Well, heâd thought he could get away with it. Danny sighed, the smile fading from his lips as he did as he was asked. Sometimes â rarely â it was easy to fool himself into thinking that he could still be completely open with Saraya. Sheâd been the girl heâd told everything to â almost everything â for so long that it was hard to remember that they werenât that way anymore. âLet me guess: weâre not friends, we just have a kid together, and anything beyond that isnât possible anymore. Weâre keeping it civil for the kid and the conversation we had on the trip was a fluke, a mistake, whatever you wanna call it. Am I close?â
âIt has nothing to do with you,â Saraya replied in an attempt to calm him. As she gathered her thoughts, she tapped her fingers against the bottle in her hand. It remained unopened and she could feel the tips of her fingers begin to tingle with numbness. âIâm just so tired of being alone,â she began slowly. âI know we were together for a while and I should be happy to have the time to be on my own, but I donât like it. And that probably says something about me, but I miss having someone to cuddle with when I watch tv or read. I miss having someone to come home to.â She was grateful that heâd honored her request to look away. There was a part of her that wasnât sure sheâd be able to say the words if she was looking in his eyes. âI guess all Iâm saying is that Iâm being open to the idea of meeting someone. Not now obviously, but I just need you to be supportive of it. I need you to be my supportive best friend and not my jealous ex-husband.â
