does anyone remember if there’s a canon answer for what color jess’s and glain’s eyes are? for art purposes

No idea about Glain. Not sure it comes up anywhere.

Glain - P&F: Her dark eyes had gone distant and the look in them sad. There’s a couple more instances that say dark but no colour referenced.

Thomas - The easy one, blue eyes referenced everywhere.

Wolfe - P&F: Wolfe stared for a moment, black eyes gone blank.

Jess - Thank goodness for alternate POV because finding a description of Jess or Brendan’s eyes is a nightmare! These are the only two semi helpful references I could find in all 5 books:

S&I Jess POV: His brother’s eyes were wide and dark and wholly mad with fury

S&P Wolfe POV - Jess’s rifle slipped and he jammed it back in. His face had gone taunt with effort, his eyes black with concentration.

Khalila - I&B: Returned their gazes with forthright brown eyed intensity.

Dario - I&B: His bitter-black eyes fixed on Jess, and he advanced on him. Jess POV refers to Dario’s eyes as black a few times in the books but in S&I Khalila POV refers to them as brown so maybe a dark brown?

Morgan - I&B: her eyes, which were a striking light brown

My personal interpretation of Dario’s eye colour is that he does have very dark brown eyes. Jess isn’t used to that colour, so he calls them black, Khalila is more used to seeing people with very dark eyes, so she just calls them brown.

(This is also my opinion of Wolfe. Eyes so dark the pupils sometimes seem to merge with the irises - Jess calls this black)

Phones, computers, smart tech in the house? I'm thinking Dario just has Apple everything because money, and Jess just has something that can survive being dropped and damaged 😂

Wolfe and Morgan probably use Linux, idk. Thomas builds his own computers. Also Khalila's phone is probably rose gold.

Wolfe has a laptop that converts to a touch screen iPad for marking

Santi had an Alexa until Wolfe smashed it once he recovered and technology was banned from the bedroom

Dario has all the stupid unneeded tech just because it's new (think the airpods anti loss attachment that's basically fake wire earphones)

Khalila has an apple watch that reminds her when to pray and how long she's been fasting

Jess is a gamer boy and Morgan is his alt computer science gf

When Thomas gets a new phone he adds back all the features that companies took out for shock value (home button, headphone plug, buttons generally)

Glain won a laptop during a game of cards against Dario and only uses it for school work when it's necessary and when she can piss Dario off with it.

This is Glain she probably ends up dangling him off the cliff and waiting for him to apologise. Meanwhile he’s trying to figure out if he can land on just the right bit of rock to climb back up a-ok.

I know absolutely nothing about music, but I think that if there is an opportunity to have Wolfe playing harpsichord, you should write that.

He needs to play harpsichord but also I need him (and his hair) to play Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

Ok so, time for my ideas anyway …

Wolfe plays at least three instruments, with skill. One has a keyboard (piano?). He hasn’t played in years but gets back to it post-series.

Keyed instrument. Assuming keys and strings?? Like a piano?? Ok. So. We have this very interesting Wikipedia article on the oldest form of keyed instrument, the water organ; plz pay attention to section about the Ancient Greek Alexandrian invention hydraulis. I vote that even though I know very little about it, because I am a fucking history fetishist and like “the oldest thing”. Other options include piano, organ, harpsichord, and clavichord. Note: an awwwwful lot of the history of the guitar seems to be Spanish. Do or do not do with that what you will. 

I would personally be more tempted to go for the lute, but that’s because, as previously mentioned, I glom onto old things. Ooh, or this? Or the oud. Shut up, Maz.

I feel like Thomas is a piano kind of man. Delicate fingering. On the other hand, he’d have the lungs for a blow-y thing. Trumpet for Thomas?!!? Or double bassoon?? help I can’t decide.

Nic plays one instrument rather badly.

I can picture him playing piano (but that may be because I associate pianos with Germany/ Poland due to the pianist) and although he would have the lungs for a double bassoon we've got to think of where he would play these things. Did he have a proper workshop as a kid or did he just use a shed/his room for building stuff, if so it wouldn't be properly sound proofed to play loud instruments. The piano can be loud but it's soothing played right, trumpets and such give too much adrenaline.

Why am I talking about soundproofing? Here's why

Thomas says this twice (?) In ink and bone so the memory is prominent enough to happen a few time, meaning that Thomas's little cousins spent a lot of time with Thomas/ at his house/ even lived with his family. Thomas would be very aware of this (because he is baby) and would see no point learning the louder instruments when it would disturb people.

Pianos however are instruments that are admired (que every family orientated movie dinner scene where someone plays the piano) and are used for family gatherings, perhaps his mum helped teach him how to play piano as a de-stress/ way to understand her child with mental difficulties before he found his love of machines. Also he could play it whenever at a reasonable time of day because a soft melody would send the babies to sleep and calm them down.

Okay so I have a few headcanons about everyone starting a family and all that so I just want to write them down quickly.

