We are excited to announce @smangotikhumalo  as our featured artist for December @sketchin.dbn session. Smangaliso will be showcasing and discussing his work. “The genesis of my work was to question that ubiquitous colonial conquest. There have been many dialogues pertaining to the polemical issues around this subject of colonialism. My interest was mainly to revisit these issues that have reached impasse status. I felt that, certainly there is that nominal change within our sociopolitical and socioeconomic milieu in relation to the black subject; that Di Lampedusa principal that “everything must change in order that nothing changes” is in full formation in contemporary society and post-apartheid South Africa. My body of work focuses on all these issues of intersectionality. Having engaged with these issues of marginalization as a black man residing in post apartheid South Africa my work endeavors to bring about visual cues that depict pressure and tension. The conceptual execution of the photographs that were captured centre around the subject of subjugation. I chose photography because in its intrinsic form is a medium that captures, documents and reveals certain truths and it provides a record of social and political situations with the aim of conveying a pertinent underlying message and that for me was the reason why it resonates with me.” Smangaliso Khumalo We would love for you to join us and have an opportunity to engage and sketch Smangaliso as our live model! I'm still in awe of the response that @sketchin.dbn is getting. An idea that came from years of frustrations that us visual artists have limited spaces in our city where we can hang, feel safe to share ideas and grow. Thank you guys, we are growing because of you and that means so much to me. 💐
