But if you were reading the book and paying attention -- before or after the scene itself -- you'd understand the whipping serves both to bring Amadeo out of his melancholy (which he needed! and Marius knew the dangers of!) as well as give him the attention he was seeking from Marius.

Marius regularly encourages Amadeo to be his own person, find independence, and to form his own identity. He takes measures to ensure Amadeo doesn't break his own mind with his amnesia and does his best to assist in reconnecting him with his roots while still encouraging him to live fully.

Marius chooses a stubborn amnesiac because he sees himself and his traumas in him. He wants "the one who won't do what you tell him to do" because that was Marius with the Druids, he was the stubborn one although he did end up "giving in" by drinking their beer and allowing upkeep of himself. Amadeo does not, which I believe Marius admires him for, and which is also part of why he is so heavily disappointed when Armand comes into existence.
