Zen, it’s your first birthday today.

It’s my daughter’s first birthday.

I never even thought I’d ever even be saying those words, without me having my Grammy first.

But Allah, has plans for us we never know about it.

Your Mena used to always tell me that.

But I got my awards; I got my acknowledgment; I got my chance.

And I did damn good, with it.

The awards; whether I got them, didn’t get them…not of that means more to me than you.

Not of that means, more to me than seeing you outgrown me.

seeing you do more than me.

hearing about you seeing more than me.

learn more, love more, live more, experience more, accomplish more than me and your mother combined. that’s what I want for you.

To be the best you can be at any time you can be.

Even when you’re at your lowest, when you nowhere to turn, no more real friends, when you feel like me or your mother don’t understand you, when you don’t understand yourself, when your dreams aren’t coming true, when that stupid boy tries to break your heart (and daddy breaks his jaw)..whatever it is that ever makes you feel like you’re aren’t good enough; that’s when you use what you can use to dig deep inside yourself and push thru whatever obstacle is in your way.

That’s being the best you can be at any time.

I don’t want you feel like you can’t ever be you.

Like you can’t be unsure of things, like you have to everything figured out.

Because you can be and you really don’t.

Most of the best things in life come out of patience, love and one good “you know what, fuck it..let’s just do it” moment.

That’s how you got here.

So be gentle with you. The world won’t be.

Be content with yourself and admire the idea of growth and progression.

Those two things will always keep you getting better in any aspect of life and that’s what you need and should want.

A solid foundation is a rarity these days.
