Sanghyun had to drag the fan by their sleeve as they shifted in front of him but still talking to the member sitting right next to him. He pretended to be annoyed while the audience was laughing at the playful act. He opened the album and found the note on the center, another song suggestion question. He thought about it hard since Sanghyun believed there were not many recent songs he had listened to repeatedly. “I’m not sure what to choose,” he confessed as the fan caught him struggling to write down the answer. After a moment, he carved the answer on the paper and the fan agreed that it was the best answer.

“Who do you want to sing the song to?” he teased. Sanghyun saw her glancing at the member next to him and he let out a snort, a reaction to her honesty. “I’m rejected,” he jokingly whined and signed the paper as the fan apologized to Sanghyun in a playful manner.

Once in a while, there were fans who came up to him and spoke about their personal struggle. At times it was a heartbreaking story that Sanghyun couldn’t help to comfort them, another time it could be funny anecdotes they experienced while the group was indirectly involved. But there were also times when they asked for advice which required Sanghyun to rack his wits since he loved to genuinely help to solve their problems. But when it was about romance, Sanghyun was not sure if he could give the best solution.

“Wouldn’t it be better if you just ask them directly?” he turned the rhetorical question. “If I were you, I would just tell them that I like them and I want to go out with them sometime. Whether it’s a success or not, at least you will get over the stress sooner.” The fan nodded and abruptly asked Sanghyun to go out with her. “You sneaky little--” Sanghyun was dumbfounded how things turned back at him. “I gotta ask your mom first if they’re up for their daughter to date an idol.”

A fan in her college alma mater jacket approached his table with pride on her face. Sanghyun noticed it was a uniform from a prestigious college, so he complimented her for her achievement. She bragged about being happy turning into an adult and Sanghyun found it adorable. They had a long conversation before Sanghyun switched his attention back to the notes she left on the pages of the album and stopped at one question that’s directed at him. He gave it a thought for a few seconds, but then throwing the question back at the fan. “We’ve done cute to cool, what do you think we should do next?” 

In a low voice, she whispered to him: sexy. He cracked up at her answer, still thinking that she was cute. “Sexy? Sexy. I guess we’ll go with sexy next. I’m not at the age to act cute anymore, aren’t I?” he teased the fan who reminded Sanghyun a lot of his younger sister. “But we’ll see. Usually, what Inpulses want is what they get, right?” Sanghyun wiggled his eyebrows.

Sanghyun greeted the fans with a smile and opened the pages of the album quietly. “is it your first time here?” he asked, noticing how nervous the young fan looked. They were surprised that he could recognize a new face, but it was easy for Sanghyun to do so after doing the event numerous times. He confessed there were people who came on every event but the ones that caught his attention the most were the new faces. Still, he was grateful for both sides. Sanghyun stopped on a marked page and read the question. He scribbled quickly before handed the album back to the fan, wishing them to see him again on the next signing event.

He waited for the person in front of him to open the book and Sanghyun mouthed the song playing in the background. When the page was ready, he read the note left on the paper and listened to the fan talking about her male friend who wanted to come to the event but too shy and scared to be called weird. “Why? We do love male fans too. They’re like hidden gems. We spotted some of them during the concert and it got us so excited. And I noticed they like us for the choreography, which is nice to know,” Sanghyun explained, asking her to pass the message to her male friend that he would be glad to see him next time. “Tell him we’ll be waiting.”

the pretty fan came up to the stage and she took his breath away for a moment. It was rather hard to keep himself content on that situation, but everyone would be weirded out if Sanghyun showed favoritism. He sipped on his drink and welcomed her, taking the album once she offered it. He checked on the pages when she muttered the question, which made Sanghyun almost burst laughing at the straightforward question. “Requirements? It sounds like you’re about to install a game on your computer. that’s what the kids would always say ‘what’s the requirement for the computer for it to run smoothly?’” he teased. While signing the page, Sanghyun gave her a short answer. “they just have to like me. Nobody else but me. I think it’s already difficult to do so.”

