Working through this data project is making me think differently about lower engagement.

If a post receives fewer likes or comments, does that mean the content did not work? I do not think it is that simple. Some posts may speak to a smaller part of the discourse community, especially if the topic is more academic, abstract, or specific.

For the data analysis project, I am looking at how Instagram posts from the English & World Languages department communicate culture through content choices.

One question I keep coming back to is this: when a post receives more engagement, is it because the topic is more meaningful, because the visual is easier to understand, or because the audience feels closer to the people shown?

Something I am trying to remember in this module is that lower engagement does not automatically mean bad writing.

Some posts ask more from the audience. A blog post, research update, or academic quote may require more time, more background knowledge, or more interest in a specific topic. That does not make it less valuable.

Graduation posts seem simple at first, but they actually carry a lot of meaning.

A photo of graduates is not just a photo. It shows completion, pride, belonging, and community. The audience does not need a long explanation to understand why the moment matters. The robes, smiles, diplomas, and group photo all do part of the writing.

I am starting to define content strategy as the repeated choices an account makes across posts to build meaning for an audience.

For a university department, content strategy is not just about posting updates. It can show what the department values. If an account keeps posting graduates, student awards, research projects, and events, that pattern communicates a culture of recognition and academic community.

One thing that stood out to me this week is that data on social media is not just data. It represents people making choices.

When someone likes a graduation post, they might be celebrating a friend, a student, a classmate, or even their own future graduation. That like is small, but it still means someone stopped scrolling and responded.

That makes social media analysis feel more meaningful. We are not just counting numbers. We are trying to understand why people connect with certain posts and what those posts communicate within a community.

This module is making me rethink what data actually shows us. Before this class, I would usually look at likes or comments as simple numbers. Now I’m starting to see them as small signs of audience participation.

A like can show recognition. A comment can show conversation. A share can show that someone thinks the post matters enough to pass along. That feels more human than just saying “this post performed better.”

Data does not tell the whole story, but it gives us a place to start asking better questions about audience, culture, and web writing choices!

nformation architecture makes me think about how content is organized before someone reads it. If a post is hard to follow, too cluttered, or missing clear structure, the message can get lost. That means organization is part of the writing.

On Tumblr, the reader experiences the image, text, spacing, and hashtags together. The order of information affects whether the post feels easy to understand or easy to scroll past.

Writing on Tumblr feels different than writing something only a professor will read. Even though this is still a class assignment, the post exists in a public web space. That makes me think more carefully about tone, clarity, and how my words might be understood by people outside the class.

Public writing creates a different kind of responsibility. It reminds me that digital content becomes part of a larger footprint, even when the post is short.

One thing I’m already noticing is that web writing changes depending on the space. A Tumblr post, Instagram caption, blog post, and website page all have different expectations. The same message cannot always be copied and pasted everywhere.

That matters because each platform shapes how people read. On Tumblr, hashtags, reblogs, visuals, and post structure all affect how content moves. Web writing is not just about writing clearly. It is about understanding the space the writing lives in.

Before this class, I usually thought of content as the final thing people see: a post, caption, photo, video, or website. Now I’m starting to think content is more than the finished product. Content includes the decisions behind it, like who the audience is, where the post lives, how people find it, and what the post is supposed to do.

That changes how I look at web writing. A post can be written well, but if it is not useful, searchable, or built for the platform, it may not actually work.
