Now that I think about it, yeah, like he learned to sense ki shortly after knowing it was possible. I bet that's why he wanted to wait 3 hours for Goku to show up during the Saiyan saga, so he could try and see if he could sense Gohan, Piccolo and Krillin. Either that, or he was just chilling, lol

He’s confirmed to be a quick learned several times, ye. The ki sensing on Earth, Trunks tells us he surpassed SSJ in a couple (few?) months (and realized later that Vegeta had also discovered the bulkier form Trunks thought he was keeping secret, he just realized wasn’t useful and just chose not to share that information). He also achieves SSJ Blue in a few months despite lacking the multi-Saiyan assist to get to SSJ God, and then his whole bit about being a prodigy born of hard work in the Moro arc with his spirit fission and instant transmission speedrun. And now thanks to Daima we know he also cracked SSJ 3 in less than 6 months!
