I adore Pip and Seras’ dynamic, and I don’t think it’s talked about nearly enough in the fandom. Seras is the most human vampire there is, from start to finish. In losing the final part of her humanity due to Pip’s sacrifice, she ties herself to that humanity forever by taking in the only man who treated her like a human during her fledgling phase. In a way, she will always carry a piece of her humanity with her for eternity, and Pip will always be fulfilled with her as her partner and familiar. He admitted that he loved fighting for the hell of it, no? That’s why he and his family were mercenaries. Now, he can do that for eternity at Seras’ side. It’s a lovely conclusion to their journeys as characters, which was wonderfully presented during their fight with the Captain.
Speaking of the Captain, OH MY GOSHHHH I NEEDED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS GUY. He’s such a sheer force of nature, and Millennium's supposed ‘trump card’, a mirror to both Alucard and Anderson, and yet, we barely get to see anything of him outside of the Dawn and his fight with Pip and Seras. His little character moments are all the more special because of that, though, like his interactions with Schrödinger, or that smile he gives as he dies to Seras. I believe that he wanted to die to another true monster, which is why he let Seras beat him, but not Walter, but that’s a whole other post for another day. d:
Alucard is a freak. We all know this. Dare I say that matching his freak is the entire goal of every other oppositional force in the series. But I have to wonder, does he ever drop that freak outside of his serious moments? Probably not, but it’d be interesting to see him have a true casual interaction with someone. The closest thing we got was that conversation he had with Walter before recovering his orders to go to Rio de Janeiro.
Walter watching Integra get Alucard that luxurious-ass penthouse knowing that it’d get shot up and put on the news like 5 minutes after he’d be checking in is funny as hell. Although, maybe he suggested it to her? And for that very reason, no less. I’d figure that Integra would want Alucard to be positioned somewhere more covert for what she originally thought was going to be an intel collection operation. Maybe Walter made a little suggestion under another little suggestion from Millennium?
Walter boasts the highest amount of glove changes throughout the entire cast. He gets black, brown and white throughout each episode he appears in, and he gets his fingerless gloves in his final fight. I thought that was interesting to mention considering his weapon of choice. Maybe his gloves are more prone to damage due to his wires wearing them down?
I adore Heinkel and Yumie. Just had to put it out there. And Maxwell in Crossfire. In Ultimate? I like his character. Do I like the man himself? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I want to repeatedly dunk him into an industrial-grade container of McDonald’s Sprite. You don’t know that.
More 2001 appreciation please! While I don’t have as much to say about it in terms of writing for the main cast, (aside from Integra because holy hell,) the direction and general vibe of the series is unmatched. Everything oozes with style, and the Gonzo-exclusive characters were fairly interesting. They die like 30 minutes after their introduction every time, but they’re fun! I really like Helena as a concept. I wish her and Alucard got to speak, or at least have him mention her at some point in time. Seras is an absolute gem in this series, and I genuinely prefer some of her characterization in the Gonzo anime. Not all of it, but a good amount, honestly. Also, no evil Walter! The downside is that he’s not really much of a character in the Gonzo series outside of the Valentine Brothers’ invasion, but he’s still a treat to see in action. Also, the fits??? Everyone had that shit on in Gonzo, especially Seras.
Rip’s entire concept is amazing to me. She’s my favorite one-off villain in Ultimate next to Jan. Also, Walter definitely knew her due to her appearance in The Dawn. Alucard at the very least knew of her, too, which adds another layer of mystery and relation back to Rip’s “Der Frieshcutz” motif.
And, last but not least, Zorin and the Doktor. Zorin has a scene where Pip decks her with a plank of wood. I adore that scene. Please go watch it somewhere. As for the Doktor, he is such a weird freak. I hate him. I want to put him in a blender. That being said I find him very interesting and I think it’s hilarious that he just…created Schrödinger somehow. Because he can just do that. No “we need the body of Mina Harker to extract Dracula’s essence and create these FREAK chips to make artificial vampires which can only do this this and this”—nuh uh. He can just make a concept. And make it a catboy no less. What an odd creature of a guy.
