Shutting Down
Due to a stupid long hiatus and the realization that I canât maintain 5 blogs, Iâve decided to condense all my blogs down to one. I will be continuing on the blog that I name in my next post.
The Demonâs Apprentice
â If you do or not do not have other siblings or relatives, they do not concern me. I do not consider them my legitimate children, they are bastards for all I care. They are unfit for my care. â He grunted and moved to smooth out his jacket. His voice quiets as he glanced outside, a fleeting though if dear runs through his mind as an unmistakable stench fills his nose, setting his every nerve on fire.Â
â My dear, do you recall how I warned you of strangers entering our midst whilst we still remain in London? â He mentioned and glanced to see her pallor face, her cheery smiles disguising her truly atrocious and malicious intent. â  They have arrived, in droves and flocks. It will not be long until reapers and angels alike are guarding every street corner. We depart tomorrow at Sunrise, it is not safe here, not for you or myself.â
âIâm not your child by blood, but do you count me as your daughter true?â She grinned and reached out to him for a hug. âOh, how sweet! I find it an amusing play, to say the least! A human the daughter of a demon, more so than any true blood relation of his?â She giggled quietly.
His words made her smile disappear with a quickness. She turned solemn and silent, her blind gaze turning to the outside. Aya frowned as she took note of the auras, looking considerably more and more confused. âTheyâre.. Well, some are blending with the reds. Theyâre⌠Camouflaging themselves⌠I donât like it. I canât tell them as easy as before my. I can tell them still apart, but itâs harderâŚâ

â Of course, I should have known that you were merely gesting.â Â He sighed and nodded at her suggestion. He was more than well aware of her true age, though he decided to keep it to himself, It was not in his best interests to let that slip. At the very least, she was wise enough to know not to push him for information he was not willing ti share.Â
â  You do not need to marry, a woman such as yourself can hold much power being a unmarried maiden as you would be a married wife.â  He replied smoothly and touched her shoulder. â Until the time comes when you find yourself a man whom you wish to fully control, let us not think of marriage.â
"I wasn't jesting about a new pet, Father. It's been some time since I last had one." She smiled and took a seat at the window, looking out to the scene before their home. "I want one with yellow hair and eyes the color of the morning dew on the leaves. Mmn.. Maybe I might keep one like that, with fair hair, and a personality that won't break so easy. All my previous pets break as soon as their third finger..."
The maiden closed her eyes and let her mind wander. Even if she could be cold-hearted and cruel, some part of her heart was still human in nature. Her mind envisioned a grand ball with a male she described, tall and handsome, who was her equal. He was just as quick and sly as she, as much a human-turned-demon as she, while still being human.

âAnd that I am happy to be.â She gently tugged his gloved hands, trying to pull him towards a more open part of their home. âLetâs dance, letâs celebrate! Iâm glad to be alive, and we should celebrate that fact, yes? Just like a birthday, to celebrate a new year alive, but to celebrate all the years to come!â She smiled warmly, her cheeks rosy and her small form full of energy and desire to play and dance as she hadnât done when she was the age appropriate for such things.
He chuckled and nodded, holding her close before she rushed around like that of an excited kitten, ready to play, explore and discover their own reflection. â  A celebration you say? Goodness, that is an interesting concept, while I am more than happy to enjoy the life you have with you, a small part of my believes that you simply wish to attract a new pet.â  He teased and kissed the top of her head, â I know youâve been watching the Viscountâs eldest sonâŚâÂ
âWe can call it my birthday, and he my birthday present,â she said in the same light, merry voice. Please, Papa? I want to celebrate a birthday and drink and be merry, and my little cage has grown dust from how long itâs been since Iâve had a.. Hehe.. Suitor?â She sometimes liked to toy with the suitors who wanted her, every once in a while taking one and showing them the true reason why she wasnât âwife materialâ, as she appeared in public.
âItâll be fun! You can decorate here or rent out some other place for the night, and I know you can make it perfect within an hour to celebrate a new year. I wonder how old Iâll be turning, though? I never gave much thought to thatâŚâ
â  A birthday present, hmm?â He almost laughed and took her slender hand, gently twirling her about their little room, her lithe laugh over her supposed âsuitorsâ (though victim would be a more apt title) would bring any demonâs frown into a smirk, and he was not immune.Â
â You are a promising young woman, about the age of seventeen,â He paused and touched her slender face, the thoughts running through his mind. Surely, she could get herself a suitor, making him disappear was not a simple task, certainly not when they were clearly hosting the party, and he was such a upstanding young man⌠Then again, his prolonged life was nothing if not full of challenges, and he himself could use a meal.
