hello ladies!! Iām Nashira *big inhale* and Iām an Afro-Caribbean/Southeast Asian/Polynesian nonbinary lesbian (a mouthful, I know ^-^) ā Iām an aspiring poetess and I write about feminism, diaspora, gender & sexuality relative to my culture, chronic illness, and astrology. I post art + poetry to my Instagram and micropoems to my Twitter ā [both are @nashxra]
I would love for more LGBTPoC, esp. Black/Asian/Pacific Islander WLW to engage with my work !! I know this looks rly clout-y, but everything I write, it is in the context of my identity as a Black/brown woman, a WLW, an immigrant/ESL, etc. & so a lot of meaning is lost to those outside of these identities. there isnāt a lot of accessible media exploring these intersections, so Iām hoping you all will help me foster this space. Thank youšÆš²šÆš²! Salamatšµššµš! Faafetaiš¹š»š¹š»!
Happy birthday! I hope that wherever you are today you're surrounded by people who love you and make you feel amazing. And if not, then this is a reminder that you are a wonderful, strong, kind, and talented human being. I know life must have been crazy for you lately, so remember to take care of yourself and to do things that bring you joy. And to hydrate. Have a lovely Monday, Iris.
Hello Iris! I have no idea how you knew it was my birthday but thank you so much! Do you follow me on other social media? Just curious! It seems like weāve been buddies for such a long while, I still feel a bit strange not knowing who you are. I hope youāve been well~ Iāve just been adjusting to post grad life and working! Nothing interest to report on my end hahah. Thank you for always being so kind to me and I sincerely hope to speak with you again soon
progress
Me two months ago: sustained myself purely on apples and peanut butter on a day to day basis. Cried once a day for no reason other than having a hell brain.
Me two days ago: helped my profoundly apraxic and aphasic client say "my name _____" by himself for the first time ever since his stroke. Handed him and his wife tissues so they could wipe their joyous, beautiful tears from their faces.

a couple things happened today
The love of my life, Colin Firth, turned 57 years old
I turned 24 years old (yes, we share the same birthday, only the small matters of 33 years and an ocean separates us)
We impulsively rescued and adopted another cat. Our first cat is not happy at the moment, but he'll get over it
Good day. My last semester of clinic starts tomorrow; here's to a good one hopefully.
Hello, Iris again here. I am so humbled that you remember me, to be honest! I wanted to find out when did I start reading your blog and realized it's been exactly four years (it all began with you posting "What I've Lost"). So happy birthday to that writing and to my following I guess. I don't go on tumblr anymore, and so many things changed in my life. I've lived abroad and found new interests. I've made so many plans and ended up on entirely unexpected paths. 1/3
.
But every other month, sometimes more often, I like to check in here and see how you're doing. Read your words. Relate. Sometimes smile. Or reflect. And if there's nothing new, well then I just hope your master's degree is not killing you, and you're as happy as you can be. You've already accomplished so much! Never forget that. 2/3
.
3/3 As for myself, I'm about to leave France and move to Ireland, so now is a very exciting and stressful time, and your words gave me joy. I wish you all the luck and strength for the year to come. Remember to always take care of yourself. Thank you for everything. Iris
Of course I remember you! How could I not? You humble me with your kindness and your thoughtfulness. I honestly wish that you did have a tumblr or a social media platform of some sort so that I could support you as much as you have supported me over the past 4 years. I remember you mentioning a while ago that you wanted to take me up on a letter; I would be more than happy to write you (if youāre comfortable with it, of course).Ā
In the meantime until you check in again, I hope you have a successful and safe move! Take care and Iām sure Iāll talk to you again soon :)Ā
"My mother has this uncanny ability to uplift me, to empower me, and then remind me of my objectivity, all in the same breath." Wow did that really hit home for me. Thank you. Its been really amazing to follow you and how you've matured over the years. Even though you don't write as much as you used to and your following isn't as big as it used to be, I just want you to know that you're still touching people across the internet, me included. I wish you all the best!
