spent the last 12000 years sitting on her thumbs and getting weaker. The point that bothers me is that Endwalker highlights the tragedy of Sundering and all the pain and death it has caused but offers no real reason why Hydaelyn let the state of things continue. “To ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom─it is indolence.” Krile says Hydaelyn "has been waiting... .... For mankind's answer to Hermes's question" which is ridiculous on several levels. How are people so suppose to answer a question they don't know is being asked. That answer also just doesn't seem worth it. Who cares about some abstract ideological battle when you're playing with the lives of actual people you could help. Maybe this is just Krile rationalizing for Hydaelyn since she is a believer, it really reminds me of delusional Christians when they say stuff like "god works in mysterious ways" or "god is testing us" when something horrible happens as justification for why their god would let such awful things happen if he's so good and powerful, to shut down debate and critical thinking of doctrine. big vibes of "i could fix everything but want you to do the work". It's just unnecessary suffering. And speaking of unnecessary, is the fight against Hydaelyn. That was such a waste of everyone's time and energy. Was the Zodiark fight not a good enough test of strength, I'm not a powerleveler but she can't have been much stronger given how she died because of the fight. If she didn't fight us she could have lived a little longer to help even if just to advise. And if she was going to die anyways she could have done something actually useful with her reserves, like idk cool energy sword.

The entire p4 team really does feel like a bunch of repressed queer egg teens in small town 2010. Unlike most Persona fans I'm not excited about P4 Revival. I will probably like P4 better as a period piece than whatever p4r ends up being. I didn't even like the changes golden made because it just made yosuke more bigoted (and tacked on marie).

One of my main problems with p4 is the thematic dissonance. (P5 has it worse but that's another post). P4's whole theme is truth so you'd expect the cast to learn "truths" about themselves and uncover something new. But repeatedly with each character what they "learn" brings them back to exactly where they were. Which isn't bad on it's own except that it happens to every character and more importantly that many of them struggle with the conventions of society only for their revelation to be that they are happy conforming to social expectations. The girls especially confront their place in the patriarchy and you the player actively shove them back into their societally conventional roles. In P4 very conveniently and unrealistically "being youself" ends up being exactly what people expect of you.

Yukiko starts out uncertain of her family and the entire town's expectation to suceed the Amagi Inn. And her story is about finding her own reasons to do so. Which again is fine but all the girl's stories are like this.

Chie struggles with gender norms and how others see her as too masculine. Her "truth" is to accept all parts of her which conveniently is to stop suppressing her feminine side and be more feminine. Her entire social link is you pressuring her into conventional femininity.

Rise was about struggling with continuing her idol career or retiring to help at the tofu shop. She also ends up back where she was (idol) but this story is less sociopolitically charged.

Naoto's is the one I have the most problems with but let's start with what was intended. What the writers intended to do was tell a story criticizing workplace misogyny, that a woman has to act less feminine to be respected at the workplace. Which is a great story to tell but they fumbled it so hard. Naoto's "truth" that she can be a woman and a detective really falls flat. Instead of anything revolutionary like Naoto realizing they are comfortable being seen as a man. You the player pressure them back into conventional femininity by showing them how they can be a real girl. It's like Chie's story problems but 10 times worse.

Kanji gets hit with this somewhat. He struggles with the gendered perceptions others have of him that his hobbies and interests are too feminine. And the social link itself is pretty good Kanji keeps going with his hobbies and it's as stressed by people not seeing him as "a real man". And then things devolve into Yosuke homophobic jokes. Side note in Japan gayness isn't as stereotyped as feminine like it is in the West, so the whole okama dramatic voice and focus on sweaty muscles and masculinity is in line with 2008 Japanese stereotypes of gay men. Kanji's whole arc is shock value to incite audience (and writer) fears of gay men. All so the writer's can pull a gotcha on the audience since Kanji's story is actually about gender.

Speaking of Yosuke, during early game he plays the role of detective and "smart man" to move the plot along before Naoto joins. The early game also highlights his kindness and will to help others. But as more characters join and there's less time to show his compassion and less narrative need for him to put the plot pieces together his narrative role devolves to comic relief characters. And p4 thinks fat people and gay people and women older than 30 existing is funny.

English localization ruined Teddie. Not that he was great before but the original script made it clear that he's very childlike and ignorant and spends most of his dialogue parroting what he has heard on tv because he doesn't know how to interact with humans. JP Teddie doesn't understand what he is saying and why it is inappropriate or offensive when the tv show characters liked it. Eng Teddie is just a disgusting sex pest.

P4 at almost every turn ignores the more interesting options in favor of returning to the status quo of putting every character struggling with their societal role back in their "proper" places. Their "revelations of truth" do nothing except having accept where they already are. Remember that these are fictional characters deliberately written. The writers are a bunch of social conservatives who refuse to imagine anyone stepping out of their place (which is why trying to write "rebellion" in p5 crashes even harder if they already struggle with "truth" in p4). The p4 writers struggle to imagine a "truth" that is actually revelational and a "truth" that is different from what society expects of you.

So let's talk about wasted potential. Intentional or not (and it is not), struggling against society's assigned role for you is a queer theme with a queer reading. With the girls it's pretty simple, let them be their own unique true selves instead of shoving them back into traditional femininity. The writers could have written Chie into embracing her masculine side but didn't. They could have written Yukiko discovering herself and breaking from her obedient daughter image. They were too cowardly to make them lesbians despite the obvious deep connection between them. I mean butches exist, as is the option to be nonbinary. And wouldn't that be an interesting twist on the schoolgirl lesbians who grow out of it to get "real" (read straight) relationships, if these schoolgirl lesbians didn't. They could have made Naoto a boy and wouldn't that actually be a truth worth confronting but no they just made them a confused girl you have to push back to femininity.

Yosuke already deeply struggles with his desperation to be accepted. He jumps to conform, it makes sense that he'd suppress a socially deviant attraction to men and would react to his own discomforts over sexuality by projecting onto and then repeatedly attatcking Kanji.
