002 in our inspiration series continues with the Jørgen Leth and his wonderful short film The Perfect Human. We copied borrowed his idea for our music video for artist Helado Negro.
We might start a series of work (& directors) that (we’ve stolen from) have inspired us.
001 of course starts with Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” for a short we did called “Remedios”
A few years ago I directed a music video for one of my favorite artists’ Helado Negro. My concept was simple but audacious, a remake of Jørgen Leth’s fantastic short film “The Perfect Human”. Why The Perfect Human? For one, it’s a wonderful film that (honestly) I’m still deciphering. For two, Helado Negro’s track ‘Regresa’ seemed to beautifully, and with a groove, tell a story of a man missing, or longing, for his women (honestly I’m still deciphering that also). None the less it seemed like the perfect match. Aside from some added personal touches to the story - what’s up with the animals, chairs and all the time travel stuff? - It’s probably the closest I’ll ever get to an actual remake, much like this post is the closest I’ll probably get to a case study of sorts. Above is a side by side comparison of my video (left) and Jørgen’s film (right). And below is the video, for your viewing pleasure.
