heartstopper also uses blue and yellow as color code for their characters and it’s specifically placed in the backgrounds and in their costume choices because it matters. its a show about teen romance so when you watch it and see blue and yellow props and sets and costumes it helps the viewer understand that they are meant to be together, we are rooting for them because they are everywhere in that universe.

stranger things is not about romance, but mike and will as a duo have the color coding there that, frankly, the other characters don’t. that’s why it stands out so much. color coding could be argued for other characters, but not in the same way blue and yellow is used in pairing. using those colors together is purposeful signals to the viewers to pay attention to these characters, the environments tell us that they are an important pair of characters. even without a romantic aspect, their friendship falls flat at the end. there should have been something that would payoff what was promised in the visual storytelling.

their bond as friends needed to play a bigger part in the end of things. they were so close with the sorcer episode, that was a perfect setup for their friendship leaving a physical impact on their situation, but it didn’t carry. in the end, they don’t grow or change. they are stagnant, they’ve always been best friends, reiterating it for the audience one last time ultimately means nothing and really just wasted time. is it closure? maybe for some. it kind of just confuses the general audience more because why give them a final scene together that doesn’t actually finalize either of their character developments.
