Gris still wants to do contests with her so they just find a workaround by summoning a few ghost types and registering their human avatar as a contestant. Akari signing up for a Clever Contest and getting a mini heart attack when she sees one of her opponents is a familiar blond goth who somehow roped a Duskull into helping with these shenanigans.

Honestly I was thinking that too! Especially since a lot of my headcanon backstory for Dawn/Akari revolves around her having trauma with the dance aspects of contests specifically (her mom was basically a Dance Mom) and that's kinda unique to Sinnoh contests. I can see her deciding in her mid-late teens that she wants to try contests as a sort of reclamation thing and going to Hoenn instead. No dancing, and no Mom.

I'm also thinking it could be part of a bigger backstory thing with her where her original attempt at a pokémon journey kinda. Crashed and burned due to a lot of factors outside her control, so she never made it past 4-5 badges. But she took some time off, went traveling to other regions, did the contest circuit in Hoenn and all that. And now she's back in Sinnoh in her early twenties to pick up where she left off. Finally get those last few badges and beat Cynthia like she's been dreaming of since she was a kid. (Maybe do a few Sinnoh contests along the way just because she can.)