â What do you think about a new yearâs gala?â
The young apprentice hummed a waltz as her demonic father danced with her. When he stopped, she did, and she looked up towards him with a smile. His words ran through her head, and after a quick calculation, she nodded and affirmative.
âItâs certainly be easier for a young man to get drunk and lost there than at a dance. He would probably slip out during the show to relieve himself, and maybe slip on ice or trip on an untied lace, and then fall into some dark and dismal cage to never be seen from again!â More laughter pealed from her slender throat, and she offered a warm smile to him. âWhat do you say, Father?â
â  I think that despite how incredibly possible such a situation is, this is a delicate matter, my dearest, we must be careful, we must act accordingly as is expected of us.â He paused and reached for her hair, tucking it behind her ear, silently thinking of a time when she would not dare to let him near her, touch her, hold her, and now. She bowed and bent to every one of his commands, his own wants and needs.
â  A young an could very well get drunk and wander off, but we must have the public believe there it truly no possibility of survival, to do so, we must set up a decoyâŚâ   He mused and touched her shoulder,â  a carriage accident a few miles from our hosted party should do, the lantern would burn any remains of him, we will throw his clothes into the fire to prove his death.â
"I was merely thinking of a scenario, my dearest father," she said with a giggle. "You always take care of that fickle and difficult planning. Besides, the most I can do is burn down London or something wild and uncontrollable. It's you who has the more refined power." She knew she could control her powers more than she said, but she usually let them run free for her own amusement.
"A New Year's gala it shall be! I think also we can decide New Year's to be my birthday, as well? It'd make it easier to track my age, since I don't know my actual birthday, and if you do, you haven't said it. Hm.. Bugger, I'm nearing the marrying age. I don't want to do that," she said, wrinkling her nose. "Ah.. I'll focus on parties and fun for now."

The Demonâs Apprentice
He listened to her carefully, thinking about whether or not to answer her honestly. The thought of the after life could send many minds reeling as it was far more complicated that âHeaven vs. Hell.â The reapers were merely collectors, it was a vast group of others who judged and decided where the individual soul would be placed and what would happen to it there after.Â
â I cannot definitively say,â the demon replied slowly, deciding it best to keep her in the dark regarding such a fact.â Where one is placed can depend on any number of factors, as well if they are turned to a reaper, angel or demon. It is best you do not know, perhaps another time, when you are older.â Â
âI have the feeling you at least know the real answer as to what Iâm asking, but I wonât pry any more.â She turned back to the window, blind eyes sweeping the landscape outside. âI wonder what happens when an angel dies, or a demon for that matter⌠Ah, well. I will never know that myself, I know.â She shrugged slightly, lifting her fingers to toy with the pearls that encircled her slim throat. She knew pearls to mean beauty and innocence, which she found amusingly ironic, considering the acts that she had done. But she liked the feeling of the silky orbs that clicked very lightly together when moved.
â At times, knowledge is power, in this case, such power can and will be abused. It is not you that I do not trust, it is those around you that I do not have any faith in.â While the demon hardly had any faith in anything at all, not even in his supposed daughter. As she toyed with the tiny teardrops upon her neck, he found himself somewhat amused.Â
â You always loved pearls, may I ask why, my dear?â He paused, already having an inkling as to why she so often wore the underwater jewels. â They suit you,â he teased and touched her curls.Â
âYou hardly trust me at all, Father. A demon only trusts himself, after all.â She chuckled softly at her words. She knew his voice when he lied, or at least most of the time, so she knew he wasnât telling the whole truth when he said it wasnât her who he didnât trust.
âI like pearls because of the way they feel, for the most part, but also I enjoy the irony in wearing them. Those who wear pearls are beautiful of soul and pure of heart, but me? Hah! Iâm the apprentice and daughter of none other than Lord Sebastian Michealis, which makes me near the opposite of such a meaning.â She smiled at the touch to her hair, enjoying the feeling of his silken gloves through her curly locks.
