You know what, I bet Patrick O'Brian is the reason I always feel the need to extensively research every subject I write about. That man gave us the entirety of maritime jargon and then an audience surrogate with zero practical sailing skills just so he could teach us all the maritime jargon. And then also gave that character extremely niche scientific hobbies so he could also teach us about critters and natural sciences in the 1800's. I swear it's the epitome of 'i learned this while researching something completely different, fell down a rabbit hole of discovery, and now i'm adding it to the story bc i think it's neat! :B'