It was a strange feeling to note that the silence between the air filled the gaps, consuming the slow hums of the cafe music. Something weighed heavily over the person in front of him, almost dissociating from himself in a dazed haze. Taejins eyes carefully peered over, silently noting the fidgets of Sanghyun’s fingers, his response was plan and lacked the proper emotion Taejin was expecting. He was the kind of person who fidgeted, playing with his fingers or the wrappers from a straw - always a sense of uneasiness. The response conjured up his soul into a tight rope - balancing the act between confusion and annoyance. Was it that displeasurable to run into him at a cafe? 

His long fingers tampering with the now formed water droplets on the surface of his cup and gently rattling the ice inside, Taejin replied, “You know, you’re a hell of a lot happier when you see me at a music show than when you just saw me now. What’s gotten you in this mood?” His eyes grazed back over to him. The frigid coldness that lay between the two was a master conversation of awkwardness and an inability to navigate conversation, a state of instability. Of course, Sanghyun had always been the polite quiet type, which peaked Taejin’s interest at first. Despite the first few remarks he had grunted during their first encounter, Sanghyun had always smoothed things over with his nice proper manners. However, Taejin had always been overwhelmed with a sense of confusion, questioning why Sanghyun had always chosen his words with the same hollow eyed expression. 

Wanting to break away from the conversation that was evidently going nowhere, Taejin joked, “Was it the bad comments on some article written about you or is it girl problems today?”. He pulled his arms around himself, with his hands placed on the crooks of his elbows. Diffusing the tension, he added, “Regardless, it’s seollal soon. Do you have any plans?”

“No. There’s no bad articles or problems with girls,” Sanghyun released a peal of dry laughter at the question. “I’m lucky since I don’t have both. But really, it has nothing to do with them. It’s just...” He stopped himself, feeling sour how Taejin could read him so well; although he seldom whined about his problem, Sanghyun was more transparent than he ever thought he was. His body language and gloomy face often translated as someone who was always tense, and they were right half of the time, but mostly he was content. His trainer told him to pull those lips muscles up more often instead of glaring, but Sanghyun had no reason to be smiley all the time. 

“I was just surprised to see you here, that’s all,” Sanghyun added. He stopped himself for a moment because being honest didn’t seem necessary when Sanghyun wanted to widen the gap between them. if he was mean enough, Sanghyun would nitpick any bad traits the man had and used it against him, but he knew they were too trivial to use as excuses to hate him. Sanghyun just wished he could stop seeing his late brother’s expression whenever he faced Taejin.

1.what is your goal for this year/next year?

He exchanged a high-five with the enthusiastic fan who claimed it was their first fan-sign to attend. “Really? I hope next time I will see you again,” Sanghyun said, but they quickly retorted that it was impossible since it took a lot to win the entry ticket. “it doesn’t have to be this event. I could see you on the street or during the promotion week. We have a lot of chances to see each other again, okay?” And they shared another high-five.

To their question, Sanghyun took the time to answer the question while he was signing the album. “For this year, I want to do some cooking-related things. Also…it seems impossible, but publishing a book?” he was hesitant to say it, but the fan seemed interested in his answer that she jumped ups and downs while shaking Sanghyun’s hands. “But I don’t know, though!” he cracked up. “We’ll see. It will take a lot of my time to do better in those fields, but I’ll give it a try. Somehow it feels burdensome, especially the latter.” She said she would be at least ten books to give Sanghyun the support and he found it ridiculous after what she said about attending another fansign. “Hey, you just said even this event is impossible and you’re going to buy 10 books?!”

Sanghyun shared some snacks with the member next to him while waiting for the next in the queue to come to his table. While munching on the sweet, a young man who seemed still in his teen came forward. His appearance excited Sanghyun since it was rather rare to see a young male come to the event. He asked for his name and wrote it down on the paper. They began to talk about how the teen wanted to be a professional dancer and Sanghyun encouraged him to pursue his dream. Although his favorite member was someone else in the group, Sanghyun was okay with that fact and teased the fan about the said member by telling a fake fact. As he set his hand on one marked page, he received the verbal question from the fan to kill time before he moved to the next member. “Recently? It’s not really a new song but there’s time I listen to San’s Yanghwa Bridge on repeat,” he answered. The fan was elated and agreed on his choice. “Right? It was nice to listen to it during the winter too.”

