I think the problem with Beyonce's costume was not that she's a different race but that she skipped the unibrow and moustache which were really important and relevant parts of Frida's feminism. When someone does blackface/brownface/yellowface/redface, that's disrespecting their race. Dressing up as them at all is not disrespecting their race. The problem with the Frida costume was disrespecting something about her personally. It was not racist.

the thing is though, with frida all of those features are CONNECTED to her brownness. her eyebrows and mustache are not extricable from her Mexican identity, emphasizing them was a defiance of (white/western) beauty standards.

so yes, that is an anti-latin@ act, to sanitize that part of her
