seeing as i love tails to the point my chosen name irl is miles, i fancy myself as having good input on this. in my last post, i mentioned the main cast of sonic being children, and tails was listed as eight years old in the official character profile before canon ages were removed (for better or for worse). i find myself having complex feelings about this. he's a child prodigy enough to where he's building his own planes, but that calls into question whether or not to carry this intellegence into other areas, particularly emotionally/socially. in most adaptations/entries they do. i believe this is generally the right move, especially when he's sidelined which is most of the time. with him being a simple supporting character, there usually isnt time to dedicate to the imbalance to his maturity and intelligence, so having him be a voice of reason for sonic is alright. i do however think its more interesting for his character to have an imbalance. what i DONT mean by this is exemplified by lost world. he's immature in that game and not in a way that's interesing. he's just annoying. his distrust of sonic's judgement was completely unfounded, he seemed to have forgotten that sonic hadnt really ever lead him astray in the 25 years they had known each other, and he refused to see the bigger picture. i don't have any media i can point to as good characterization for tails being more immature, but it's just something id like to see explored.

having tails be a voice of reason to balance out sonic is great, as it helps them bounce off each other in a satisfying way. tails, as well as sonic, is a child, and i feel as though the writing doesnt often reflect exactly how that affects one's judgement and mentality. once again, i like the movies for this reason. tails is pretty terribly sidelined in these movies and i can get into that another time, but when he is in the action, he's allowed to be nervous, to make mistakes, and to be the way he naturally is.

(another thing number one: nine!!! i could go on and on about nine but i wont for times' sake. he gives a very interesting perspective on tails and the way he is naturally.)

they're not at all mature. the main cast ranges from 8-17, they're all kids and dont have the experience or development necessary to make wise decisions. sonic himself is a good example of this. some fans ive talked to strongly dislike the more immature versions of sonic (ie prime) because he's brash, impulsive, and doesn't think before he acts, but they forget thats the whole point. sonic is a child. he's also Sonic The Hedgehog, the famous and beloved savior of basically a few solar systems. when you're 16 years old, you're going to let that get to your head and do some stupid things, which is why i appreciate the more rude versions of sonic along with the typical hero archetype we most often find him embodying. along with this, sonic is the fastest thing alive and his mind should reflect that. I don't find a sonic that *isn't* impulsive to be a good representation of sonic at all. i appreciate the movies a lot with characterization because of this. he is a bit cringey, i wont be the first to say this, but ultimately hes a cocky teenager and i believe they do a good job at portraying that.