20. can you give some inspiring words for someone going through a hard time?

the next one in line was a young lady in her early 20s but looked gloomy with her messy hair. Sanghyun asked for her permission to neat her hair and gave her a thumb up in the end when she looked more decent. She didn’t talk much and let Sanghyun sign her album in silence, but there was still time until she moved to the side. He wondered if she was in the right state of mind since those eyes were recognizable, but had no courage to ask. Sanghyun just tapped her hand gently and asked if she already ate. The lady shook her head which caused Sanghyun to draw more concern as the event happened after the sun had set. Instead of replying to his concern, she asked Sanghyun to give her some encouragement, since things didn’t happen so well on her side lately. She handed Sanghyun a piece of a sealed envelope which she requested him to read later, and he promised to read it once he’s home.

“One thing that my father used to say to me when I was at my lowest was ‘the sun is not born to be defeated’,” he started, reaching out to hold her hand. “you see, that the sun is just massive ball of gas but it gives purpose to life. It comes back to give light every morning and kill the darkness. I think what he was trying to say is that if you can’t see the greatness in you, then be the greatest to someone else, and then maybe that you will see that you’re more valued than who you think you are. 

23. what place do you want to travel to the most?

it was one of the most common questions Sanghyun had received whenever he was in a public event, but somehow he always had a different answer every time. He could have written down a default answer to make things easier, but there were too many places he had not yet visit, aside from the big cities in foreign countries that were already familiar to his knowledge. Playing with his pen while his head was processing which answers he wanted to use for the written question attached to the paper, Sanghyun thought of places that were dear to his heart and would not mind visiting time and time again. His fingers stopped fiddling on the pen and wrote down the answer. He drew a little smile and a house next to his short answer.

4. if you spent one day with a fan, where would you go and what would you do?

Sanghyun greeted the young woman in front of him with a smile as he took the album and checked the page where he could drop his signature. As he flipped the page, he noticed a note attached to the paper. Reading it carefully, Sanghyun rolled his eyes up to think the good answer for the question. He took the pen, scribbled his autograph on one corner then going back to the written question.

As the fan read his answer, she further questioned why he chose the specific place. “Because it’s indoor but also outdoor, get it?” Sanghyun joked, tugging a cheeky smile as if he was proud of his teasing. She protested on Sanghyun’s lame answer which only cracked him up even more. 

25. what is the first thing you think of when someone mentions your fans?

The next person came into the line greeted Sanghyun first and handed him a headband. He willingly put it on and caused the crowd to cheer at the adorable look. The fan began to share her experience about what happened in the community, including the bad part where she had to argue with a fan from another group. Sanghyun nodded at her story attentively, reaching out for her hand and giving it a light squeeze. She wondered if Sanghyun could spare a thought of his own fans and the question got him thinking. 

“So far, I’ve never heard any intense story about you guys. It’s understandable if you got passionate about us but,” Sanghyun paused, letting out a soft hum.  “But, I’m sorry that you had to go through that. And also thank you for standing up for us. You’ve taken care of us well, but I hope you also take care of yourself, okay?” He patted her head lightly and thanked her for coming to the event.

27. what are your recent wishes?

Sanghyun flipped the pages and noticed the post-it-note covered his face on the paper. He chuckled and whined at the fan why she attached the paper like that. Because your face is distracting, she said. Sanghyun snorted. “That’s a compliment, right?” he teased. He read down the question and gave it a long thought. He twirled the pen between his fingers while thinking of the answers, eliminating any materialistic things in case she would interpret it as if Sanghyun was asking her to buy them for him. He marked the first bullet and continued on listing his wishes.
