Letâs play a game called: What in a Sales Photo/Video Can Make You Uninterested in a Horse
Iâm not talking anything to do with conformationâ Iâm talking turnout, rider, etc.
What are the little details that make you scroll past an ad instead of really considering the horse? What are the things that are so glaringly distracting that they take away from the horse?
Tbh when the rider isnt presented neatly, like im not looking for show level presentation, but clean boots, decent jodhpurs/jeans, collared shirt, and a good seat on the horse
Also if photos included are of the horse in a weird place im the stride, like youâll get photos of the canter just before the leading foreleg hits the ground/just after inside hind and outside fore hit the ground and it just looks whack. Like learn to take photos on burst mode and pick the one that looks best pls
Chris what do you consider a decent seat for a sales photo/videoâ like what if itâs a young horse or what if itâs a horse being flatted in jumping tack versus a dressage saddle?
Looks like weâre all in agreement on dirty horses and bad quality photos!
No transitions on a video (this is a BIG red flag for me)
A few 15 second clips stapled together - now Iâm suspicious that your horse canât keep their shit together for more than 15 sec.
Only straight sides
Horses advertised as quiet because they have a 5 year old child on them - put an amateur on them who is asking them to do stuff but not necessarily correct, then Iâll believe its quiet
Photos or videos which show excessive tail flicking, and definitely no contact issues - especially if itâs the cover photo on a website, if itâs only one on fb then mesh, but if itâs the only one I see then Iâm way more likely to keep scrolling
As Chris said, bad angles or shots of the stride. Arthurâs photo was terrible - he was advertised for THREE MONTHS before I actually clicked on his ad because there was nothing else left. And then I called straight away, but the cover photo was awful.
Video taken fucking horizontally (Justin ily but WHY)
I would assume anything with POA is 40k + - if you want 20k, dont put POA, cos I wonât ask
NO WALK FOOTAGE WHY
Phone photos or screenshots, bad lighting - not enough to turn off but enough that I would be more likely to haggle cos I assume they are unprofessional. Same with poorly turned out riders and horses.
Bonuses -
Videos which show the horse being brushed, tacked up, long videos with few cuts (when I advertised chanel I did a highlights real then had longer 60+ second sections (But thatâs cos Iâm looking at temperament a lot)
Slow Motion. The second a video does slo-mo I đ and move on.
Transitions are huge, especially between gaits for young horses.
Not showing both directions??
3 minutes of the same thing. Like I get it, the horse can trot to the left.
A whole bunch of photos before the video starts. Just show the video, I saw the photos in the ad.
People who donât list height, training level, age, price, or location. I donât get it, are you trying to sell a horse or ???
I am IN VAIN trying to keep this all on one so itâs easier to follow for people reading on the dash. đ
@transequeerstrian âagreed, Iâm also like very biased because of where I work but when I see a rider perched on their pelvis and the horse is being listen in the 20k+ range itâs a super turn-off. Like if you canât sit on the horse and let it actually show off then what else is wrong with the way you ride and train? If youâre shelling out five figures on a horse then you best not immediately have to rectify basic training issues.
The POA thing is interestingâ Iâm also not someone who would inquire on a horse who was listed as POA because I assume itâs super expensive or comes with conditions (ex. You can buy my horse now at a lesser price but I continue to campaign it for 1 year until I retire it.)
I agree with most of what was said above - dirty or scruffy horses in particular - even if they have a winter coat, I wanna see that youâve at least given them a brush, clipped the bridle path etc. I would expect a photo of at least each gait and the horse stood up square, I hate when all the photos of the horse standing still are on an angle or rocked forward or have a leg sticking out, I want to be able to see what the horseâs conformation looks like.Â
POA is definitely a turn off, I always assume if youâre not gonna put the price on the ad I canât afford it.
If itâs going for more than like, 6-7k I expect to see either its show record or its pedigree - if Iâm buying a dressage horse or a jumper or whatever, I want some guarantee it can do what it says on the box in a competative environment.
And photos at a weird point in the stride like Chris said, trot photos with the horse leaning forward or the knees lifted rather than at the extent of the stride and canter photos when theyâre on the most downhill point of the movement or whatever, they just look weird. I spent ages taking sales photos for a stud one summer and those were a few of the things I picked up from that.
Competing 1.20m!! All photos at 80cm
Watermarked professional photos. Don't be that guy
Jumping photos taken awkwardly (take off, really uneven legs etc)
Draw reins, "on the bit" where the head is yanked in and the hind end dragging 8 feet behind
It's a hard Goob life
He kills me
Poor Derp is going through an awkward stage

LGâs first freejumping attempt
When my girl shows up on my dash đ
If anyone was wondering what I was talking about with a recent-ish post about people advertising their 20+yr old thoroughbreds on facebook, something I see all the time and absolutely hate.
If you canât offer a horse a retirement home, figure it out BEFORE itâs too old to reasonably rehome, ESPECIALLY if you have limited time to shift it. If you canât do this, or your circumstances change unexpectedly, have the guts to give the horse a quiet dignified and peaceful death at home. If this was an occasional thing it wouldnât be an issue, but I see ads like this almost dailyâŚthatâs a lot of elderly, high maintenance horses needing homes where they might be rideable for a few months or a year or two, tops. The best case scenario for this horse is some softhearted person gives him a nice retirement and doesnât leave him out in a back paddock without proper care to meet his ever-growing needs. The much more likely scenario is a long, lonely trip to the slaughterhouse, where he will die alone, afraid, and in unfamiliar surroundings. After a racing career and a sporthorse career where he gave a lot of people his all, I think he deserves better than the uncertainty and high potential for an unhappy and scary end to his life that heâs just been thrown into.
All of this ^ I'm incredibly lucky that my parents have 14 acres where Gandy and Jerry can both hang out on the grass forever but if my circumstances ever changed and I couldn't offer them safe retirement I would put them down immediately. I will never understand why putting a horse down in a paddock where it is comfortable with people it knows and trusts is seen as such an unsavoury end but sending them off somewhere for free where their outcome is likely to be a lot worse is "giving them a chance"
Prim is over the pregnancy life
Seriously guys.
My horses are all in fully horse safe paddocks where they're agitated. Prim is due to foal in 6 weeks and has somehow sliced her lip.
