1965, Roberto Matta, Vietnam by R.M.Lenox Via Flickr: From the museum label: Chilean painter Roberto Matta was associated with the surrealist movement in the 1930s. He lived in France, Spain, and Italy, and later worked with art students in Cuba in the 1960s. He became increasingly politically engaged and expressed this in his visual work. According to Matta, "Resistance is in each of us. We resist by exercising our creativity. That is true poetry-when we seek new comparisons, other ways of looking and conceiving of things."
