inspired by @wanderleave and her ballet fic commentary, iβm writing some notes on swarm! if thereβs anything you want to know or hear more about - why did you make X choice, what inspired this, anything else you can think of - nowβs your chance to ask and iβll do my best to answer in the commentary notes!
iβm also, as you can see in the pic below, finally taking this opportunity to share what songs i envision as soundtracking specific scenes. up to now, the playlist has just been something iβve noodled on privately but this is the perfect medium to share the songs as they line up with the corresponding moments i intended them to :)

The deal with these reunions is that no one ever really changes.
Thatβs what Drew has long believed, at least. Anna, the former sorority executive councilmember that she is, has always been a hell of an organizer. She has managed to rally people from all corners of the country and from abroad, too, to make their returns to Pittsburgh or to congregate in D.C., and had even mustered an impressive group for one spontaneous weekend in Austin. Sheβs tailored events for them to show off spouses by their sides or arms full of accolades or names appended by shiny new credentials; has delightfully created space for them to slideshow photos fresh from the tail-end of a backpacking trip or other adrenaline rush. But no matter what fresh experiences the members of their med school cohort carry, Drew has found that the people remain, at their core, the same.
Which is the reason he is still, unfortunately for him, nursing what he is embarassed at this age to call a crush on Samira Mohan. And is also the reason why he knows that Samiraβwhen he sees her tonight at the first reunion she has RSVPβed Yes to in yearsβwill look beautiful as she chuckles good-naturedly at his attempts at jokes, and will kindly turn down his offer to buy her next round, but will still clink her glass against his and earnestly ask questions about how heβs liking Mount Sinai. And that after tonight, she will continue to post absolutely nothing gleanable about her life on her Instagramβthe only updates he will be privy to will be on her Pubmed pageβand then maybe, Drew will see her again at the next wedding or reunion, whichever comes first, and the cycle will repeat.
Drew wishes heβd fallen for Anna, with her spreadsheet of nationwide contacts, her penchant for flirting back, and her proximity to New York. Heβs tried dating other people, too, but nothing sticks. He doesnβt change. It isnβt possible. Always, in the back of his mind, a smokescreen of memory provides a daydream of someone he never sees and canβt have.
As soon as he walks into the brewery where Anna has booked out the back room, Drew knows he has made a grave underestimation.
Because of all the people he might have expected could surprise him with a drastic life update, Samira Mohan is fairly near the bottom of that list.
But there she is: standing at one of the tall tables, an oval set in glinting gold on her ring finger and a breath-stealingly handsome older man beside her, whose hand is curved comfortably around her hip as he extends his other to Anna as Samira introduces them. As Drew draws closer, he hears the manβs voice rumble with an indistinct comment in a jocular tone, and then Samira and Anna crease with tickled laughter.
βDrew! You made it,β Anna cries out when heβs near enough, beckoning him into the cluster. He knows itβs no surprise to Anna that heβs hereβheβd RSVPβed dutifully, after all, and he knows sheβd probably crossed her tβs and dotted her iβs half a dozen times before leaving her house todayβbut the way she brightens to make him feel so welcome dissolves all impulse to banter on this point, even in jest.
βIn the flesh,β Drew smiles, embracing her. Sheβs such an amiable personality; Drew really does wish she could have been the one he was still carrying a torch for.
βHey, good to see you,β Samira loops an arm over his shoulder for a brief hug and pulls away with a smile. Drew now notices that its wattage, though still bright and cheerful, is by a hardly-noticeable measure a dimmer version of the one sheβd boasted just moments earlier at the joke he hadnβt heard.
βLikewise,β Drew returns the smile. βWhoβs the arm candy?β he adds, slinging a playful tilt of his chin in the direction of her partner. The man flushes, dipping his head as his eyes crinkle with a modesty Drew can tell heβs not putting on. Damn, heβs thoroughly charmed, and he hasnβt even heard the man speak yet.
βJack, please,β he says, offering his hand to Drew to shake. Itβs as firm as his self-assured gaze; both serve to communicate that he has an accurate reading on the envious waves coursing through Drewβs chest right now, and convey with just as much confidence that Jack is willing to demonstrate a certain possessiveness in order to walk him down.
To a degree, Drew remains certain of his thesis that people are only capable of minor change. Because as the small group of them carry on their conversation, Samira acts the way she has always acted around him.
For a solid portion of the night, Drew mingles. He meets other new spouses, indulges in some close conspiratorial banter with Anna because it feels good to gleam under the easily-given spotlight of her attention, and passes around photos of his new dog, his brotherβs wedding. For a solid portion of the night, Drew is able to forget his bruised ego.
βHey,β he starts. βRishaβs here and weβre talking shop, did you still want toββ
βOh! Yeah, for sure,β Samira nods eagerly. And because, apparently, being wrong once tonight is not enough, she sways in closer to Abbot, lowering her voice to tell him, nearly nose to nose, βIβll be back, okay?β
βOkay,β Abbot says, his voice low, a hand squeezing just above her hip before letting her go, and Drew considers re-evaluating every belief heβs ever held about people and change. Because if Samira Mohan can surprise him like thisβwell, he guesses, itβs a good thing he never went into anthropology.