Thank you for standing by me for so long! It continues to astound me that some of you have been around since Iāve started this blog, which was when I was literally 16 years old and had nothing of worth to say. I donāt know what Iāve done or what Iāve written to warrant such a loving little community, but I am so grateful to you.Ā

the difficulties of biculturalism when youāre an only daughter
Does anybody else struggle with reconciling the culture(s) of their parents with American culture? Iāve found that as I have become older and have begun to (believe it or not) come into my own as an adult independent of my parents, that my mother has suddenly started to throw out restrictions and barriers, all in the name of tradition. I feel like this can definitely all be ascribed to the fact that I am an only child, a daughterĀ of marriageableĀ age,Ā and a first generation American citizen. Ā
I had one of the most confusing conversations with her the other day upon which she made a number of really frustrating revelations.Ā
Not allowed to be married until Iām at least 30 years oldĀ
Not allowed to move in with my boyfriend, no matter how much they already like him, until after we are married. Being engaged is no exception. She literally used theĀ āwhy buy the cow when you can get the milk for freeā argument.Ā
Not allowed to have children until Iām well into my 30s (and already married, but thatās a given) Ā
Not allowed to be Maid of Honor in any weddings until after I am married myself.Ā
The big problem that I have with these customs that my mother laid down for me is that it essentially speaks to their ownership of me, a concept that I really donāt like as a highly educated Vietnamese-American woman. If there is one thing I love about American culture, itās that women here are given ownership of themselves. This isnāt meant to open up a debate over the current womenās rights struggle in America; believe me, Iām well aware of the problems here as well. But many cultures, Vietnamese culture included, perpetuates the idea that we are property. We are property to our families, given a dowry to ascribe our worth in materials, and when we are married, we are property to our husband and his family. My mother always said to me that having a daughter is a burden because you spend all your years putting effort and care into her, only so that another family may take her from you someday. I never understood this. I never planned on leaving my family. I understand now what she meant; that daughters marrying off is similar to jumping from one ownership to another. I feel that by placing these restrictions down, sheās trying to prolong this inevitable business transaction; that with each childhood friend of mine that gets married or engaged, she panics even more.Ā
I understand keeping parts of culture and tradition that are dear. I keep my Vietnamese heritage close every time I cook or eat soup during 110 degree weather, every time I light incense on the death anniversaries of my relatives, or every time I pull out gió xanh when Iām sick. But as someone who was also born in America and raised in and around American culture, I am real tired of being seen as property thatās just passed from one set of owners to another.Ā
My mother has this uncanny ability to uplift me, to empower me, and then remind me of my objectivity, all in the same breath. I want to ask her why she bothered to raise her daughter to be strong and to rise if she was only going to eventually wrangle her back down into her place.Ā
Hi, I just read your last post and can completely relate to it. Two years ago I studied abroad in China and went through a very similar phase during New Year. I would stay in bed all day, sleep a lot, cry the rest of the time. I lost appetite and avoided going outside. I couldn't tell my father cause I struggled so much to convince him I could take care of myself. I couldn't tell my Chinese family either, for reasons you already mentioned. It lasted for a couple of months. I was miserable. 1/3
.
2/3 So I have no idea if/How that would help you, but here's what I did and what kinda saved my life: I looked online for something completely new and crazy that I could try. I wanted to force myself to go outside, meet cool people, and be in a new environment so I could just never go there again in case of failure. That's how I surprisingly ended up joining a roller derby league. I met awesome supportive women who helped me challenge myself.
.
3/3 It wasn't an immediate change of course. But it gave me a reason to leave bed once a week (then later three times a week...), gave me self-confidence, and kinda changed my life but that's another story. To this day it's difficult for me to explain how bad I felt during that winter. How guilty too, cause I wanted to go abroad so bad, that was my choice. So I want to tell you: it's okay for you to be like that. You're still making the right choice. You're still a wonderful human being. (Iris)
Iris, thank you for such a kind and thoughtful message. (Also, a roller derby league?! That is freakin cool.) I always appreciate when you reach out, and I'm actually just so humbled that you still even check in to begin with; you've been around for years and I still don't know who you are! I think I will eventually be okay once I've graduated from my master's program; it's such a toxic and high stress environment that prolonged breaks turn into times for me to finally unpack and process what happened during the semester. Again, thank you for your concern and for reaching out. You are so, so appreciated. Have a wonderful day and I hope to hear from you again soon!