â Quite so, my dear, quite so indeed.â A brief chuckle escaped his lips, his daughter knew him far too well, his smooth lies did not slip past her, not always. Every so often he spiderwebs of grey hair snatched them, caught on. She was clever, but not clever enough. At the very least she knew better than to continue questioning him, much like the many foolish humans before her.Â
â It does, but you are as graceful and elegant as a pearl. Your smile is purer than any other Iâve ever had the pleasure of laying eyes on. Your laugh is like twinkling diamonds or star in a night sky, shining far above the world, past where we shall ever reach.â He paused and her shoulder, then her cheek, a smile on his face as he leaned down to kiss the crown of her head. â My most beautiful child, more than I could have ever wished for.â
"You flatter me, Father," she purred. She loved the praise and attention- it made her feel so warm and fuzzy inside. It was always so easy to flatter the demon's daughter, but it was her heart not easily swayed. No, the girl could soak up as much devotion and attention as a rose would sunlight, but her thorns always remained sharp as ever, and nobody knew yet how to trim them away, aside from her father.
His latter words made her brow raise in a graceful arc, and she chuckled softly. "One could almost say your words have another meaning, Father. Do I have some unknown siblings out in the world or down in Hell?" He was infinitely older than her, and because of it she knew it wasn't unlikely. It made her curious, but not enough to venture far down the forbidden paths of her father's secretive past.

The childâs nose nestled into the faint warmth that lingered from the office air collecting between his body and the fabric, and she relaxed again with a quiet sigh. Her hand fell to the floor, and with it came her rosary. The item with its well-worn beads and its broken cross rolled a few inches before stopping, hooked still on her pinky so it couldnât leave entirely. It was a simple trinket she was never seen without, mundane in every way, but to her it must have meant something.
After an hour or two of napping, the child woke again, a soft yawn coming from her. Her hand tightened about the thin cord that held the wooden beads, and before she even opened her blind eyes beneath the fabric of her blindfold, she wound the trinket about her wrist. Aya shifted and sat up, gathering the now-warm coat up and pulling it over her own dirty self, a much-too-big robe on her. It could have been cute, a like a little child playing grown-up, if it wasnât for the filth that was always on her.
When Aya came to, there was no sign of Larry in the office. No sound of shuffling papers and scrawling pen, or of grumpy muttering to himself; no smell of posh cologne mostly covering the tiniest hints of the scent of decay, other than the trace amounts left simply by his sitting in the same chair day in and day out. A partially cracked window let in the sounds of traffic from outside, though they sounded far more muffled and distant than they should have since there was a major street right outside the agencyâs door; that was the protection magics built right into the buildingâs foundations at work.
The door to his office was open, and listening carefully one could hear his voice carry from down the hall, in the main reception area of the third floor where his receptionist and assistant Darlene manned the desk.
â..ancel my appointments tomorrow, too.â
âYour ex-wife is coming in to discuss her biannual investigation, Mr Oblivion.â The feminine voice with the hints of a Russian accent that hadnât disappeared even after years of living in the Nightside (predominated by English accent, like Larryâs) was Darleneâs.
âSic her on the new woman.. Margie? Is that her name? Weâll consider it her initiation. If she can handle Donna, she can handle anything.â A pause. âBut if sheâs not crying by the end of it, give her a raise.â
âOf course, Mr Oblivion.â
She didn't much pay attention to the sound coming from outside. The voices were speaking business things, and business things bored her. Instead, she went to the chaos of scents that wafted from the window. Food and moonlight, drugs and cigarettes, car exhaust and blood. There wasn't any fresh air that she could smell, but the air she did smell was what she knew as home. It was familiar, scary, and oddly comforting.
The click of the door opening made the blind child turn. She waved a bit towards the footsteps that entered. A sniff told her that the entrant wore men's cologne, and since the lady at the desk smelled of rotting floral perfume to her nose, she knew it to be the Oblivion brother.
"Thanks for letting me nap. I feel a bit better now that I've slept, but my eye's itchy. I don't much like it when it itches... Can you lead me to a bathroom so I can clean it out?"
âYeah⌠They keep me from rotting in there,â she mumbled. She hunkered down in her seat, willing to wait in the comfort of the relative safety of this room. It was better than outside, and she was beginning to feel drowsy. Aya knew that it was still sometime around âmiddayâ, even if the hour never changed. A nap wouldnât hurt, and she could tuck herself into a corner while waiting for him to take his break, and be out of his way.
Thinking on that, the child got up and toddled over to the closest corner she could feel. She sat down there and nestled herself in the nook, then yawned and closed her good eye to nap. It wasnât too long before she was out like a light. Like nearly everyone she knew, though, she would wake at a whisper of possible trouble, or her name.
Larry could have brought up his own (much less pleasant) experiences with maggots, but he chose not to. A story for another day. Instead he turned back to his work, of which there was always plenty to be done. Larry wasnât one of those company owners who delegated all of his work to his employees. He was very much a hands-on sort of boss.
