...Over and over again. My seventh key reminds me I'm not perfect, because actually perfect does not exist! We tend to imagine the best path in parenting looks like a rather straight line, from point A to Z. The pressure is high, and it triggers intense shake, guilt, fear, anger at yourself or your own upbringing... Until some give up on parenting to their standards, give up on themselves and on their children. Those painful, judgmental feelings are simply not helpful, but love, tenderness, appreciation, are. I know, you've heard the "I'm just saying this [insert negativity] to help you get better at it!" but it's way easier to improve when you're energized by love, recognition, support. Who is gonna start having your back? Huh, yourself. Me too. Because you want to be the parent you want to be, you can. Start siding with the best of your actions and visions, and welcome the mistakes like interesting chances to grow. The best course of action looks like a decreasing saw, too far on the right, oops, go left, too far on the left, oops, go right... Commit to readjust, decide and take daily or weekly some time to realign with your values, and be sure you're going somewhere! I imagine sometimes my children, as teens, accusing me of this or that. And I feel empathy, I acknowledge their suffering, I don't have a need to justify myself. It's ok that I meant one thing, and they lived another. I love you anyway! I'm pretty sure that they'd feel understood, accepted as they are, and they might even think that I sucked, or I rocked, as a mum. We'll be fine, in the present. How do you talk to yourself when you do something against your values? Do you berate yourself, do you lay blame on other people/things? How can you find the love and energy to do better next time? Give yourself unlimited credit, and keep using it to grow and nurture!
