sj/m’s writing has put so much of characters’ worth onto their sexuality and sexual practices that of course stans would be confounded when n/esta having sex with people doesn’t equate to character development and becoming a palatable person (ie groveling at failsand’s feet). sj/m often makes a wreck of her character development, and n/esta’s arc has been incredibly wonky, but she has certainly developed. this is more than i can say for most of the other characters, which is why we (and a lot of other antis and some stans too) like her the most. n/esta’s arc is very internal and we don’t get her pov throughout the trilogy, so we have to observe n/esta’s changes through faerug’s biased eyes, and it doesn’t help that faerug is far away from n/esta for most of the series. rice and e/lain have both been forgiven for acting in the same or worse fashion as n/esta did during the arch sisters’ childhood and through the war against prythian. the difference between them? faerug forgives rice because he’s a man and forgives e/lain because she falls in with the inner circle. the ic have all done horrible things, and continue to act horrible, and yet are forgiven. the only difference between them and n/esta, l/ucien, and t/arquin (and even tom lane because he’s the blond version of rice) is that faerug rejects the latter from her friend group. similarly, e/lain had to reject l/ucien as her love interest and start something with assriel. l/ucien can never be part of the ic, seeing as his only in would be through faerug, who holds him accountable for the abuse she suffered at tom’s hand. being in the ic and/or being a white man are the only criteria for redemption in this series.

oh god i somehow keep on forgetting that the next book is going to be n/essian in i/llyrian camps. i’ll still never get over the way sj/m had cass victim blame and make fun of nes for being afraid of him/the fae, nor will i get over him invading her space in w&e, nor him sexualizing her when she is clearly unwell in fas. it’s so absurd how twisted the narrative is in the ic’s favor. the dynamic between the two active sisters has clearly switched and probably even more in faerug’s favor than it ever was when nes was in power–though nes was the more active agent in the arch family dynamic, the most social power she had came from being in a relationship with a dude who tried to rape her (tomas). i really really hope mess discusses this trauma further in the n/essian book. faerug has a whole group of immortal warrior friends and the most powerful hl as a husband at her back, plus unique powers and over a year of fae world experience over nes and elain. faerug is the one controlling nes’s life and holding her acceptance and her standards over her sisters’ heads like a carrot. it’s incredibly toxic. we were in the mind of faerug as she navigated spring and night and fell in love with both the abusers, but nes never gets the benefit of the doubt that stans are so willing to give faerug even though she went through a similarly traumatic ordeal and came out as a better person.

I mean, where is the lie? Unfortunately it is just a school, but it’s something still, maybe more and more schools will take notice. Better later than never.