It was once he was already digging into the paperwork he had stacked up for the day that he noticed Aya asleep in the corner, and the corner of his mouth twitched in something resembling a very brief smile. He rose once again from his chair and took his suit jacket off, draping it over her. It wasnât like he kept a blanket in his office or anything, but that would at least keep her warm for now.

He pursed his lips as she spoke to him, they could very well change their names, though a new division of angels and reapers wouldnât stick to names, not in their case. Changing both of their names wouldnât help, but it certainly wouldnât harm either. His mind then wandered to her next question, he hadnât ever told her his true name, for numerous reasons. The first of many being it held far too much power over him, and she fared just fine with his fake name. He responded well should she need anything, there truly was no need for her to have possession of his real name.Â
âI doubt weâll need to change our names,â he mused and looked at her. âAs for my true name, I suppose I may tell you, when the time comes, but not for many years. As my daughter, it is my aesthetic to keep you safe, and giving you my name would put you in an infinite amount of danger.âÂ
âAlright.â She accepted the answer with a nod and peaceful smile. Her blind eyes were watching outside the carriage, undoubtedly following the silver auras that flitted about among the red she saw. He could see an eyebrow arch in surprise at something, but it went down soon enough.
âI keep forgetting thereâs others of your kind. Theyâre so very rare, arenât they? I have seen one or two, but theyâre much less common than even the reapers.â She turned her gaze to the wall of black that was on the other side of the carriage. âWhy is it that youâre here, Father? Not here as in London, but as in here, on Earth. Donât you have to be summoned? And if so, should you not have a master to be tending to?â Now that she opened the door to all the questions, and that they had a long journey ahead of them, the blind girl wanted to see what answers she could get from the demon.
âIndeed we are,â he answered quietly, âdemons are becoming harder and harder to come by. With religion seemingly losing itâs grip on the common-folk, it would seem summoning demons has become a practice forgotten by time.â He turned and listened to her questions, and he gave a shrug in reply.Â
âTraditionally, yes, a demon would require a summoning in order to transcend to the human plane; however, the world has never been more sinful that it is now. With so much hate brewing, with war brewing and everything in between, demons are more powerful than ever, even without the belief that we exist.â He explained quietly, âthe greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was making everyone believe he wasnât realâŚâ He murmured and turned to her.Â
âI cam here on my own accord, if that is what youâre asking. I am more than powerful enough to do so.âÂ
âI was just curious, thatâs all,â she said. The young woman smiled towards him. âIâm glad that you chose to be here. Iâd dread to imagine just what may have happened to me if you hadnât caught me trying to pickpocket you.â Aya giggled softly as she recalled the event so long ago. âAh, if I had known the trouble that I could have gotten into, if you had only been less lenient.â
Aya shook her head, silver curls bouncing about her cheeks. The rosy girl reached up to adjust the pearls in her hair, then looked out to the auras again. âDo you think that we will encounter more angels in America? Maybe when Iâm older and stronger, I might be able to defeat one without collapseâŚâ Inwardly, she shuddered, the angelâs screams echoing in her mind and ears. âI can only hope that Iâll become stronger, in time.â
âI do not think you should dwell on such âmight have beensâ, had you been any more normal, shall we say, there would not be a âyouâ to speak of.â He paused and touched her shoulder. âAngels reside everywhere, only very few become active, and usually only when they feel the presence of something particularly dangerous, for example; a demon.â He sighed and drummed his fingers over his knee.Â
âYou will certainly become strong enough to defeat an angel, but such a time will not come to pass for many years. For now, let me handle any sort of dangers, if that was your reaction to an angel, I shudder to think what you would do against a reaper. However, on both accounts neither would actively seek you out, keep in mind, it is not you they are after, it is I. Should they interrogate you, capture you, hurt you, simply give away my location, call me to them, and you will be released. I can almost promise you that I will survive whatever it is they throw at me, but you will not.â He warned gravely and touched the top of her head.Â
âBut for now, do not dwell on such things.âÂ
She nodded solemnly as she listened to the words he spoke. She had yet to encounter a reaper, since her father was careful to keep her from the kind. In all honesty, Aya was curious about the creatures that took the lives of those destined to die. A thought struck her, and she tilted her head slightly.
"Father? Is there life after death? I know that the Reapers claim the lives of those who are meant to die, but what happens to the souls of those claimed? Do they go to Heaven and Hell, do they become demons or angels or reapers?"
