Visual Perception â Book Cover Design Exploring Gestalt Principles Through Visual Storytelling
This is a book cover design project I was given, while at San Jose State University. It explores the concept of Visual Perception through the lens of Gestalt Psychology. The goal was to create a cover that not only reflects, but actively demonstrates, how the human brain organizes visual informationâinviting viewers to engage with the design on a perceptual level.
Using principles like figure-to-ground, closure, similarity, and proximity, the design plays with ambiguity and illusion. A minimalist, high-contrast palette keeps the focus on form and structure, while fragmented typography and implied shapes encourage the viewer to âfill in the blanks.â
The result was a sleek, intellectual cover using typography that sparks curiosity and rewards closer inspection. The idea was to call out the title of the book while offering a visual experience that mirrors the very ideas the book would explore.
Deliverables: â Front cover design â Spine (Side cover) â Print mockup
