Struggle from 2007. I wanted to observe as hard as I could and show what I could do by drawing such details lol. I like this one just coz I remember trying really hard.

Old drawing from 2005, right before I started my high school. . I went to an art high school in Korea called Korea Animation High school. I had to take an intense drawing test competing with many other students to get in the school. After I got accepted, I was pretty tired of the entrance exam and constant pressure, lost joy of drawing but made just obligatory ugly drawings.. I thought something was wrong and needed to be changed. Back in those days, I just became a huge fan of Princess Mononoke and Studio Ghibli. (It’s actually ‘Spirited Away’ which grasped and started me to walk on this path.) I just loved animals and concept of princess mononoke, how strongly emphasizes harmony of humanity and nature, and had to draw something I loved so much. This was probably the first drawing that I was able to realize the joy of drawing ever since being aware of what I wanted to do. Btw I used a nickname ‘khawa’ (meaning river in japanese). It’s embarrassing how I embedded that nickname forever in this drawing!!🤣 .

Old painting from 2007 “Memory of A Dream” water color, acrylic, and color pencils. This was one of my favorite works in the past. Not only because I tried hard working on this but also I was asked to draw my favorite things that will show my own world. Sometimes, I had a dream about swimming with a dolphin in the water that reflected the sky and the milky way. That was just so fantastic, imagining that always gives me the chills, which I would love to have such dreams whenever. I basically put anything I loved .. dolphin, water, horse(aqua unicorn), floating planets, the galaxy, stars etc. I was inspired by a Japanese independent film maker(can’t rememberer his name rn 😭, will add later if I can remember) his exploration of imaginative world. It is a privilege for the artists having such a world. . .

Old from 2006. Acrylic painting, theme was light and shadow. I painted my dad, which ended up becoming one of my calarts portfolio pieces. This was pretty much the first painting I got a compliment from my teacher back in high school. I thought I had no talent back then lol. . .

Being an artist sometimes is like a romantic journey. I’m proud to be an artist who can express a way of love however I want and capture the living moment. When I tried to draw this, I had neither a proper sketchbook nor any other art supplies, but only a sheet of paper for note taking and reading materials from my church seminar. I strongly felt I wanted to draw at that time though I wasn’t really prepared. I just spontaneously used them for drawing and somehow it worked out just fine lol. Guess what you need to create art is just strong instinct and focus.. Why did I call it a romantic journey? Well, I think that strong motivation, something unexpected can be categorized as romantic to me lol. Besides, the act you draw because you love that moment and have to express your emotion somehow, would be similar to having affection for someone. That’s romantic so to speak lol. It’s been a while since I did any sort of outside sketching. Missed how it felt. I should prolly do this more often. . .

Long time no figure drawing. I don’t even remember when the last time I went to figure drawing class was ..probably more than a year ago.. of course I got so rusty, maybe I forgot how to draw plus that dress made everything extra tricky! 😂 The model lady was pretty cool tho. Feel always guilty not drawing enough outside work. But now trying to be more discipline.. . .
