Gull Rock Lighthouse (1867) ARLHS USA-361 / USCG 7-15165 (Active) Focal plane 50 ft (15 m) (250 mm lens) Two white flashes every 5 seconds. Located on Gull Rock, a small island on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 46 ft (14 m) Square brick tower with cast iron lantern and gallery attached church style to a two story brick keepers dwelling. A brick privy also survives at this site. The lighthouse is painted white, the lantern and gallery are painted black and the keeper's house roof is painted red. Gull Rock Lighthouse was abandoned for many years and the interior of the structure suffered severe deterioration and extensive water damage during that time. The lighthouse was also endangered by erosion until restoration efforts began in 2008. This is one of the most isolated lighthouses on the Great Lakes and is widely considered to be one of the loneliest places to be a lighthouse keeper. Gull Rock is so small that during storms waves wash over the entire island, leaving only the lighthouse and tower exposed. Accessible only by boat, it is extremely dangerous to land on the island. Owned by the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy and Gull Rock Lightkeepers, the site and tower are closed. Located on Gull Rock, a small island between Manitou Island and (Keweenaw Point) the eastern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor Michigan, USA. Manitou Island Light Station (1862) ARLHS USA-470 / USCG 7-15170 (Station established 1849) (Active) Focal plane 81 ft (25 m) White flash every 10 seconds. Located on Manitou Island on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 42.5 ft (13 m) Square pyramidal steel skeletal tower attached to a central cast iron cylinder with lantern and gallery. The tower is attached to a two story wood keepers dwelling. The tower is painted red, the watch room and lower gallery are painted white, the lantern and upper gallery are painted red. The two story keeper's house is painted white. The fog signal building (1930) and several support buildings also survive at this site. This lighthouse is a sibling of Whitefish Point Lighthouse and these are the only two lighthouses of this design that still survive. Owned and managed by the Keweenaw Land Trust / Manitou Island Light Station Preserve. This is one of the most isolated lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Accessible only by boat, the site is open and the tower is closed. The lighthouse is also in danger of beach erosion. Located on the eastern tip of Manitou Island approximately 5 mi (8 km) east of Keweenaw Point near Copper Harbor Michigan, USA. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (Bete Grise) Mendota Lighthouse (1895) ARLHS USA-489 / USCG 7-15151 (Station established 1869) (Active) Privately maintained. Focal plane 44 ft (13 m) White light flashing every 20 seconds. Located in Bete Grise Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 37 ft (11 m) Square brick tower with lantern and gallery attached to a two story brick keepers dwelling. The lighthouse is painted a yellow cream with green trim. The lantern is painted black and the lantern roof is painted red. Also known as the Bete Grise Lighthouse, all of the original station buildings remain. The original barn, boathouse (1903) oil house (1895) and privy (1895) all survive at this site. The original 4th order Fresnel lens has been restored and is on display in the lantern room. Mendota lighthouse is privately owned and there is no public access, the site and tower are closed. The best view of the lighthouse is from across the channel at the end of Bete Grise Road. Located on the south side of the Mendota Canal, the entrance to Lac La Belle near Bete Grise Michigan, USA. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jacobsville Lighthouse (1870) ARLHS USA-658 (Station established 1856) (Inactive since 1920) Located in Jacobsville Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 45 ft (13.5 m) Round brick tower with lantern and gallery attached to a one and a half story brick keepers dwelling. The tower is painted white, the lantern and gallery are painted red. The keeper's house is unpainted red brick and the roof is painted red. Also known as the Portage River Lighthouse, the oil house and barn which has been converted into a garage also survive at this site. The lighthouse was maintained as a private residence for many years before opening as a bed and breakfast inn which has since closed. The lighthouse remains privately owned, the site and tower are currently closed, however you can still view the lighthouse from the grounds outside of the fenced area. Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse (1920) ARLHS USA-418 / USCG 7-14765 (Station established 1868) (Active) Focal plane 68 ft (21 m) White light occulting every 4 seconds. Located near Chassell Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 62 ft (19 m) Three story octogonal steel tower with lantern and gallery rising from a two story concrete base which incorporates the machine room and fog signal. The tower is painted white, the lantern and gallery are painted black and the lantern roof is painted red.  Also known as the Portage River Entry Lighthouse, this is a well preserved example of the architecture and engineering methods used to construct lighthouses on the Great Lakes in the early twentieth century. The keeper's house is located onshore at the former site of the old Portage River Rear Range Lighthouse. An additional two keeper houses and support buildings still survive at this site which is now privately owned. Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse is also now privately owned, however the Coast Guard still maintains the light. The site is open and the tower is closed. The lighthouse is accessible by walking the breakwater only when weather and conditions permit. There are good views from the lighthouse onshore at White City Park. Located at the end of the breakwater on the east side of the Portage River (Keweenaw Waterway) in Jacobsville near Chassell Michigan, USA. