i see where you're going with this. i think my first thought on how to get this to work in some way, shape, or form would be this:

in the books, Stratt says that she will most definitely end up in prison for life because of her "gross overreach" on the entire mission. so, let's roll with Stratt does go to prison very shortly after the Hail Mary is sent off, lets say a year. maybe the governments of the world form a new coalition in her place and say "the Hail Mary is TOO MUCH of a hail mary, lets make a brand new mission" to which reader, who would then be around Grace's age, is picked to be sent on said mission. i think with a starting point somehow like THAT we could definitely get this idea to work

my only thing is reader and Ryland would probably, TECHNICALLY, have to be a bit of an age gap...and by a bit technically they'd have an extensive age gap. let me science this out, walk with my nerd brain

Earth is 11.9 lightyears from Tau Ceti, and at the speed the Hail Mary was traveling it took Ryland about 4 years (that he experienced) to get there, but Earth experienced somewhere in the 12-13 range for years because of time dilation. there was someone on Reddit who worked out the math, but Erid would end up being about 10 light years from Tau Ceti, meaning travel time to Tau Ceti would take Ryland and Rocky about 3 years, and Erid would experience around 11. So technically, Ryland by the time he gets to Erid, is around 24-26 years older than when he left, but because of time dilation he doesn't look like he's aged that long but he technically has. all of this to say that if reader and Ryland were the same age when he was sent on the mission, reader would be MUCH older. if they weren't, you'd be sending someone that's already 24-26 years younger than Ryland because Earth wouldn't send anyone out there until the Beatles got back. so reader's travel to Erid would cross 16 ish light years from Earth, meaning they would experience around 4.5 years while Earth and Erid experience 17 during reader's travels

ik it was a sweet & fluffy fic but my angst-loving brain can’t help but think about what would happen in that verse once ryland is called to work on project hail mary and eventually taken away from reader… how he’d be so devasted thinking he’d never see her again… how reader wouldn’t believe the government’s lies that ryland chose to go on the mission bc she knows he’d never leave her…

Look, every now and then I indulge in some angst, but I can never make myself write angst if it DOESN'T end with a happy ending cause I hate being sad at the end of things. BUT...this doesn't mean I haven't thought about what would happen with these two after the entire mission thing goes down. Take a dive into my brain below:

When Ryland first wakes up and is trying to figure out where he is in space

"Operation GO HOME in effect!" Ryland Grace hung off the pilot's chair, one hand steadying him against the wall of the ship, as he tried not to activate the ship again into believing he was the pilot. His long hair whipped around as he moved frantically, hitting him in the face with every move he made. "Invalid operation," "Okay, uh, call Houston?" the ship didn't respond to his command, another groan falling from his lips. He swung around, taking hold of one of the control panels and finally getting a good look at the vastness of space before him, and a single glowing object. "AH HA! That's the sun! What are we, like Neptune-ish?" He balanced himself once again across the control panel, vigorously spinning the little control panel under his palm as he tried to gauge how close he was to Earth. But it kept going, and going, and going. By the time he finally found Earth, realization dawned on him. "That's not our sun. T-That's not our..." The Sun. That word was stuck in his head, bouncing between the walls. It was like an immense pressure, like his brain was grasping at something in the distance, trying to cling to something it couldn't remember. The Sun. The Sun. Our Sun...his Sun. “Alright, kids. Your gorgeous teacher here is the Sun,” "The Sun is the Earth’s entire reason for existing. The Sun gives the Earth life. The Sun is the reason the world is beautiful,” “Without the Sun…the Earth would be nothing,” There it was, like a picture finally coming into focus. Those eyes he knew so well, the ones ingrained into his brain for life. The laugh that used to distract him at every single moment, the same one he always strived to hear. Those hands, that ones that slotted perfectly into his, that would hold onto him in every setting. You. "...oh god,"

WHEN DID YOU START WRITING?

I've been writing fanfiction since I was 10/11/12 years old, somewhere in there, but I had been reading it for longer (but I probably shouldn't have been lmao). It all started with a very terrible Niall Horan fic that I wrote on Wattpad that you will never find because I scrubbed it from the internet, and then it moved onto a Walking Dead fic for Carl Grimes that was ALSO terrible but it's still up till this day (please don't go read it, it's that bad but I was 12 writing it every day after school so)

I feel like I'm going to sound self-centered saying this, but you guys on here show my fics SO much love across the board that I really don't think there is one that's underappreciated or deserves a little more love. I'm incredibly proud of everything that I've ever written

I'll give you both: little Mika was fucking OBSESSED with Jimmy Neutron. Apparently, I had my aunt buy me a life-size Jimmy Neutron plush at the mall, and I carried it around holding his hand. On the famous side, it was Chris Evans, so I've been in love with that man since I was like 5 years old watching Fantastic Four lol. I will give a shoutout to Tobey's Spider-Man/Peter Parker, though, because I did love him

Oh I'll shout it from the rooftops lmao. Again, I am so so so SO proud of everything I have written because it's something that I made, something my brain came up with, and I put the time and effort into doing it. Fanfiction is never something to be ashamed of, it's art, whether you think it's incredibly well done or not (please know this only applies to fics written by PEOPLE and not shitty AI)
