I wanna elaborate because I know ALL of this is a sensitive subject for tumblr.
First: I don’t have a clear solution, and that is why I stand by no action until there is one.
But, what I saw working and not working was that any sort of blanket solution isn’t going to work because this isn’t a blanket problem. The kids I most worry about would also be the ones quickest to get around something like being currently purposed. I’m not gonna belabor why because I think other people have covered it, and to a large extent it is exactly what is self evident: Censorship bad.
But what did work was treating your child like a human and explaining what limits there were and why, and having an INDIVIDUAL AND OPEN DIALOG WITH SAID CHILD.
Most kids who REALLY get in trouble online aren’t looking for it, at least not to begin with. They wanted to male friends, they wanted to post to Facebook, they wanted to watch something fun.
And a lot of the times the real trouble happens in the mundane “safe” places. While I won’t say predators aren’t on this or that site, because they can be anywhere, someone actively looking to groom a kid is going to go where ever kids are. If you ban them from certain spaces, predators will just follow them to the “child safe” areas.
So not only can you not just ban porn, or whatever, you need to know what YOUR kid’s issue is and work with that. Because predators aren’t always the biggest danger they’ll face. Are they too trusting and share info they shouldn’t? Are they not discerning enough about content yet and get led down things like thr nazi pipeline on youtube? Are they finding things in safe space that, due to who they are as individuals, is unsafe but would appear normal from the outside?
You may notice with all of those that really…there’s only one solution. Involved parents.
And so far we have not figure out any remotely ethical way to enforce good parenthood.
But if you wanna be a good parent, be VERY aware of what your child is doing, but listen carefully to my last piece of advice from watching tense relationships where this monitoring was necessarily heavily enforced:
If you have to read their messages, tell them. They have the right to not share that info through messages. If you have to monitor their website, tell them. They have the right to reserve certain subject to look up elsewhere.
And you might be saying “then what’s the point?”
The point is you can’t control them, you can just guide them, and that’s an active duty, not a passive one.
It’a a lot easier to track who is talking to your kid irl and make sure they are staying safe. A kid is going to have a lot harder time becoming a secret nazi if they have to go to the library every day to be brain washed, rather than scrolling on their phone till 2 am.
You will never be able to fully block them from all harm, but you can actively help guide them into habits to protect themselves while they learn how to do it on their ownz