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sand Point Lighthouse (1878) ARLHS USA-725 (Inactive since 1922) Located in Baraga Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 36 ft (11m) Square brick tower with lantern and gallery rising from a one and a half story brick keepers dwelling. The lighthouse is unpainted red brick with white trim. The lantern and gallery are painted white. Several station buildings still survive at this site. The active light is located nearby on a steel skeletal tower. The lighthouse marks the entrance into L'Anse Bay and Baraga Harbor from Keweenaw Bay on Lake Superior. In 1898 the lighthouse was relocated inland 200 ft (60 m) due to beach erosion. The lighthouse had been heavily modified as a private residence over the years but has since been restored to its original appearance. Now owned and maintained by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, the grounds are open year round and the tower is closed. Located off US-41 on Lighthouse Road at the Ojibwa Campground and Recreation Area in Baraga Michigan, USA. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Big Bay Point Lighthouse (1896) ARLHS USA-053 / USCG 7-14705 (Active) Focal plane 89 ft (27 m) Flashing white every 6 seconds. Located in Big Bay Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 65 ft (20 m) Square brick tower with octagonal lantern and gallery attached church-style to a two story brick keepers duplex. The lighthouse is unpainted red brick, the watch room is painted white, the gallery painted black and the lantern roof painted red. The brick fog signal building, brick oil house and privy also survive at this site. The original 3rd order Fresnel lens is on display in the lighthouse. Big Bay Point Lighthouse is privately owned and operated as a bed and breakfast year round. The lighthouse and grounds are only open to guests of the bed and breakfast. The grounds located east of the lighthouse are open to visitors year round. Public tours are available from June to September. Today it is the only active lighthouse operating as a bed and breakfast. Presque Isle Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse (1941) ARLHS USA-1111 / USCG 7-14670 (Active) Focal plane 56 ft (17 m) LED optic flashing red every 4 seconds. Located in Marquette Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 40 ft (12 m) Three story cylindrical steel tower with gallery and no lantern rising from an octagonal steel fog signal building. The lighthouse is mounted on a square concrete base and painted white with a centralized horizontal red band. This lighthouse was constructed to be automated and thus had no keepers serving at this site. Presque Isle Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse is a significant example of second-quarter 20th century lighthouse architecture and engineering. It is representative of the design and construction methods used in building concrete and steel superstructure lighthouses during that time period. These designs proved to be suitable for marking piers and breakwaters in the Great Lakes. Owned and managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the site is open and the tower is closed. The lighthouse can be reached in good weather by walking the breakwater but it can be highly dangerous and is not recommended. There are good views from Presque Isle Park at the base of the breakwater. Located at the end of the breakwater in Presque Isle Park on the north side of Marquette Michigan, USA. Marquette Harbor Lighthouse (1866) ARLHS USA-477 / USCG 7-14630 (Station established 1853) (Active) Focal plane 77 ft (23.5 m) Flashing white every 10 seconds. Located in Marquette Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 40 ft (12 m) Square brick tower with lantern and gallery attached church style to a two and a half story brick keepers dwelling. The lighthouse is painted bright red with white trim. The lantern and gallery are painted white and the lantern roof is painted bright red. The original 4th order Fresnel Lens is on display at the Marquette Maritime Museum located near the lighthouse. Several other Fresnel Lenses are also on display in the museum. The now demolished fog signal building was connected to the lighthouse by a long catwalk. The foundation of the old fog signal building is still visible today at the end of the catwalk. There is an ongoing restoration plan for this lighthouse which is owned by the City of Marquette and managed by Marquette Maritime Museum. The park grounds surrounding the lighthouse are open year round, the site and lighthouse are only open to guided tours through the maritime museum from mid-May to mid-October. There are also good views of the lighthouse from McCarty's Cove beach park. Located on Lighthouse Point near the Maritime Museum in Marquette Michigan, USA. Grand Island Harbor Rear Range Lighthouse (1914) ARLHS USA-981 (Station established 1868) (Inactive since 1969) Located in Christmas Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 62 ft (19 m) Conical steel tower with lantern and gallery painted black. The tower is painted black with the upper front side painted white. Given its official name, this lighthouse is not actually located on Grand Island. This lighthouse once served as a range system with the former front range light replaced by a modern D9 cylinder steel tower. The original wooden lighthouse (1868) with attached one and a half story keepers house was moved to Munising where it survives today as a private residence. The original square wooden light tower has been removed. Grand Island Harbor Rear Range Lighthouse is also known as Bay Furnace Rear Range Lighthouse, Christmas Rear Range Lighthouse and End of the Road Lighthouse. Owned by the U.S. Forest Service and managed by Hiawatha National Forest, the site is open year round and the tower is closed. Located in Christmas Michigan on M-28 approximately 5 mi (8 km) west of Munising Michigan, USA. Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse (1868) ARLHS USA-328 (Inactive since 1913) Located on Grand Island on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 49 ft (15 m) Square wooden tower with decagonal lantern and gallery attached church-style to a one and a half story wood frame keepers house. Abandoned long ago, this lighthouse has been critically endangered for many years due to past neglect and beach erosion. Some efforts have been made to stabilize the lighthouse and a seawall has been installed to protect it from further erosion. Accessible only by boat, this lighthouse is now privately owned, the site, tower and dwelling are closed. Grand Island is designated a National Recreation Area within the Hiawatha National Forest, however this lighthouse is located on a small area of private land making it impossible to see by land. The best way to view the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse is by several of the boat tours that pass by the island, most notably the Pictured Rocks Cruises and Shipwreck Tours which both make an effort to get close up views of this fascinating lighthouse. Height 33 ft (10 m) Round steel tower painted white with the lantern roof painted red. This lighthouse was deactivated in 2019 when the range was deactivated by the Coast Guard. This range formerly guided boats into Munising Harbor. Owned by the U.S. National Park Service and managed by Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The site is open year round and the tower is closed. Located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 87 ft. (26.5 m) Round brick tower with lantern and gallery attached to a 2 story brick keeper's house. The lighthouse tower is painted white with the lantern and gallery painted black. The original 3rd order Fresnel lens is on display in the tower. This is a complete light station which has been fully restored to its 1910 appearance by the National Park Service. All of the support buildings survive at this remote site. Grand Marais Harbor of Refuge Inner Lighthouse (1898) ARLHS USA-1079 / USCG 7-14560 (Active) Focal plane 54 ft (16.5 m) Continuous white light. Located in Grand Marais Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 47 ft (14 m) Square pyramidal skeletal tower with lantern and gallery. An enclosed workroom is located below the lantern room and the original 5th order Fresnel lens is currently in use. The entire lighthouse is painted white and the 2 story brick keepers house (1908) is now a museum. Grand Marais Inner Lighthouse is located at the base of the pier near the keepers house. The site and grounds are open year round and the tower is closed. The keepers house museum is open daily in July and August and open on the weekends in July and September. The tower is owned by the U.S.Coast Guard and the keepers house is owned by the U.S. National Park Service / Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The site is managed by the Grand Marais Historical Society. Located at the end of Canal Street in Grand Marais Michigan, USA. Crisp Point Lighthouse (1904) ARLHS USA-203 / USCG 7-14535 (Active) Inactive 1947-2013 (Privately maintained) Focal plane 60 ft (18 m) White flash every 6 seconds. Located northeast of Paradise Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 58 ft (17.5 m) Conical brick tower with lantern and gallery attached to a one story brick service building. The lighthouse is painted white, the lantern and gallery are painted black and the lantern roof is painted red. The keepers house and other support buildings have long been demolished or washed away by Lake Superior. A replica of the original fog signal building was built as a visitor center for the station. A 4th order Fresnel lens is on display in the visitors center. Prior to the construction of the lighthouse this site was a life saving station dating back to 1876 known as Life Saving Station Number 10. Crisp Point Lighthouse has been endangered by beach erosion for many years. Volunteers have worked to save the tower and protect the lighthouse from the erosion of Lake Superior. In 2013 a nature preserve was established around the lighthouse to protect the site. Owned and managed by the Crisp Point Light Historical Society. The site is open year round and the tower is open on weekends in season. Located at the end of County Road 412, this is an unpaved, seasonal road for approximately 18 mi (28 km) 4WD is highly recommended to reach this lighthouse. Cell signals and GPS are non-existent in this area. When visiting Crisp Point it is recommended to leave the lighthouse before sunset, as it is very easy to get lost on the winding dirt roads while driving in the dark. This is a very remote area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it is highly recommended to bring everything you may need with you. Please keep in mind that while visiting Crisp Point you will be 18 mi (28 km) from the nearest paved road, 23 mi (37 km) from the nearest electricity and 27 mi (43 km) from the nearest fuel station or grocery store. Located north of Paradise, Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 76 ft (23 m) Square pyramidal steel skeletal tower with lantern and double gallery attached to a 2 story wood keepers house. The lighthouse is painted white with the galleries and lantern painted black. The lantern roof and the keepers house roof are painted red. This is a complete light station and one of the most beautiful and well preserved light stations in the U.S. The brick fog signal building (1936) brick oil house (1910) circular iron oil house (1893) 2 story assistant keepers house (1895) and the 2 story crew quarters (1923) all survive at this site. The 1923 crew quarters are also available for overnight stays. This is the oldest operating lighthouse in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is considered to be one of the most iconic lighthouses on the Great Lakes. The lighthouse tower is one of the oldest onshore skeletal lighthouses in the U.S. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) has restored the station and operates a maritime museum on site. The bivalve 2nd order Fresnel lens from White Shoal Lighthouse (Lake Michigan) is on display in the museum. Owned and operated by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the grounds are open year round and the lighthouse / museum are open daily May 1 through October 31. Whitefish Point marks the entrance into Whitefish Bay. All vessels entering or exiting Lake Superior must pass Whitefish Point. Due to the high number of shipwrecks, this area is infamously known as the "Graveyard of the Great Lakes" Whitefish Point Lighthouse is arguably the most important light on Lake Superior.
