âThereâs a baseline where weâre all marginally human-esque. Or at least learned to seem human, be passable about it. Or share some original connection, makes it all a little ridiculous that anyone human or otherwise wants to claim thereâs that much difference.â He didnât know from personal experience how humans became things they werenât originally, chance or some genetic slide of genes to one side or another, but the baseline still remained. Even werewolves, once upon a time, came from at least marginally human origins.
âWhy do I see that idea crashing and burning outstandingly with some people? The ones who will lock someone in a closet, specifically.â He supposed it could have been worse, he didnât really have any reason to be wary of his supposed counterpart. As entertaining as someone that would constantly make life miserable all the time would be it had to get old quickly. Wouldnât last out the first day without the potential for a lifetime of therapy.
âI consider most people terrifying until proven otherwise,â he replied solemnly, âAnd you just have the stab someone in the face look. Itâs a compliment.â Should have been a compliment, the world as a whole was an unreasonably angry place anymore and that made it passable as a favorable observation.
âI donât dislike him.â The situation, entirely, but the person involved? He couldnât say he had any real issues with Basil. âHeâs got this resting..I donât know, resting apprehensive face like heâs waiting for someone to throw something at him and thatâs a little concerning.â No, he didnât want to think about it excessively, the subject of Basil overall, because it was complicated. âNot that I plan to throw things at him, well, marshmallows donât count as I was under intense undue emotional stress at the time.â
Quinn paused, the realization that the conversation was twisting itself towards his favorite subject, himself and the happenings of his life, and that really wasnât a good road to travel in the company of strangers. Self indulgent creature that he was, it was tempting, but best to leave his personal life as a sidebar.
Good thing he had that entire commentary about emotional torture of oneâs enemies to steer him back in track. Wasnât that delightful?
âI was going to retract my opinion of face-stabbing but now, no, I donât think I will.â He regarded her with another quick once-over, making a mental note or two. âRemind me not to annoy you too much, Iâm already too psychologically wasted to play that game.â He looked bemused, or something along the lines of it, by the entire situation.
--- Luna shrugged, âhumans are fickle. They donât seem to even like humans who are different.â Although sheâd never wanted to be a vampire, a part of her was glad she wasnât human anymore. âBut youâre right. We arenât so different.â Sheâd let herself forget her humanity when sheâd turned, but she still didnât see much difference between a human and a vampire. One just needed a little extra to do as much damage as the other.
âIâm not excusing it, but wouldnât they still do it if there wasnât a soul bond?â Luna asked. She couldnât imagine just locking someone away. Spending some time protecting them while figuring a way out wasnât that much of an inconvenience.
âHmm, seems like a good policy,â Luna chuckled. âThank you.â Usually that sort of comment, when it was about her, was from her family scolding her for doing something they thought would scare the kids. She wasnât necessarily trying to be particularly scary, but she wasnât exactly the most inviting person either.
âBetter than hating him, right?â She offered. âIntense undue emotional distress sounds pretty accurate. Perhaps youâll just have to convince him that marshmallows are the only thing getting thrown...â she couldnât help but laugh.
She may have been better behaved the past century or so, but the first half of her life, sheâd held little care for the lives of anyone around her. And even if sheâd behaved during the times sheâd spent around her family, sheâd still never fully let go of the early centuries of her life.
âI want to claim that Iâm not that easily pissed off.â But there had never been much of an in-between for her, with emotions. Either everything was over-controlled, or she was chaotic. âBut that would be a lie.â Luna shrugged, smiling sweetly. âI might be a little bit petty.â But with everything else going on, she didnât think sheâd be likely to focus any anger on anyone but silas and the council.