sleep
Starting to realize that I definitely have a problem, and I wonder if it's a self accepted phase that all twenty something year olds go through. Lately, I've barely been leaving my room, much less my bed. The few times I do get up, it's to feed my cat or clean his litter box, get a cup of water, or go to the bathroom. I've barely been eating; the last thing I ate was tofu and rice yesterday at around 2 PM. I'm using sleep as an escape method-- to get away from any hunger pains and to get away from emotions of isolation and desolation. I'm not purposefully avoiding eating to lose weight or anything like that. I love good food and I love eating with my loved ones. But I've come to realize how lonely I am when I have to cook or eat by myself in a quiet and empty apartment with no one to even verbalize with but my cat. It's getting to the point where I would rather avoid meals than to confront this. Yeah, I don't get it either; mental illness makes no damn sense and has no reason or logic. Last week, when I tried to speak to my mother about this, she went on a tirade about how when she was 23, she was raising a child and isolated from her family. She didn't use this opportunity to talk about how at 23, the both of us seemed to struggle with mental illness nor how to work through it. Instead, she used it as an opportunity to tell me what every Asian culture preaches about mental illness: bottle it up, keep it inside, do not burden others with it because you always get what you ask for. Apparently, by moving 6 hours away from my family and childhood friends, I was asking for this. I was heartbroken, to say the least. She was really the only person I opened up to about it, and she effectively told me to never speak to her about it again. What do I even do at this point? Seeking professional, medical help isn't an option. And I don't want to solely rely on my partner; he has enough to deal with and putting my mental illness on his shoulders would be unfair. If any of you have experienced the same thing, what are some coping methods or strategies you have used? Or if none of you read this blog anymore and it's now just a void, hello void, at least something out there is receptive to my thoughts and feelings. I'm forcing myself to leave the apartment for the first time in a few days to get groceries and maybe a nice sandwich to eat. Hopefully going outside will make me feel a little better.

Plastic Love (Night Tempo 100% Pure Remastered) - 竹å ć¾ćć
hey fellow asians, letās stop using cultural relativism and post colonial theory to justify antiblackness.
what youāre basically doing is using identity politics to weasel your way out of accountability.
our countries participated in the slave trade. that cannot be justified by cultural relativism.Ā
white supremacy/colonialism spread its ideology to asian countries. that cannot be justified by post-colonialism. antiblackness exists in our countries, ourselves, our histories. own up to it.Ā
whether itās thinking that we can use the n word or other antiblack slurs because some of us have been targeted by misdirected antiblackness, or thinking that we have a claim to black culture because of racialization, or thinking racial relativism theory is an excuse for antiblackness (modern slavery, police brutality, etc)ā¦ā¦. we need to stop. lmao. like. we blame black people for their hypervisibility without realizing that itās white people who made us invisible. we blame affirmative action for the reason we get rejected by employers and universities when in fact weāre rejected because of racism and AA largely benefits white women. we think itās okay to use the n word or that itās fine for our people to profit from modern slavery becauseĀ āuwu slavery is a western phenomenonā orĀ āuwu we donāt have american racial dynamicsā. thatās fucking bullshit and you know itās fucking bullshit. slavery is not exclusive to the west. antiblackness is the foundation of white supremacy; thus itās no wonder that all asians are antiblack. you canāt fucking simultaneously use post-colonialism/cultural relativism to excuse antiblackness and then at the same time use american racial politics to blame black people for hypervisibility. youāre being a disingenuous asshole when you do that.Ā
we alienate black asians when we do these things too.Ā
excusing police brutality just because the cop is asian is disgusting. justifying slavery just because the slaveowners are asian is disgusting. defending assault just because the assaulter is an asian immigrant is disgusting. ignorning the use of slurs and the theft of black culture just because the thief is asian is disgusting.Ā
donāt ask for support, solidarity, or respect from black people if you donāt want to put in the work or eradicate antiblackness. frankly all of us need to work on this. we are all socialized to be antiblack. you are. i am. our parents are. our friends our. our communities within asia and across the diaspora are. we ALL need to work on it.Ā
(donāt touch this post if you arenāt black and/or asian).Ā