"Papa, I never sold my soul to you... Why did you keep me as your daughter? Answer truthfully now, please." (( Idk, feel like a short thread? @seeingblind ))
âI saw great potential in your abilities,â he replied smoothly, âwhy else would I take you in? Now, why I let you stay⌠Thatâs a bit more complicated.â
Sebastian touched her forehead, he warm embrace heating up his nearly ice-cold flesh. He chuckled and let out a sigh, âin time, my dear, and we shall see what becomes of us. Who knows, perhaps I perish before you, time has a funny way of making things happen, and fate has never been predictable.âÂ
âOh, I very much doubt that, dear Father. The only way that you might possibly die before me were if an angel were to kill you, and you know I wouldnât let that happen. That, or if somehow I became an immortal as you are, and the same thing happened. Otherwise, it would be me who died before you.â His young apprentice took his hands and smiled up towards him. âCome now, letâs dance! I want to celebrate the life we have.â
âI highly doubt that an Angel would have the chance to,â he chuckled. âI am more than I appear, my dearest daughter, an angel does not stand a chance against a demon of my calibre.â He smirked and kissed the top of her head. âLet us not think of immortality, for such a goal is long away from us. For now, you are my daughter, my Aya, and that is how you will remain.âÂ
"And that I am happy to be." She gently tugged his gloved hands, trying to pull him towards a more open part of their home. "Let's dance, let's celebrate! I'm glad to be alive, and we should celebrate that fact, yes? Just like a birthday, to celebrate a new year alive, but to celebrate all the years to come!" She smiled warmly, her cheeks rosy and her small form full of energy and desire to play and dance as she hadn't done when she was the age appropriate for such things.
âThat doesnât much helpâŚâ She sighed and chewed on the end of her sleeve, her blind gaze undoubtedly on the floor. âI donât know who or what or where to be scared of more⌠I just want to be somewhere thatâs safe enough that I could survive, and maybe even get a family and a bed and food every day⌠I canât do much about that but dream, though. Sometimes I pretend the maggots are little people having a home and family in my eye⌠Itâs probably creepy to normal people, that eyeâŚâ She idly reached up and scratched at the socket through her blindfold.
âEither way⌠I donât know where to go. It isnât like I can just go there, and if I decide Iâd rather be here, come back. The Nightside doesnât work that way. Itâs fickle and bratty and doesnât do what anyone wants, unless youâre one of those people who went to the schoolâŚâ
Larry nodded. âThe Deep School. I know a few ways to get back and forth from here to London Proper, but probably nothing especially safe for a young girl.â After all, most of them took you into the equivalent of the Nightside in London Proper, a square mile of broken down old tenements where the criminal element had a tendency to gather.
âLook.. donât worry about it tonight.â He sighed deeply, though it was obviously not a reflexive action, since he really didnât need to do those kinds of things anymore. âYou can come home with me tonight. There arenât many places safer in the Nightside. My brother isnât good for much, but.. keeping us safe is one thing he actually is pretty good at.
âAnd trust me. Iâm not exactly in a position to judge people for having maggots living in them.â
"Yeah... They keep me from rotting in there," she mumbled. She hunkered down in her seat, willing to wait in the comfort of the relative safety of this room. It was better than outside, and she was beginning to feel drowsy. Aya knew that it was still sometime around 'midday', even if the hour never changed. A nap wouldn't hurt, and she could tuck herself into a corner while waiting for him to take his break, and be out of his way.
Thinking on that, the child got up and toddled over to the closest corner she could feel. She sat down there and nestled herself in the nook, then yawned and closed her good eye to nap. It wasn't too long before she was out like a light. Like nearly everyone she knew, though, she would wake at a whisper of possible trouble, or her name.

The Demonâs Apprentice
"I was just curious, that's all," she said. The young woman smiled towards him. "I'm glad that you chose to be here. I'd dread to imagine just what may have happened to me if you hadn't caught me trying to pickpocket you." Aya giggled softly as she recalled the event so long ago. "Ah, if I had known the trouble that I could have gotten into, if you had only been less lenient."
Aya shook her head, silver curls bouncing about her cheeks. The rosy girl reached up to adjust the pearls in her hair, then looked out to the auras again. "Do you think that we will encounter more angels in America? Maybe when I'm older and stronger, I might be able to defeat one without collapse..." Inwardly, she shuddered, the angel's screams echoing in her mind and ears. "I can only hope that I'll become stronger, in time."