Wolfe & Santi

Yes I know I know they don’t have any children but I have a feeling that after everything has calmed down and all the children have settled in to their respective houses, don’t you think they’d realise how quiet everything is now. They almost miss how they would have to keep an eye out for 6 rambunctious teenagers with varying temperaments. Santi would be the first person even thinking about another child but Wolfe would he the first to put it put in the open.

After much discussion they decide to adopt a child who has been rejected by the iron tower. Something close to Wolfe’s heart and Santi didn’t complain, seeing as the child they feel in love with turned out to be Italian. Noah Santi was adopted at 6 years old and heavily enjoys spending his days with his papa on the high garda grounds and his nights cuddled with his dad reading the latest edition of his favourite novel. The biggest sweetheart and the most mature until he hits his teenage years and starts crushing on a certain Scholars daughter. Noah is still unsure on what career path he wants to pursue but his parents are supportive no matter what.

Dario & Khalilah

Even though they will be getting married young, they won’t have children until a few years after. Well that was the plan anyway. Aaliyah Santiago was born 2 years after their wedding (Khalilah found out she was pregnant a month after this fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/18332954 ) and having a silver shovel in her mouth is an understatement. Complete and utter daddy’s girl and Dario’ s pockets always felt lighter after being left alone with her. She has Khalilah’s wit and Dario’s confidence, aiming to be the youngest Archivist and also the most fashionable. Her “best friend” Noah always pushed her to brilliance but holding her back when her naivety gets the best of her.

Next to come was Malik Santiago, 2 years younger than Aaliyah and 10 times more troublesome. Much to Dario’ s annoyance, Uncle Jess and Aunty Glain were always favourite. He’s the most troublesome child and tends to give his mother a heart attack within 2 sentences. He aspires to be apart of the high garda and wants to give Captain Wathen a run for her money.

Khalilah and Dario wished to stop there but Allah’s plan was different and 5 years later Hidayah Santiago was born. She was a sick baby and was born on the smaller side (and stayed there all her life). She’s the biggest sweetheart one could imagine and her personality is uncanny to her Uncle Thomas. Hidayah’s love of nature and animals tempted her into working for an animal sanctuary and growing some of the natural remedies little Brightwell helps come up with.

Jess & Morgan (very much based on a headcanon I read somewhere, I’ll leave a link when I find it)

Morgan choses to never experience pregnancy, every thought she has of it brings her back to the iron tower so that’s off the table. They’re desperate to become parents though, especially after falling in love with their niece and nephew. One day they get a message from a local orphanage informing them of twin boys who’s parents have just died and the pair don’t hesitate to adopt them. Brendan and Liam Brightwell match perfectly with their namesake, well personality wise. Liam prefers to take the moral highground over profit and has his eyes set on becoming a Scholar. Brendan is all about buisness and wanting to look the strongest, with the help of Uncle Dario he started up his own boxing place and is becoming very popular. When he was little and him and Jess were play fighting, Brendan fell down the stairs and ended up with a scar on his head. Jess cried after Brendan said they now matched. Brendan,Liam, and Malik first meeting took 10 years off of everyone’s life, the biggest trouble makers you could find and defied all authority that was given (well apart from direct orders from Captain Glain and Captain Santi of course).

3 years later, Jess and Morgan got an unwelcome surprise when Morgan found out she was pregnant. Abortion was never an option for them however Morgan had major anxiety and stress during most of the pregnancy, so much so that medicas started worrying about the baby’s welfare. Alice Brightwell, with all of her cousins, aunt’s and uncles, had a higher level of protection than the high garda elite. She held her morals close to her but still knows how to get what she wants. The boys would never admit it but she (along with liam) are the brains behind most of their plans but the first one to duck out as she’d never be caught doing something as naughty as that. She’s a very free range child personality wise and adapts an auror similar to hippies with her constant calmness. Her love of art and lessened passion for learning has helped her focus on a career as an artist, frequently painting out scenes from the stories her parents would tell her about the war.

Glain & Thomas

Lets get things clear, these two are not dating. Neither of them see eachother as anything more than co parents and has no sexual/ romantic feelings towards eachother.

Glain quickly becomes a favourable Captain in the high garda, falling deep into Santis old shoes while simultaneously wearing in some new ridges. When here lieutenant falls pregnant, Glain starts to notice her deteriorating health as time passes. It’s obvious she won’t survive the pregnancy and lieutenant Upchurch knew this, hence declaring the god parents earlier on. Thomas had been a dear friend of hers for years, originally meeting in a cafe and ending up at a festival later that same day. When considering god parents, Glain and Thomas were her first choice and a few minutes after the birth, she passed peacefully knowing her daughter was in good hands. Seren Schreiber-Wathen is a fiery haired girl who takes after her god mothers bluntness and god fathers heart of gold. She’s the most well rounded of the offspring and with the help of Noah, she keeps them all in line. She aspires to be a teacher just like Uncle Wolfe but with a less direct approach to eliminating postulants and making sure none of her students die
